COVID-19 Exposure Response Protocols

CWC’s intent is to provide a safe environment for our athletes, coaches, and families. That is our number one priority and the guidelines set forth below are in place to ensure that happens. While there is no definitive road map for success to follow, we are committed to providing our athletes an opportunity to safely practice and compete this season.

Athletes/coaches and their families need to decide for themselves if they are comfortable returning to athletic training or competition. Athletes/coaches who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 (or were presumed to be positive) must obtain medical clearance from their primary care provider prior to return to sports participation.

Everyone should be aware that COVID-19 is still an emerging disease, and information and guidelines related to this disease are subject to change. In addition, as there is not currently a cure or vaccine for COVID-19, there is no way to completely avoid the risk of exposure, disease transmission, or serious illness, including death.

As a rule, if you are not feeling well – stay at home! If someone in your immediate family or that resides in your home is not feeling well – stay home!

Missing a practice or two because you wanted to err on the side of caution is the right thing to do to ensure you do not unnecessarily infect someone else. This applies anytime you are not feeling well, not just for COVID-19.

Below are the scenarios that we can reasonably foresee occurring and how we currently plan to handle each, should they occur.

The Athlete/Coach is Experiencing Symptoms of COVID-19

Athletes/coaches who have symptoms when they arrive at practice or competition or become sick during the practice or competition will immediately be separated from others and sent home.

Anyone who has symptoms should immediately contact their healthcare provider and arrange for testing as soon as possible. Sick athletes/coaches should remain in constant contact with Coach Becker regarding their symptoms and results of any COVID-19 test so that CWC can take the appropriate action should an athlete/coach test positive for COVID-19.

Anyone feeling ill should follow CDC-recommended steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Athletes/coaches should not return to practice or competition until they have met the criteria to discontinue home isolation and consult with a healthcare provider.

Athletes/coaches with COVID-19 symptoms may not return to practice or competition until:

1)      At least ten days have passed since symptom onset, and

2)      At least 24 hours have passed since the resolution of fever without the use of fever-reducing medications, and

3)      Other symptoms have improved.

The Athlete/Coach is Suspected to Have or Confirmed to Have COVID-19

In addition to cleaning and disinfecting, CWC will work with the athlete and their parents to determine if any other athletes or CWC coaches may have been exposed to the virus and need to take additional precautions:

1)      If an athlete/coach is confirmed to have COVID-19 and they have been in the room within 48 hours of developing systems or within 3 days of the date of the positive test, CWC will inform all club families of their possible exposure to COVID-19 and maintain confidentiality as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

a)      Any potentially exposed athletes/coaches will be advised to refrain from attending practice or competition for 14 days and self-monitor for symptoms.

2)      Athletes/coaches who test positive for COVID-19 (using a viral test, not an antibody test) will be prohibited from coming to any practice or competition until their quarantine order has been lifted by a medical professional or their local health department.

Sick athletes/coaches should follow CDC-recommended steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Athletes/coaches should not return to practice or competition until they have met the criteria to discontinue home isolation and consult with a healthcare provider.

Direct Exposure with No Symptoms

Athletes/Coaches may have been exposed if they have been in “close contact” of someone infected, which is defined as being within about 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for a prolonged period of time:

1)      Directly exposed athletes/coaches who have symptoms of COVID-19 should self-isolate and follow the CDC recommended steps.

2)      Directly exposed athletes/coaches who do not have symptoms should remain at home or in a comparable setting and practice social distancing for 14 days.

3)      Athletes/coaches under a quarantine order from their school due to a direct exposure would also fall under this category and should remain at home or in a comparable setting and practice social distancing for 14 days from the date of last exposure.

All other athletes/coaches should self-monitor for symptoms and wear cloth face coverings when in public. If an athlete/coach develops symptoms, they should immediately notify their coach and stay home.
