The RVBSA offers both a recreational and travel softball program for children of the Township of River Vale.  Below is information on our programs:

RECREATIONAL PROGRAM

Our recreational softball program is offered to River Vale girls Grades K-8.  Practices typically begin in mid-March (weather permitting) and games begin in April.  The season concludes in mid-June. The girls play at their current grade level regardless of age. 

K-2 Clinic

Introduction to softball for current Kindergarten,1st and 2^nd graders. Professional trainers (former college softball players) from Challenge U Softball (www.challengeusoftball.com) will run 60 minute sessions for the girls on Saturday mornings consisting of drills and stations.  Additional parent-coach practices will take place during the week on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.  T-ball/coach pitch scrimmages may be introduced after the first few sessions with the focus on development and fun -- we do not keep score and everyone gets a turn to bat each inning.   The goal of the clinic is to expose our youngest players to the fundamentals of softball in a fun and age appropriate way.

3rd/4th Grade Minors Softball

Kid pitch format, with coach pitch after a pre-determined number of walks per inning.  Innings are subject to run caps or one time through the batting order, whichever comes first.  No stealing is allowed.  An umpire is provided. Games are played against other RV teams as well as rec teams from surrounding towns (Hillsdale, Westwood, Park Ridge, Montvale, Woodcliff Lake, Emerson).  There are typically 2 games per week, with 1 game during the week and 1 game on Saturday.  Practices are mixed in throughout the season.

5th/6th Grade Majors Softball

Full kid pitch format.  Innings are subject to run caps or one time through the batting order, whichever comes first.  Stealing of 3^rd base is allowed, but only 2 times per inning.  An umpire is provided. Games are played against other RV teams as well as rec teams from surrounding towns (Hillsdale, Westwood, Park Ridge, Montvale, Woodcliff Lake, Emerson).  There typically 2-3 games per week, with 1-2 games during the week and 1 game on Saturday.  Practices are mixed in throughout the season.

7th/8th Grade Seniors Softball

Full kid pitch format.  Innings are subject to run caps or one time through the batting order, whichever comes first.  Stealing is allowed, but stealing of home plate is usually not permitted.  An umpire is provided. Games are played against other RV teams as well as rec teams from surrounding towns (Hillsdale, Westwood, Park Ridge, Montvale, Woodcliff Lake, Emerson).  There typically 2-3 games per week, with 1-2 games during the week and 1 game on Saturday.  Practices are mixed in throughout the season.   

TRAVEL SOFTBALL

The RVBSA offers a travel softball program for girls in grades 3-8.  The Travel Program is an additional opportunity for players who have demonstrated the interest, enthusiasm, sportsmanship and ability to play in a more competitive environment.  

The spring and fall travel program consists of scrimmage games against other town’s travel softball teams, together with higher level practices and instruction.  Spring and Fall games normally take place on Friday nights and Sunday (late afternoon).  Additionally, River Vale has historically participated in the Bergen County Summer Softball Travel League, which runs from mid-June through the end of July.  2-3 games/week are scheduled for the Summer Travel League, but no games take place on the weekend.

Age brackets for the travel program consist of the following: 3^rd/4^th grade, U10, U12 and U14.  Teams will be formed to the extent there is enough interest.  River Vale has also combined with other neighboring towns if a particular age bracket is short on players.
