2009 Girls Basketball All-Star Team

Three Eagles Earn Spots

Friday, April 03, 2009
By Andy Boogaard / The Fresno Bee
SENIOR - Morgan Hatten
Tri-River Athletic Conference co-Player of the Year and near-miss for The Bee’s top honor averaged 14.4 points, led the team in assists (5.2) and steals (3.1), and equaled teammate Janae Coffee’s average in rebounding (10.6).

Headed to Saint Mary’s, she had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the Central Section Division-I title loss to Stockdale, and who knows what might have happened had she not sprained a knee with 3 minutes remaining.

“A clutch, smooth player with tremendous court savvy and a high basketball IQ,” Eagles coach Craig Campbell said. “She also displayed tremendous toughness, getting 16 stitches in her head and, 3 hours later, helping lead us to a victory over Saint Mary’s, then No. 1 in the country.”

JUNIOR - Brianna Orlich
Co-Tri-River Athletic Conference Player of the Year and, like teammate Morgan Hatten, was a strong candidate for The Bee’s POY award.

Her all-around play had few rivals in the Central Section. She averaged 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals. She had 21 points, six rebounds and five assists in the Division I title game.

“She has a phenomenal competitive drive,” Eagles coach Craig Campbell said. “She is one of the most fearless and hardest workers I have coached in 15 years. She is the best on-the-ball defender in the Valley and one of the top in the state. She has the toughness to guard an All-State post in one game and the athleticism to defend an elite point guard the next.”

JUNIOR - Janae Coffee
Central Section’s most powerful inside force led the 23-7 Tri-River Athletic Conference champion and section Division I runner-up in scoring (17.9) and blocks (2.9), and was tied for the team lead in rebounds (10.6).

A repeat Bee All-Star, she played big in the Golden Eagles’ biggest games, evident in a 26-point performance in a 57-50 conquest of St. Mary’s-Stockton, when the Rams were top-ranked nationally, and a 15-point, 15-rebound, five-block effort in a 70-60 loss to Stockdale for the section D-I title.

“Hands down the top post player in the Valley and is also considered one of the tops in the state and country,” Eagles coach Craig Campbell said. “She has gotten dramatically better each year. Her potential is limitless.”

Fantastic Finish To Season!

The Golden Eagles played their most competitive game during the playoffs, as they had to go on the road to play against the Chatsworth Chancellors.  A close game throughout, Clovis West just ran out of time as the final buzzer sounded, ending their season 66-62.

Our Clovis West coaching staff would like to thank everyone who joined us last Friday night at our “Barefoot Coaches” game against Madera.
Your generosity raised a huge number of shoes for those less fortunate.

Coach Hunter states, “If a five- or six-year-old kid can walk around their entire life with no shoes on,
then surely, in a warm climate, in a basketball environment, I can do it.  When I go to bed tonight,
I know a million children in this world will be getting their first pair of shoes,
and I know the hope that's going to give them.”

Here is an excerpt from the Samaritan Feet website:

“Samaritan’s Feet is a non-profit organization dedicated to changing lives through Shoes of Hope distributions around the world.  300 million people wake up each morning without a pair of shoes to protect their feet from injury and disease.  The goal of Samaritan’s Feet is to provide shoes to 10 million of these individuals in the next 10 years by teaching them a biblical story of faith, hope and love, demonstrating those truths in touching them by washing their feet, and treating them to a new pair of shoes and socks.”

Clovis West Captures SHOWDOWN!

Saturday evening's final saw a hard fought battle between two of California’s best girls basketball programs!  Our Clovis West Golden Eagles went into the championship as heavy underdogs against the St. Mary’s Rams.  St. Mary's boasts two All-Americans and was preseason #1 in the nation!  Despite missing 2 starters who are out for the season with torn ACL's,  our own Golden Eagles rallied together and played tremendous defense to earn a 57-50 over the Lady Rams, and win this year’s 2008 Adidas Central Valley Showdown.  Awesome job girls!

CLOVIS WEST FINISHES 4TH IN SAN DIEGO CLASSIC!

Minus 3 varsity players, the Clovis West Varsity girls have earned their way into the Final Four of the country's largest high school team tournament.  With 336 teams in 5 divisions, C-Dub returned to the semi-finals where they established themselves as one of the elite teams in all of California one year ago.
The San Diego Classic is a "Who's Who" of west coast basketball.  Many of the top teams in the state and western region are competing and have lost a game somewhere during this incredible array of talent.  Yet, our Golden Eagles continued to soar and although battered and bruised, they were on the state's largest summer stage and placed 4th after two close losses to Cajon and Mater Dei in the Final Four.
Two final impressive stats, the CW varsity is the only team to return to the Final Four two years in a row, and the CW program is the only one to have both their varsity and JV (see below) in the Final Four of their respective divisions.

CW JUNIOR VARSITY WINS IT ALL ! ! !
