About Us
Established in April 2004 and based in Union, NJ, the Storm was originally formed as a U10 girls travel team playing for Union Soccer and began by participating in the Mid-NJ Youth Soccer Association league and later moved on to higher competition. At an early age, lead by Coach Rich Vera, who played soccer overseas at a semi-professional and collegiate level has 20+ years coaching youth sports, including baseball, softball and soccer. He has been at the forefront of the team for almost a decade now, he has fostered a healthy learning environment for the team, focused on discipline, good character and soccer development. The program includes technical, tactical and individual development for both players and the team. Coach Vera is a Rutgers Safety Certified Coach, USSF E Licenced and a USSF Certified Referee. When he is not on the soccer field, he serves as a Senior Vice President at an international financial institution in NYC.
In 2010, Coach Steve Caggiano, who holds a USSF F Coaching License, and is First Aid and CPR certified, joined the coaching staff. Leveraging off of his ODP knowledge, he immediately focused on developing the team's mental maturity by focusing on proper visualization and game day preparation of the program. His mentoring and positive reinforcement, took the young ladies to a higher level of play mentally. Coach Caggiano spends many hours researching and reading the physocological aspect of the game and has consistently lectured the team. When Steve is not on the pitch coaching, he works at one of the major US technology and data services firms.
Througout the years, the Storm has progressed positively by continuously participating in competitive soccer events. The Storm has continously advanced through flighting, tournaments and league participation. The team focuses on achieving realistic and measurable goals without sacrificing the fun aspect, however many of our players aspire to play at a collegiate level. The team focus, at this stage, is to compete in high level tournaments/cups in order to create an opportunity to showcase the players and expose them to college recruiters from Division I, II or III schools.
