The following players played in the Champlain Valley Baseball League and played, signed or were drafted at the professional level.

 

The lone CVBL alum to make it to the major leagues is Tom Browning.

Gary Barber

Following an outstanding career at Plattsburgh State Teachers College, Barber was signed to a contract by the New York Yankees. He attended spring training but was never assigned to a minor league team.

Tim Barcomb

Following a standout career at Clarkson University, Barcomb signed with the Evansville Otters of the independent Frontier League in 2004. Barcomb attended spring training.

Stafford Branch

Following an outstanding pitching career at Scotia High School, Branch was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 29th round of the 1969 June draft. Branch did not sign and attended Hudson Valley Community College where he was drafted again in the 5th round of the 1970 January draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. Branch played one year of minor league baseball going 2-1 with a 5.57 earned-run average for the Gulf Coast Cardinals.

Tom Browning

The only CVBL alum to make it to the major leagues, Browning was drafted in the 9th round of the 1982 June draft after a stellar career at LeMoyne College. Prior to attending LeMoyne, Browning was a standout at Franklin Academy in Malone. Browning finished his major league career with a 123-90 record and 1000 strikeouts for the Cincinnati Reds (1984-94) and Kansas City Royals (1995). Browning was a member of the World Champion Reds in 1990 and made one all-star team (1991). He also hurled a perfect game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 16, 1988.

Brian Burns

After a standout career with the Plattsburgh State Cardinals, Burns played for the 4th Ward A's.  Burns was signed by the Alpine Cowboys of the independent Pecos League for the 2014 season.

Pete Camelo

After a standout football career at Appalachian State, Camelo walked-on to the baseball team. Camelo was signed by the Montreal Expos in the spring of 1983. He played five seasons in the Expos minor-league system, making it as high as Double-A Jacksonville. Camelo finished his minor-league career with a .239 batting average, 63 home runs and 249 runs batted in.

Kevin Carney

Carney was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 24th round of the June 1972 draft and again by the California Angels in the January 1973 draft. Carney played his college baseball at Rollins.

Brian Casey

Casey was signed as a free-agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers following the conclusion of the 1978 CVBL Championship series.

Bill Currier

Following an outstanding career at the University of Vermont, Currier was drafted in the 6th round of the 1981 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. Currier spent three years in the Phillies organization hitting .221 with 15 homers and 66 RBI.

Matt Dahlin

Following a standout career at SUNY Plattsburgh, Dahlin competed in the developmental New York State League before signing with the Midwest Sliders of the independent Frontier League. Dahlin finished his rookie season witha 1-4 record and a 5.54 earned-run average. Dahlin was traded to the Edmonton Capitals of the Golden Baseball League and went to spring training in 2009 before being released. He signed with the Coastal Kingfish of the Continental Baseball League in June 2009. Dahlin recorded a 1-2 record in five appearances.

Billy Davis

After a standout career at Plattsburgh State, Davis signed with the New York State Developmental League for the summer of 2009. Following the conclusion of the NYSL, Davis signed with the Coastal Kingfish of the Continental Baseball League. Davis appeared in two games, hurling three innings. Davis was named the pitching coach of the New York Federals of the Can-Am League and has spent time on the active roster during 2011.

Jeff Doorey

Doorey was drafted by the Montreal Expos following a three-year career at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH. Doorey played one season for the Jamestown Expos of the New York-Penn League. He finished with a 1-2 record and a 2.94 earned-run average.

Seth Douglas

After a standout career at SUNY Canton, Douglas signed with the Alpine Cowboys of the independent Pecos League.  Douglas batted .355 with 22 hits in 62 at-bats, scoring 13 runs and driving in 15 runs.  Douglas had three doubles and one homer.  On the mound, Douglas appeared in six games, hurling six innings, striking out eight and registering a save.

Jared Duquette

Duquette signed as a free agent with the Saranac Lake Surge of the independent Empire Baseball League in 2024 following an outstanding career at St. Michael’s College.

Paul Giroux

Following a stellar football and baseball career at Ithaca College, Giroux was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the seventh round of the 1969 January draft. He played one season for Gastonia in the Western Carolina League batting .265 with two home runs and 10 RBI.

Giorgio Fuda

Following a four-year career at the University of Albany, Fuda played three seasons of independent league baseball: Nashua (Can-Am, 2006), Gateway (Frontier, 2008), Reno (Golden, 2008) and Alpine (Pecos, 2011).

Jeff Greene

Greene was drafted in the 19th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981 following his career at the University of Vermont. Greene spent one season in the organization batting .172 with one RBI.

Warren Horner

Following a standout career at St. Rose College, Horner signed with the Portsmouth Explorers of the independent Frontier League. In 1994, Horner batted .332 with two home runs and 42 runs batted in.

Jesse Izzo

A standout at Lake Placid, Izzo signed with the Saranac Lake Surge of the Empire Baseball League in June of 2023.  Izzo played collegiately at Franciscan University (OH).

Jody Johnston

A standout at Franklin Academy in Malone, Johnston was drafted in the third round of the 1980 draft by the New York Mets. Johnston spent six seasons in the minor leagues, recording a 45-31 record and a 4.67 earned-run average.

Following a solid career at Castleton State, Keegan signed with the Malone Border Hounds of the independent Empire Baseball League.

Russ Keller

Following a solid career at LeMoyne College, Keller was signed as a free agent by the Houston Astros. Keller played one season with Auburn of the New York-Penn League, hitting .263 with two homers and 11 RBI.

Andrew Kneussle

Kneussle signed with the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds of the Empire Pro League during the 2022 season.  Kneussle played four seasons at Canisius (2016-19).  Kneussle appeared in five games, including three starts, recorded a 1-1 record, and struck out 17 batters in 15 innings pitched.

Tom Kowalowski

Following a remarkable career at Lyon Mountain High School, Kowalowski was signed by the New York Yankees. Kowalowski spent seven seasons in the minors, hitting 51 home runs and driving in 318 runs. At Greensboro in 1963, Kowalowski hit 18 homers and had 94 RBI.

Kyle Kowalowski

After a standout career at Plattsburgh State, Kowalowski signed with the New York State Developmental League for the summer of 2009. Following the conclusion of the NYSL, Kowalowski signed with the Texarakana Gunslingers of the Continental Baseball League.

Andrew Kramer

Kramer signed with the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds of the Empire Pro League during the 2022 season.  Kramer played two seasons at Plattsburgh State (2015-16).

Todd LaValley

Following a solid career at LeMoyne College, LaValley signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Dodgers. LaValley spent three seasons in the Dodgers organization recording a 9-13 record. In 1992, he compiled a 4-3 record with 47 strikeouts for Yakima of the Northwest League.

Following a solid career at Castleton State, Marlow signed with the Saranac Lake Surge of the independent Empire Baseball League.

Jason Miller

Drafted in the 42nd round by the Toronto Blue Jays following a standout career at Plattsburgh High School, Miller decided to attend the College of St. Rose. After a record-setting career for the Golden Knights, Miller was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 24th round of the 1994 draft. Miller spent one season with the Gulf Coast Rangers, batting .190 with 11 RBI.

Zach Miner

Following a solid career at SUNY Canton, Miner signed with the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds of the independent Empire Baseball League.

Andy Noonan

Following a standout career at Clarkson University, Noonan pitched for the Plattsburgh Cardinals during the 2005 season. Noonan signed with the Edinburg Coyotes of the United Baseball League in 2006 and pitched two seasons compiling a 5-5 record in 66 appearances.

Chris Pageau

Following an exceptional freshman season at Schenectady Community College, Pageau was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 47th round of the 1991 draft. Pageau did not sign and after his sophomore year at Schenectady, finished his collegiate career at the University of South Carolina-Aiken.

Stephen Peryea Jr.

Peryea signed with the Saranac Lake Surge of the independent Empire Pro Baseball League near the conclusion of the 2022 season.  Peryea earned an opening-day roster spot for the 2023 season.

Don Picard

Picard was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 10th round of the 1968 draft following a star-studded career at Lyndon State College. Picard spent two seasons in the organization compiling a 2-1 record.

Danny Roeser

After a standout two-year career at SUNY Plattsburgh, Roeser signed with the developmental New York State League in 2011. Roeser signed with the Plattsburgh Redbirds of the Empire Baseball League in 2017. Roeser batted .194 with eight stolen bases as the Redbirds captured the post-season championship.

Doug Ross

Ross was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics in the 34th round of the 1967 draft following an exceptional career at Crown Point High School. Ross spent five seasons with the Athletics organization. In 1970 with Quincy of the Midwest League, Ross compiled a 5-3 mark with a 1.74 earned-run average.

Mike St. Louis

St. Louis was drafted by three different major league teams, but never signed: Detroit Tigers, 18th round June; Montreal Expos, 1st round, January 1974; Chicago White Sox, 2nd round, June 1974.

Matt Stevens

Stevens was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 29th round of the 1989 MLB draft out of LeMoyne College.  Stevens pitched seven seasons of professional baseball and compiled a 33-19 career record.  Stevens spent parts of four seasons at the Triple-A level.

Neil Stevens

After the completion of an exceptional high school career at Beekmantown, the Minnesota Twins drafted Stevens in the 9th round of the 1991 draft. Stevens played two seasons in the Twins organization compiling a 5-9 career record.

Jim Wallace

Wallace was selected in the 16th round of the 1997 draft by the Houston Astros following his career at the University of North Carolina. Wallace spent two seasons with the organization compiling a 4-9 record.

Zack Welch

After a standout career at Plattsburgh State, Welch signed with the New York State Developmental League for the summer of 2008. Welch was signed by the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Continental Baseball League for the 2009 season. Welch batted .315 in 30 games. He had one double, one triple, 14 RBI and six stolen bases. Welch played for the Big Bend Cowboys of the CBL during the 2010 season and then was signed by the Shreveport-Bossier Captains of the American Association. He began the 2011 season with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League. Welch played the 2012 season with the Abilene Prairie Dogs of the North American League.

Ryan Whalen

Whalen signed with the Plattsburgh Thunderbirds of the Empire Pro Baseball League during the 2021 season.  Whalen, a graduate of Plattsburgh High School and a four-year standout at Plattsburgh State, earned the win in his debut with five shutout innings.
