After 3rd Straight trip the Iowa Legion State Tournament the Bancrofts program sends 20 off to College
(Sioux City, Iowa U.S.A. - May 24, 2012) The 2012 spring season is complete for the Sioux City Bancrofts American Legion Baseball Team from Monahan Post 64 ~ Morningside Post 697 ~ Nelson Post 1981, following their third consecutive trip to the Iowa American Legion State Tournament. West Des Moines (Dowling) from Post 620 won the 2012 American Legion State Championship, and after a 2nd place Legion finish in 2011 this is their second American Legion title since 2009. Post 620 will next play August 9 to 13 in the Central Plains Regional in Dickinson, North Dakota. The respective winners of the 8 regional nation-wide tournaments will square off in the American Legion World Series at the new permanent home of the tournament at Keeter Stadium ~ Veteran's Field in Shelby, North Carolina from August 17 to August 21. For complete information see: www.legion.org/baseball
The Bancrofts players, eighteen in total from fourteen different high schools, are now back with their respective high school teams for the summer. Jonathon Van Beek, a junior from West Lyon High School, led the Bancrofts this spring with a .360 batting average, while Ryan Flynn, a sophomore from Hartley-Melvin-Sandborn High School, led the B's with 23 1/3 innings pitched and a solid 2.70 ERA. Danny Smith, a junior from Remsen-Union, had the lowest ERA with a 2.40.
The Bancrofts hope the Championship experience gained this spring in Legion baseball will help these young players at Principal Park in Des Moines this July as the respective Bancrofts players work to take their own high school teams to the Iowa High School State Championships to the Cubs AAA park. Looking ahead then already to the 2012-2013 school year; the American Legion Bancrofts from this spring will be sending eight players off to college to play baseball; while the total Bancrofts players from the Class of 2012 that will be off to play college baseball is right at twenty total players.
Overall from the five years of existence of the Bancrofts baseball program, this will bring the total of former players playing baseball in college in the 2012-2013 collegiate school year to more than fifty players. The B's originated in 2008 as a Tournament Team, and 2012 was the third year in American Legion baseball. ABOUT:
The Bancrofts in 2012 enter into their 5th year of existence as a team as the B's originally started as a Tournament team in 2008 entering into their first ever competition in Premier Baseball's Junior Championship in Joplin, Missouri. The Bancrofts are now in their 3rd spring as an American Legion baseball team after a 25 year hiatus for Legion baseball in Sioux City. The Bancrofts operate a College Prospects team in the fall that is generally geared towards the college recruiting process; and as well play periodically as the Tournament Team that they started as, entering into select nationally recognized tournaments that occur outside of the Iowa high school summer baseball season. In this short time span since 2008 the Bancrofts have two Iowa American Legion Players of the Year recipients in Ryan Brasser from South O'Brien High School in 2010 and Taylor Klingenberg from George-Little Rock High School in 2011, and over thirty former players playing baseball in college.
The Bancrofts American Legion team this spring was comprised of 18 players from 14 different high schools in northwest Iowa. The spring Legion season in Iowa is constructed not to conflict with the Iowa high school summer baseball season. The spring Legion season consists of a 24 game regular season weekend schedule that begins in March. Iowa Legion playoffs and State Championships take place in late April and early May. The B's are selected from traditional open and free-of-charge tryouts that are conducted in late February and early March. In addition to practices and games the Bancrofts partake in various civic activities. The B's call the Sioux City West High School baseball field their home.
The Bancrofts are named in memory of Sioux City's native son and lone National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Dave Bancroft. Bancroft was born in Sioux City, Iowa on April 20, 1891 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York by the Veterans Committee in 1971. The Bancrofts wear 1915 Boston Braves caps in honor of Dave Bancroft.

Players making the Sioux City Bancrofts American Legion spring roster, not to exceed 18 players, will compete in a 24 game regular spring season schedule that begins this year on Saturday, March 17. The Bancrofts will play at Sioux City West High for home games with Sioux City East High being the Bancroft’s base school. This regular season will consist of weekend games scheduled in March and April, and is set to go through Sunday, April 22. The Iowa American Legion Area Tournaments are then to be held on April 28 and 29. The Bancrofts are scheduled to play in the Area IV Tournament in Fort Dodge versus Fort Dodge and Mason City, both state qualifying teams in the High School summer season last year. Teams advancing from the Area Legion Tournament as State qualifiers will play in the Iowa American Legion Department (State) Tournament that is scheduled to be held in Des Moines, Iowa on May 12 and 13; hosted by Dowling Catholic High School. The state champion of Iowa will then advance in August to the Central Plains Division Regional Tournament at Southside Ballpark in Dickinson, North Dakota on August 9 to August 13, and will compete against teams from Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The Central Plains Division winner will then play against the other seven Regional Champions from around the country at the American Legion World Series from August 17 to August 21 at the new permanent site of the World Series of Keeter Stadium - Veteran's Field in Shelby, North Carolina. For more information on the American Legion World Series please visit: www.americanlegionworldseries.com The American Legion baseball program currently registers more than 5,400 teams from all 50 states, and Canada and Puerto Rico.
The American Legion baseball schedules and season in Iowa are set in the spring as to not conflict with the summer Iowa high school baseball schedules and season. The Iowa High School Athletic Association sets the first allowable full team practice date as the first Monday of the first week of May, which this year is April 30. The first legal playing date for high school games in Iowa this year is May 21. The Iowa High School Baseball State Championship games then are to be held on July 28 this year. The American Legion and Iowa High School baseball schedules are compatible so that high school athletes in Iowa can play in both seasons without conflicts.
Players are to be academically and athletically eligible at their individual high schools, and are to be 2012 Iowa high school baseball eligible to play for the Bancrofts. Iowa operates under Player Recruiting Plan “B” under the national guidelines for American Legion baseball rules. This states: ‘Plan “B” base school recruiting allows both senior and junior Legion Baseball teams to select players who attend nearby high schools.’ For complete rules see www.legion.org
This is the third year of operation for the Bancrofts as an American Legion team after a 25 year hiatus for American Legion baseball in Sioux City. Edward H. Monahan Post 64 is the primary sponsoring Post of the Sioux City Bancrofts with additional supporting American Legion Posts in Sioux City’s Morningside Post 697 and also Duane M. Nelson Post 1981.
The Bancrofts are coached and managed by Bob Protexter; owner and operator of Total Baseball Development, a baseball school originating in 2004 that is located in Sioux City. Protexter is a 1985 graduate of Sioux City East High and played collegiately at the University of Texas - Pan American and at Morningside College (1991). Protetxter is a veteran of international coaching with two years and countless summers coaching Russian teams overseas dating back to 1990; has worked in professional baseball for six years, five with the Los Angeles Angels and one with the Seattle Mariners; and coached as an assistant at Morningside College in Sioux City for eight years total through 2005. Colby Lessmann is the Bancrofts head assistant coach. Lessmann is a 1992 graduate of Sioux City North and played college baseball at Briar Cliff University and at the University of South Dakota (1996). Lessmann's amateur career as a catcher began in 1992 with the Sioux City Saints and continued there until 1999 when he joined the Vermillion Red Sox. Lessmann was a member of the Red Sox 2003 and 2004 South Dakota Class "B" State Championship teams, and also of the Red Sox 2006 Class “A” State Championship team. 2012 will mark Lessman’s 21st year of playing amateur baseball. Leo Patino, a native of Columbia, is the Bancrofts pitching coach and brings a wealth of experience to the team after being a left-handed pitcher in the Minor Leagues for the Los Angeles Angels and the Detroit Tigers.
In 2012 the Bancrofts enter into their fifth year of existence as the team originally started as a Tournament team in 2008 entering into their first ever tournament in Premier Baseball’s Junior Championship in Joplin, Missouri. The Bancrofts currently operate an American Legion team in the spring season as Iowa high school baseball is played during the summer; a College Prospects team in the fall that is generated towards the college recruiting process; and play periodically as a Tournament team in select nationally recognized tournaments that generally occur in the summer after the Iowa high school season is completed. After only four years of on-the-field play the Bancrofts have over 30 players in college.
The 2011 Sioux City Bancrofts American Legion baseball team has four projected returners for the 2012 season in Nolan Field of Hinton; 2012, Kale Provost of Bishop Heelan Catholic; 2012, Danny Smith of Remsen-Union; 2013; and starting at Batboy will be a 2021 graduate out of Woodbury Central High School in Moville, Iowa……..Jase Manker!!!
The 2011 Class of the Sioux City Bancrofts American Legion team that has headed off to college to study and play baseball include: Austin Bales of West Monona (Buena Vista University), Jimmy Callahan of South O'Brien (Quincy University), Jayson Hinrichsen of Sioux City East (St. Cloud Technical & Community College), Taylor Klingenberg of George-Little Rock (Southwest Minnesota State University), Tanner McWilliams of Sioux City East (Morningside College), Josh Peterson of Sergent Bluff-Luton (Dordt College), and Austin Stubbs of Sioux City East (St. Cloud Technical & Community College). Austin Cleveringa of Sioux City East is studying Engineering at Iowa State University and will play on the Cyclones club baseball team, while Eric Peters of Sioux City East is a track and field athlete at North Iowa Area Community College.
In addition 2011 was a banner year for Bancrofts players taking off for college to play baseball as the group also includes the additional following players from the College Prospects and Tournament Bancrofts teams: Bryce Berg of Kuemper Catholic (Iowa Central Community College), Josh Bohnenkamp of Remsen-Union (Simpson College), Todd Daehn of Calamus-Wheatland (University of Dubuque), Taylor Kaufman of Glenwood (University of Iowa), Jake Kruger of Perry (Marshalltown Community College), Andrew Nelson of Omaha Millard West (Cuesta College-California), Taylor Ostrich of Carroll (Indian Hills Community College), Jacob Peter of Mason City (Creighton University), Brandon Platts of Mason City (University of Missouri), Ryan Voves of Mason City (North Iowa Area Community College), Jake Whaley of Marshalltown (Marshalltown Community College), Cody Williams of Kuemper Catholic (Des Moines Area Community College), and Jake Wimmer of Sgt. Bluff-Luton (Marshalltown Community College). Lucas Britton of Sioux City West High is pursuing an Engineering degree at the University of Iowa while Henry Krieger-Coble of Mount Pleasant is playing football for the Hawkeyes at the University of Iowa.
The 2011 Class of Bancrofts was a well decorated class as right-handed pitcher Taylor Klingenberg of George-Little Rock was Iowa’s nomination for the 2011 American Legion National Player of the Year Award. Klingenberg followed South O’Brien 2010 graduate in left-handed pitcher Ryan Brasser as Brasser was the 2010 Iowa American Legion Player of the Year. Shortstop Jake Peter of Mason City was named the 2011 Iowa High School Player of the Year by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA), and Peter was also joined by catcher Bryce Berg of Kuemper Catholic and left-handed pitcher/centerfielder Taylor Kaufmann of Glenwood on the 2011 IHSBCA All Class All-State Super Team. Peter’s Mason City teammate in right-handed pitcher Brandon Platts became the first ever Bancrofts player to be drafted in the 13th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Platts has opted to attend the University of Missouri. Lastly, right-handed pitcher Jeff Gacke, a 2009 graduate of Central Lyon High School and the closer for the Morningside College baseball team has been awarded the 2012 “PRO” Baseball Scholarship In Memory of Donald H. Protexter. Donald Protexter was the baseball coach at Morningside College for 28 years until his untimely death at the age of 60 in 1983. Bancrofts Head Coach Bob Protexter is the son of Donald. This “PRO” Baseball Scholarship is endowed by the late Paul Splittorff, former Morningside College baseball player from the late 1960’s, and longtime left-handed pitcher for the Kansas City Royals in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Splittorff retired in 1984 and passed away in May of 2011.
The Bancrofts Class of 2012 already has four college commitments, and impressive at that, with Evan Culver of Sioux City North attending Northwestern College next year, Austin Groth of South Sioux City, Nebraska scheduled to attend Creighton University; Bryce Hubert of Whiting committed to Marshalltown Community College; and Matt Jones of Gretna, Nebraska has been recruited to play at the University of Nebraska.

The Bancrofts are named in honor and in memory of Sioux City's native son and lone National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Dave Bancroft. Bancroft was a graceful, quick-handed shortstop for several National League squads, and developed a reputation as a solid lead-off hitter. The switch-hitting Bancroft was also known for his intelligence on the field and his fiery leadership in the dugout. Nicknamed “Beauty” for his habit of shouting the term on each good pitch to the opposition as a minor league player, Bancroft is still considered to be among the top fielders in baseball history. Bancroft was born in Sioux City on April 20, 1891 and played shortstop for the Philadelphia Philles (1915-1920), the New York Giants (1920-1923, 1930), the Boston Braves (1924-1927), and the Brooklyn Dodgers (1928-1929). Bancroft was elected to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York by the Veterans Committee in 1971.

Team 2 scored 4 times in the top of the 6th, and the Bancrofts scored 3 runs in the bottom giving Team 2 the 6-5 victory.............and then it got dark in a hurry.

SIOUX CITY BANCROFTS (TBD's high school select baseball team)
2008 BANCROFTS FALL PROGRAM (Fall roster currently open)
The Bancrofts were created on July 17, 2008 after receiving an invitation from Premier Baseball (www.premierbaseball.net) to fill a vacated spot in their Junior Championship in Joplin, Missouri from July 23 to July 27. It has long been the ambition of Total Baseball Development to operate a select high school traveling baseball team, and the invitation from Premier Baseball fulfilled this ambition. The Bancrofts competed against select teams from Tennessee, Texas, Indiana, Kansas, and Missouri. This was a 32 team tournament.
The Bancrofts Fall roster is currently open and the FALL PROGRAM is to be five weeks and is to include:
• Wednesday practices and scrimmages
• Thursday practices and scrimmages
• Individual Saturday workouts with local and area colleges and games against high school select teams
The Bancrofts schedule is currently being set and is tentatively to include individual Saturday workouts with:
• Marshalltown Community College
• Morningside College
• Iowa Central Community College
• Dana College
• Iowa Lakes Community College
The Bancrofts preference is to have all players at all practices, games, and workouts; at the same time encouraging full participation in each individual high school’s fall activities, fall sports schedules, and church obligations. With this a special ‘À la carte’ program is being created for the Bancrofts allowing players to practice and not play, play and not practice, and a mix of the both in full regards to each player's extra curricular activities. This special program will be prorated, and the full cost of the program will be set as the schedule is finalized.
For more information and to sign up for the Bancrofts Fall Program please call 712-276-2360.

Dear Players, Parents, & Coaches,
On July 16, Don Patty of Premier Baseball (www.premierbaseball.net) invited a team from Total Baseball Development to fill the final team spot, vacated by a team from Houston, for their Junior Championship next week in Joplin, Missouri. Hence the late notice, but I believe that we can take a quality team to Joplin on this short time frame. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested at 712-276-2360 or protexter.tbd@gmail.com
Here is what it is:
* Premier Baseball - www.premierbaseball.net - All ages of select travel baseball including high school age players
* Junior Championship (High School juniors and younger)
* Joplin, Missouri
* July 23 to July 27, 2008 (Wednesday to Sunday preferable to leave on Tuesday)
* 32 team tournament
* 6 game minimum
* 120 colleges, universities, and professional clubs attended last year's tournament looking for future baseball players
It is my ambition to take 18 good high school junior, sophomore, and freshman baseball players and compete in some very good baseball games.
I will need a commitment as soon as possible, and here is what this will all entail:
* Practice on Sunday and or Monday (possibly Saturday) Out of town players if they can make it.
* Leave on Tuesday (preferable, but possibly on Wednesday depending on game time)
* Games start on Wednesday
The team will be known as the Sioux City Bancrofts in honor of Sioux City's native son and lone National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Dave Bancroft, who played Major League Baseball around the turn of the last century. This team will be organized through Total Baseball Development and will be coached by myself and Clint Little, an assistant from Morningside College and East High School. We are currently working on taking two other coaches as well. Our coaches will not be paid on this trip.
The player cost involved will be $175 each, payable to Total Baseball Development, and will cover:
* Tournament entry fee of $1,250
* Navy two button t-shirt/jerseys with Bancrofts on the front in script and numbers on the back and the front (yours to keep)
* Navy caps (yours to keep)
* White socks (yours to keep)
* Navy stirrups with red overedge (return after tournament)
* Navy belts (return after tournament)
* Equipment costs
* Indidental costs
Players will need to provide white pants, their own catchers gear, bats, and helmets. I believe that most high school coaches will oblidge on this.
Personal food and housing costs will be estimated at $200 and will cover:
* 4 players to a room at the Joplin Days Inn - including tax rooms will be approximately $85 each
* Hotel stay includes hot contential breakfast
* Food at $15 per day per person
This total then will aproximately be $375 to cover most all player costs, food, and housing expenses.
This is a very short turnaround time to pull this off, but I am doing this as I know it can be done and that we can take a competitive team to Joplin.
Please let me know by phone at 712-276-2360 as soon as possible if you are able to do this.
Thank you for your time and your interest in this great opportunity.
