Goldberg Signs with Bulldogs

April 18, 2010

FRESNO
, Calif. -
Fresno State coach Adrian Wiggins has announced the signing of Blakely Goldberg to a National Letter of Intent.  Goldberg is a Clovis West graduate who has played the last two years at Fresno City College under Coach Brian Tessler.

“She has an extremely competitive spirit,” Wiggins said.  “She has been running the same offense that we run for the last six years.  That familiarity is really going to give her an edge at the Division I level.  We are excited to have another Valley player join our program.”

Over the past two years Fresno City went undefeated in conference and FCC participated in the state tournament her freshman year.  She is a two-time all-conference player and was selected third-team all-state this past season.

She averaged 16.8 points, 6.8 assists, four rebounds and shot 40.8 percent from the field at Fresno City.  She was also a 74.6 percent free throw shooter and a 32.5 3-point shooter.

THE MASTER’S COLLEGE

2009-10: One of the finest in program history prepares for what must and should be her best season yet…armed with a renewed passion for the game, she has the complete skill set that fits an All-GSAC and All-American candidate…her leadership will be the key to team chemistry…finds multiple ways to score, going inside with exquisite post moves, stepping out to nail the three-ball, and everything in between…understands when and where to get shots…unselfish by nature, she will be encouraged to be more demanding of the ball this year...with another superb season, she will solidify her position as the program’s all-time leader in free throw percentage and three-point field goal percentage…should crack the top five in numerous other career categories.

2008-09: Playing consistent, if not, spectacular ball at times, the junior continued to carve her niche as one of the program’s best-ever…started every game for the second year in a row…averaged in double figures for the third time in as many seasons and equaled career-highs with 34 three-pointers and a team-best 103 free throws made…led the team in three-point percentage(41%)…tallied in double figures 22 times and scored 20 or more points on six occasions…scored a season-best 23 points in wins over Dominican, Concordia, and Fresno Pacific…notched a pair of double-doubles, including a 23-point, 11-rebound outing vs. Fresno Pacific on 3/2/09…sank 10 free throws, grabbed 10 rebounds, and scored 19 points vs. Academy of Art on 11/21/08…handed out a season-high six assists vs. Dominican on 11/15/08…had a season-high four steals vs. Biola on 2/24/09…named a first-team NCCAA All-American for the third consecutive season…finished her junior year at the top of the program’s career free throw percentage (81.2%) and three-point field goal percentage (39.7%) lists.

2007-08: The squad’s go-to player thrived in a sophomore season that is notoriously known for letdowns and earned multiple postseason honors for the second straight season…although her team-leading scoring average dropped, reflecting on her unselfish play, virtually every other offensive category was up…started all 33 games and tallied in double figures 25 times…paced the squad in minutes played (933), field goals, and points…was second in field goal percentage (sixth in the GSAC), free throws, free throw percentage (third in the GSAC), rebounds and steals…scored 20 or more points six times and tallied a career-high 29 vs. top-ranked Union (TN) on 11/16/07…grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds and notched the first of two double-doubles with 16 points against Hope International on 1/19/08…went 8-8 from the line vs. Biola on 1/8/08…dished out a career-high 10 assists vs. William Jessup on 11/9/07…had a season-best six steals vs. Fresno Pacific on 2/5/08…named All-GSAC, NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, and first-team NCCAA All-American for the second year in a row.

2006-07: Satisfied to play a secondary role to her veteran teammates early on, the freshman phenom turned up her game over the final half of the season en route to all-conference and All-American honors…started 25 of the club’s 28 games, scoring in double figures 23 times…paced the squad in field goal percentage (48.4%), free throws made (103), free throw percentage (81.7%), and offensive rebounds (60)…averaged 18.1ppg over the final nine games of the campaign and scored a season-high 26 points vs. Westmont on 2/26/07…recorded four double-doubles including a collegiate debut of 15 points and 10 rebounds against Dominican on 11/11/06…grabbed a season-high 12 boards to go along with 19 points vs. California Baptist on 2/15/07…converted 49 of her final 52 free throw attempts, hightlighted by 10-10 and 11-11 performances vs. Hope International on 2/17/07 and Westmont on 2/26/07, respectively…one of only two freshmen named All-GSAC and was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American.

Clovis West HS: Playing for three varsity coaches in as many years didn’t seem to faze one of the top performers on one of the state’s premier hoops teams…part of two Tri-Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) championship clubs, including the 2003-04 squad that won a CIF Central Section title…a three-time, All-TRAC selection, she was All-Central Section her final two years…led the Golden Eagles in nearly every statistical category as a senior, averaging 18.7ppg, shooting 54% from the field, scoring 506 points, and grabbing 241 rebounds (8.9rpg)…named conference MVP.

Annie Is Perfect In Regular-Season Finale

There couldn’t have been a better way for Annie Gillespie to end the regular season. Playing in front of her hometown fans, the senior forward poured in a team-high 20 points Tuesday evening to lead The Master’s College to an 81-69 win over Fresno Pacific in the Central Valley.

Gillespie went 7-7 from the field, including 2-2 from behind the arc, and 4-4 from the line as the Mustangs (16-12, 11-9) snapped a three-game losing skid. The victory was a timely tune-up for the Mustangs who play at Biola Wednesday evening in a first-round, GSAC Tournament tilt.

The Mustangs fell behind early and had to play catch-up. But, when Gillespie drilled a three-pointer and scored on a layup in a 37-second span, the Mustangs went ahead to stay 25-23. It was part of a game-changing 17-2 run that eventually led to a 32-23 advantage with 7:07 left in the first half. Fittingly, Gillespie finished off the decisive burst with a layup.

The Sunbirds did respond, closing to 36-31 but Jenna Reed capped a solid first half, draining a three-pointer with 36 seconds left to send the Mustangs to the break up by eight points.

Gillespie continued her hot hand in the opening minutes of the second half, tossing in a pair of buckets as the Mustangs took a 43-34 lead at the 17:43 mark. The margin reached double figures 34 seconds later when Lena Rivera converted a layup.
But, the game was far from over as the Sunbirds flew back into contention, using a 14-4 spurt over a five-minute span to close to 55-52. The Mustangs were only up by three points (57-54) when the game changed dramatically.

Freshman Kimmy Iverson’s trifecta with 8:16 left to play gave the Mustangs a six-point edge and was the catalyst for an 11-2 burst that created breathing room and a 68-56 lead at the 6:36 mark. Again, Gillespie bucket finished off the run, burying another three-ball.

The Sunbirds refused to go quietly, however, slicing the deficit to 72-65 with 1:46 remaining but that was their last hurrah as the Mustangs sealed the decision from the free-throw line. Over the final 1:36, the Mustangs converted 9-10 from the line, highlighted by Erica Inge’s 7-8 performance.

Inge complemented Gillespie well, tossing in 16 points and handing out a game-high six assists. Joining those two in double figures were Reed (13) and Rivera (10).

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s tournament opener at Biola, the Mustangs face a tall task. Having lost twice to the 21st-ranked Eagles during the regular season, the Mustangs will have to pull off an upset to keep their national tournament hopes alive.
