07 WORKOUTS UNDERWAY.......

December 23, 2006
Merry Christmas boys! And to our Jewish friends, Happy Hanukah!

It’s been a crazy month with work and the rug-rats, but I’m back and ready to keep this site updated.

First let me start off with a congrats to our All-Star reps. Nice job!
Secondly, thank you to all of you who made it out to Todd Teeter’s Jersey retirement night/farewell party. He was touched and grateful. I thought we almost got him to tear up, but he wouldn’t do it. I also think he might have been a little too drunk to.

Teeter was presented with an awesome plaque donated by Jose Rosado’s Deltona Trophy Shop. With a brief description of what we were looking for and only 48 hours notice, Jose crafted a great looking plaque with pictures off this web site, an engraving of Teeter’s accomplishments and a ball holder to house the ball that was the final out of Todd’s last game as a Marlin.
Teeter also saw his number 23 officially retired. The first number to ever be retired by this organization.
Pictures of the plaque and party will be posted on photo albums link soon.
We’re going miss you Todd, best of luck!

Now on to our upcoming tournament and spring season;

We will be having a practice Saturday Dec 30th at 10am at Gaston Foster. Please try and make it out as we won’t have too many chances to practice. The season is tentatively scheduled to start early to mid February as to get in as many games as possible before the rainy season. These practices are for the entire team, not only the guys on the tournament team. You may even spot a couple of non-roster invitees out on the field to help with our workouts.

We all saw last spring what we are capable of and I really feel, with a little extra work and fine tuning, we could be even better than last season!
We did lose a huge bat in Todd and Drew’s status is not looking good as of right now, but we have added what looks to be solid sticks in Danny Lopez and JC Farias, and 06 all-star Glenn Reichle will be rejoining us after his fall season hiatus.

The cost for the league the 07 season is unknown as of yet, but figure roughly around the same as last year (around $225). Let’s try to get that in as soon as we can.

As far as tournament money, please get with Doug if you have committed to the tournament. He laid out one heck of a bundle to register the team. We have some alternates waiting in the wings if you can no longer make it, but we have to know ASAP so we can let them know. The Tourney fee is an astronomical $230 for a 3 game guarantee.

2006 was a great year for the Marlins, and we hope to continue our progress in 07. Some teams have really upgraded and re-loaded, so it won’t be easy. We’ll need to focus and work hard at our winter workouts.

Hope to see all of you out there next Saturday!
Here’s a look back at 2006 and our fall leaders………..
Have a safe and happy holiday!!!!!!!

MARLINS IMPROVING STEADILY.......

December 31, 2006
With every practice you can just see the rust peeling off these determined players, as they prepare for their first tournament and the upcoming 07 season.

Some old faces came out for a workout in two Robs. First, as expected, P/2B Robb Cymerman returning from his fall hiatus, fresh and ready to go. "It felt great to be out there again. It's been so long, and I can't wait for the season to begin!"

But an unsuspected body was present at his first workout since shattering his humerus bone that fateful day last year. 1B/P Rob Hancock returned to his favorite ball club. "I could not believe how good he looked out there today" said Marlin's skipper Rich Musumeci. "Less than 18 months after breaking his arm, he's out here throwing, hitting and fielding like nothing ever happened!".

"I feel pretty good considering" said Hancock. "Legs are a little tight, but I think overall I held up well."
Hancock looked sharp at 1B in the team's infield practice and situational drills. "He was scooping up just about everything thrown to him in the dirt. You'd never know by watching him today, that he hasn't been doing anything but drinking beer, eating doritos and scratching himself for the last year and a half!" joked Musumeci.

Hancock is trying to work himself back on the team, and with a showing like the one today, he looks like he just might do it.

It was great to see both veterans out there on the field. The Marlins are looking forward to having them back in the clubhouse.

Next practice is this Thursday evening at 6pm at Gaston Foster.
Please try and make it out, especially if you haven't yet.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE........

January 5, 2007
Good turnout Thursday night guys! Next 2 practices are scheduled for this Sunday from 8:45-11am, and Tuesday night from 6-8pm. Both at Gaston Foster.
These will be the last practices before the tournament which will begin Friday 1/12 at 1pm.

That first game will be at Sanford Stadium vs. the Savannah Bisons. Disney Tounament in Sanford you ask? Yeah, we can't figure it out either.
However, Saturday's games will be at Disney field 26 beginning at 11:30am against the Birmingham Dodgers followed by a 2:45pm game vs. the Tampa Tides.

Please arrive at games at least 45 min early so Doug can get the roster in in time.

Any questions please call or email Doug or myself.

Now, as far as our season;
League dues this year will be (gasp)$240. That includes a 24 game schedule, insurance, balls, all star game, playoffs, etc.
The league is looking to begin play early February.
A payment schedule for all teams was emailed to us.
By January 21st, we will need to have at least 10 paid players ($2400)
in order to be locked in.
I know it will be rough for you guys who just laid out $230 for the tourney, but I just wanted to give you all a heads up as early as I could.

There will be a few changes. They are going to try an attempt to keep league wide stats and have leaders posted on a web site. Details are still in the works.
There are alot of teams looking to play this season. Over 20 teams are looking to apply, so it should be one of the most competitive and fun seasons yet!

Let's dust off those mits and cleats and get to workin!
Please let me know of your intentions as far as playing. I know we have a few injured fish as well as a couple of returning ones. I Want to get a head count as soon as possible.

MARLINS LOSE MARLYN FOR THE SEASON........

The Marlin's ultimate utility player may be lost for the season due to a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder.

Marlyn Kelch, the team's most versatile player, will be undergoing surgery later this month. Early reports were that his youngest son beat him unmercifully with a wiffleball bat. But team officials have learned it was actually his eldest son who inflicted the damage.

One unconfirmed story had this scenario;
Down by 10 in a family pick-up basketball game, Marlyn tripped his 6'1" 15 year old son on a drive to the basket. His son, scraped knees and chin, decked Marlyn and dropped him where he stood. He then proceeded to twist his throwing arm counter clockwise, like something you'd see in an ultimate fighting championship match, practically tearing the limb off.

Marlyn cried UNCLE, but the damage was already done.
More on this story as it develops......

We wish Marlyn the best of luck, and hope he returns as soon as possible!

TONY AND TOURNEY UPDATES........

January 12, 2007
A quick little update.......First, and most important, Tony Burnham's progress;
It seems that Tony wasn't pulling our leg when he said he'd be able to be on the field in February.
Sources close to the situation have confirmed a positive prognosis from team doctors which has bad-ass #5 ready to play ball in as little as six weeks!
Is this kid tough as nails, or what? The John Wayne of the Orlando MSBL is now home resting and preparing for his return to the team.
God bless you kid! Can't wait to see you back out there!

In tourney news, our beloved Orlando Marlins were beaten by the Savannah Bisons today at beautiful historic Sanford Stadium by a score of 10-2.
The score does not indicate how close the game was for a while.
The Marlins jumped out to a 1-0 lead out of the gate on a lead off double by SS Danny Lopez who scored on a Jason Cooper single, but the Bisons struck back with a quick 2 in the bottom half of the 1st
off Marlins starter Joe Del Valle.
The game would remain that score for several innings, as both pitchers settled down to give their teamates a chance to push some runs across.

The Bisons were able to do just that in the 6th off some timely hits and a couple of Marlin miscues.
Down 8-2 in the 7th, the Fish made some noise when they loaded the bases with nobody out, but the Savannah reliever bared down and shut the door and tacked on 2 more in the bottom of the 7th for a 10-2 victory.
Plenty of baseball left for our heroes, as they take on Birmingham and Tampa Bay in a Disney doubleheader beginning at 11:30am on field 26.

Come on out and support your team!!

GO FISH!!!

SEASON RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.........

January 17, 2007
Ok my little fishies; The moment of truth is here.

If you are playing this season, I will need to collect $$ very shortly. I will need 9 more players paid by this Sunday AM (I have 1 so far).
As I stated in my email, the league is playing "hardball" so to speak. There are as many as 23 teams interested in competing this spring, and although that would be great, the league won't accept any team after this Sunday.
I would love to be able to front the money, but I am in no position to do so right now.

Please get with me before Sunday morning before the 8am managers meeting at Jones so we can register our team.

We have a full squad planning on returning, as well as a couple of new guys expressing interest and waiting for an opening.
Please let me know as soon as you can of your status for this season.

Thanks!

Now for the fun part...., Our next practice is scheduled for this coming Sunday at 11am to 1pm at Gaston Foster on Curry Ford.
Doug has reserved and paid for the field for us. We are being charged $10 per hour, so if you would, please bring $2 with you so we can reimburse him.
He has already incurred the cost of the tournament practices, so I'd like to make sure it doesn't cost him anymore money.

Lets have a great turnout Sunday, as there aren't many more chances to practice before the season begins, and as the tournament results show, we need some work.

GO FISH!!!!

MARLIN'S FIRST TOURNEY A DISSAPPOINTMENT.....

The Orlando Marlins had high hopes for their first tournament as a team, but came up empty going 0 for 3.

The Disney Holiday Classic kicked off in Sanford last Friday, and saw the Fish downed by the Savannah Bisons 10-2. Starter Joe Del Valle looked good and kept his team close for 6 innings, but the defense couldn't hold and the game got out of hand.
"Joe looked very good out there, especially for his first outing of the year" said tournament manager, Doug Elliott. "we were just lacking in the run dept."

The tourney resumed Saturday morning at the beautiful Wide World of Sports complex when the Marlins took on the defending champion Birmingham Dodgers. Marlin's starter Jimmy Groves looked like he was in mid season form, pitching a complete game holding the hard hitting club to 2 ER while striking out 8, but once again the Marlins bats were silent as theyt went on to lose 3-1.
"This game showed we do have a very good squad" said Groves. "We just need to work on putting the ball in play. Defense was pretty sound and kept us close."
Groves pitched extremely well, despite a torn muscle in his back. He'll be resting for a couple of weeks before rejoining the team for pre-season workouts.

Game 3 saw a dejected Marlins squad playing a meaningless game against the Tampa Bay Tides, losing that one 15-5. Relievers Perry Teague and Shaun Regan looked good in there outings.

"If nothing else, this shows us what we need to focus on before the season begins" said Elliott.

TWO MORE FISH ON THE SHELF.......

January 23, 2007
It has been a bit of a rough off-season for the Orlando Marlins, as they continue to battle player’s job changes and injuries before they even step on the field.

Joining Bill Kerkmann, Drew Stafford, Todd Teeter, Jason Taddie and Marlin Kelch on the list of Marlins not playing this 07 season, are 1B/OF Colin Brady and 1B/OF/P Glenn Reichle.

Reichle regretfully informed the team Monday of his schedule which will prohibit him from making most of the games. “Our lineup is getting thin by the day, and this won’t help matters” said manager Rich Musumeci.
The Marlins were counting on the 2006 all-star to help ease the loss of the team’s two best hitters, Teeter and Stafford, as they attempt to return to the playoffs after coming to within one game of the championship last June.
The offensively challenged Fish will have to try and replace these bashers quick, as the season begins in less than 3 weeks.

“We are scouring the free agent market” said bench coach Jimmy Groves.
“Maybe we should hold an open tryout at a softball tournament and cross our fingers”

Reichle will be missed, in more than one way and the team hopes he makes it back eventually.

Colin Brady, who has been improving steadily since joining the team in the spring of 05, has hit the D.L. for the 3rd time. This time with nerve damage in his non-throwing arm, leaving him numb from the elbow down. Doctors expect a full recovery, but it will be a long one.

Rumors are circulating on how Brady exactly sustained the injury. One of which involves a TV dinner, a plastic spoon and a New England Patriot loss in the AFC championship game.
Brady could not be reached for comment, but team officials are investigating.

SCRIMMAGE GAME SET FOR SUNDAY MORNING…..

The Marlins will be taking on the Orlando Pirates this Sunday morning at Gaston Foster, although a time has not been set. “It will either be a 9 or 10am start” said scheduler Doug Elliott.
“We will be communicating the time to the team shortly.”

*****Please bring a check with you Sunday. We do have a couple of weeks for the remainder of the loot, but lets not wait until the last minute.
Thanks to those of you who have already paid and at least contacted me.
Looking forward to a great season!*****

MARLINS SURE-UP OFFENSE WITH 2 BIG SIGNINGS.......

January 29, 2007
The Orlando Marlins, still reeling from the loss of power hitters Todd Teeter, Drew Stafford and most recently, Glenn Reichle, have hit it big with the signings of former Met 3B/1B Josh Montero and rookie free agent OF Will Bodie.

Montero, who was released by the Mets upon his request, was toying with the idea of playing 18+ baseball, but the lore of the stability and growth of the 28+ MSBL proved too much of a draw.

After a few phone calls and late night meetings between Montero’s agent, Giovanni Di Pasquali and Marlin brass, Montero has landed on the third year team’s roster.
“We couldn’t be happier” said a relieved Joe Del Valle. “That kid can hit a ball, and we certainly needed some power to replace our former teammates. “

Also signing with the Marlins is standout CF Will Bodie. Bodie, a Tampa resident and former UT phenom, also sports some power, as well as exceptional speed and both are projected to bat 5th and 6th in the lineup to protect Marlins All-star cleanup hitter Darrin Reichle.

“If I were the opposing pitcher, this is one lineup I would NOT be looking forward to pitching against” said manager and acting GM, Rich Musumeci.
“Guys like incumbent players Bobby Esteves, Jose Rosado, Doug Elliott and Tony Burnham at the bottom half of the lineup is just filthy. "

Marlin’s fans are really excited now. Said one fan, among a small crowd awaiting Montero’s arrival at the team’s training facility,
“This is what we needed! Our pitching and defense are already post season ready. Now we have the bats to go with them! GO FISH!!!”

It will be interesting to see how well the mighty Fish do after tasting the post season last year. “We want to get back there in the worst way” said utility player Doug Elliott, who may be looking at his last season as a Marlin due to a possible move out of state in July. “We came so close to the championship last season, I really wanted to be here when we make it all the way.”

That, and for many reasons, it’s a “win now” philosophy in the Marlin’s clubhouse.
“We’re going all out this year” claimed a Marlin executive. “We need to take advantage of our powerful, yet aging pitching staff, and the luxury of having Jimmy Groves around. Who knows how long he will be here, or how long the staff can pitch at the level they are at now, not to mention the depth that we have at that position.”

Marlin’s fans should be in store for some great baseball. The team is as talented as it’s ever been. Unfortunately, the league is as talented as IT’S ever been as well.
At least 20 teams will be competing for that coveted CFMSBL Championship ring, and the Marlins are hoping the 2007 version will be theirs.
GO FISH!!!

MARLINS FINISH PRESEASON UNDEFEATED!!....

February 5, 2007
The Orlando Marlins, led by returning veteran Rob Hancock, won their first, last and ONLY game of their 2007 spring training season by a score of 12-3 against a severely shorthanded Pirates squad.

You can't take too much from this game, but it was nice to actually see some Marlins crossing home plate for a change.

There were 15 hits churned out by our Fishies, with some memorable ones from cleanup hitter Darrin Reichle, rookie free agent Will Bodie, Bobby Esteves and Tony- call me John Wayne- Burnham. Crazy Joe Del Valle showed he sports some serious power, as he blasted one over the centerfield fence for a solo shot.

But no player shined as bright as veteran 1B Rob Hancock.
Hancock, fresh of an 18 month stint on the DL after breaking his throwing arm in a game in the summer of 2005, put on a clinic, going 3 for 4 with 6 RBI's.
"I really didn't think he'd ever play again" said CF Bobby Esteves."It's great to see him back. It will be a nice surprise if this is what we will see from him once the season starts!"

Hancock made a strong bid for a return to his number 2 spot in the lineup.
"I've been waiting for this day for a long time" said Hancock. "I was a bit nervous when I first came out here, but once I stepped up to the plate, my fears were gone."

Just what the Marlins needed, ANOTHER hot bat in the lineup!

Defense was solid, if not down right stingy. The middle infield of SS Danny Lopez and 2B Shaun Regan might possibly be one of the best in the league.
Lopez and Regan turned some nice looking double plays, and Perry Teague, the team's wandering infielder, showed he can be a force at 3B as he is elsewhere.

Rookie outfielder Will Bodie and recently signed utility player Nelson Rodriguez looked sharp, with the latter making a diving play in right to steal a hit away from Pirate manager Joe Dillulo.

As usual the Marlin arms were stifling. Del Valle, Groves, Reichle, Teague and Burnham all pitched well, and showed why they are the foundation of this proud franchise's pitching staff.

Opening day, or should I say opening MORNING, is right around the corner.
Sunday February 11th at Jones H.S. field 2 vs. the Orlando Astros. First pitch is 8:30am.

The team is leaning towards the hard throwing Jimmy Groves as the starter, providing his back is 100%. But as usual for the first few games of the season, it will be pitch-by-committee.

GO FISH!!!

MARLINS WIN FIRST OPENER IN TEAM HISTORY...

February 16, 2007
The Orlando Marlins won their opening game for the first time in franchise history, by beating the Astros 13-4 in 7 innings.

Marlin's starter Jimmy Groves worked through the first 4 innings surrendering 1 run on 5 hits, 3 BB's while striking out 6. "His back was tightening up a bit, so he didn't want to push it" said Groves's agent, Scott Boris.

Joe Del Valle took the win when he came on in the 5th, but surrendered an uncharacteristic 3 runs in 3 innings but struck out 4.
What Del Valle DID do, was drive in 3 runs, going 3 for 4 with a BB, 2 doubles, earning him the J&J Builders Player of the Game honors.
But he will have to share that title this game, as Tony Burnham received co-Player of the Game honors for his 3 for 3 outing, fresh off his D.L. trip due to a mild heart attack.
Burnham, who started last season off 0 for 20, came flying out of the box this season showing nothing will slow this guy down.

The Marlins pounded out 15 hits against a normally solid Jason Laub. "We did very well Sunday, but make no mistake, that was not the same Laub we've seen before" said manager Rich Musumeci. "I don't want anyone getting too cocky."

Defensively for the Marlins, it was as close to perfect as it could get, with 0 errors recorded. "Very smooth" said Groves of his defense.

OUTSTANDING job guys! Great start. Let's keep it rolling!

Next up for the Marlins are the Pirates, this Sunday morning at 8:30am.
Getting the nod on the hill is Crazy Joe Del Valle, 1-0 9.00 ERA.

GO FISH!!!

FISH NARROWLY ESCAPE PIRATE FISHING NETS, 3-2…..

February 20, 2007
The Orlando Marlins squeaked by the Pirates (0-2) Sunday, to up their record to 2-0.
It was a cold one out there and hits weren’t exactly coming in bunches, but the Marlins were able to scrape across just enough for the victory.

Driving in the final and what turned out to be the game winning run was former leadoff hitter Bobby Esteves. Esteves blasted a double to the base of the left field fence, scoring Will Bodie who reached on a HBP. "He(Esteves) had a great day at the plate and on the base paths, EXCEPT FOR ONE UNSOLICITED SB ATTEMPT!" said Owner/GM/Manager Rich Musumeci.
With his 3 hits, 2 SB’s and that RBI, Esteves earned the J&J Builders Player of the Game honor.
Also noteworthy was Jose Rosado’s 2 for 3 day, before injuring himself for the 42nd time since joining the club, and Del Valle’s 8 innings of solid pitching which gave him his 2nd win of this very young season.

Behind the dominant pitching of Joe Del Valle and Jimmy Groves, and just enough offense, the Fish are off to their best start in franchise history.
“We’re 2-0, and our ace hasn’t thrown a pitch yet” said Musumeci.
The fact is, no one has thrown a pitch aside from Groves and Del Valle.
“We’ve got a stud starter and 6 competent, if not dominant, relievers waiting on the call” said P/Utility Tony Burnham. “Whenever that is, we’ll be ready! Until then, we’ll just sit back and enjoy the Joe and Jimmy show.”

After only 2 games, it is difficult to say this team is destined for the post season, but you have to feel good about its chances.
With the additions of Josh Montero, Will Bodie and Nelson Rodriguez, guys who haven’t even begun to do what they are capable of, the offense is in pretty good shape.
The losses this team endured during the off season will be felt a little less, and to think there MAY be an outside chance C Drew Stafford can return before the latter part of the season, is quite intriguing.

Enjoy the ride Fish fans, this is shaping up to be one heck of a year!

The next test for our heroes is a doozy. The 2-0 Orlando Titans will try to derail the party train that is the Marlin express, Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm.
Starting pitcher for the Marlins has yet to be determined, but everyone will be available for this one.

GO FISH!!

(Guys, make sure your uniformed completely, as we will be having our team photo taken before the game and individuals throughout.)

The first 17 games of the season is now posted for your planning purposes.

TEAGUE SHINES, BUT FISH FALL 6-2.....

March 2, 2007
The Marlins (2-1) lost a tough one Sunday, against a fellow undefeated team in the Titans (3-0). The Titans were ready for the challenge as they came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to hand the Marlins their first loss of the season, 6-2.

The Fish couldn’t get anything substantial going against Titans starter Tony La Joe or reliever Jim Matoska. “We managed 9 hits, but we couldn’t do too much with them” said Marlin’s first baseman, Josh Montero. “I’d guess you’d call that, UN-timely hitting."

Marlins starting pitcher Joe Del Valle pitched well, despite an odd strike zone that both teams couldn’t figure out, surrendering 2 ER, 4 hits 7 BB’s and 4 K’s in 6 innings of work.
P Darrin Reichle came on in relief for the final 3 innings, but showed he isn’t quite “there” yet, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 3. “We will be giving him more and more work as the weeks go on” said manager Rich Musumeci. “There’s no reason to rush him. It’s a long season. He's our horse, and we're going to need him”

Defense was a little sloppy, as the Fish committed 5 errors, the most so far this season.

The J&J Builders Player of the Game award will be given out in losses as well as wins. This week’s stand out is Perry Teague. The Marlins roving infielder and shut-down relief pitcher played a solid game at 2B and SS after starter Shaun Regan injured his ankle sliding back into first base in the 6th.
“This guy can seamlessly fill in anywhere in the infield” said Musumeci. “Now we have to get him some innings on the mound!”
Congrats Perry! Great game!

The Marlins will look to bounce back Sunday night at 7pm, when they take on the Orlando Dodgers (1-2).
Scheduled starter for the Fish is Jimmy Groves, 0-0 1.80 ERA.

GO FISH!!!!

IN OTHER TEAM NEWS....

It wasn't widely known, but Marlin's owner/manager Rich Musumeci had a side bet with his friend and player, Robb Cymerman. Cymerman disclosed the bet late Sunday after the loss; Said Cymerman; "He said if we lost to the Titans, he would go out and buy one." So, not one to welch on his bets, Musumeci bought a Nissan Titan late Wednesday night.
"I ain't paintin her orange!" stated Musumeci, referring to the Titan's jersey color.
No word yet if he will be seeking monetary help from the Titan organization.

GROVES SPECTACULAR IN 1 HIT SHUTOUT......

March 7, 2007
The Orlando Marlins (3-1) shut down the O-Town Dodgers (1-4) Sunday night, 12-0. The win kept the Marlins in first place by a ½ game in the black and blue Tim Marsh division.
Marlins starting pitcher Jimmy Groves was brilliant, striking out 6 while surrendering 2 walks and 1 hit in 5 innings of work. “I felt pretty good out there” said Groves. “Pretty good” is an understatement. The closest the Dodgers got to scoring was in the first inning when Groves plunked the speedy leadoff hitter and walked the 2nd batter. Groves then proceeded to strike out the 3, 4 n 5 hitters to get out of the jam.

For his efforts, Groves received the J&J Builder Player of the Game award (sorry Jimmy, no cash value).

Defensively the Fish were flawless, although they only needed to make 9 put-outs!
The offense was strong, as the Fish pounded out 11 hits in 5 innings. Leading the way was cleanup hitter Darrin “I cracked another bat” Reichle, going 2 for 3 with a double and 3 RBI’s, followed by leadoff hitter Danny Lopez, who continues to chase Reichle and Del Valle for the RBI lead. Lopez was 2 for 3 with a double and 3 runs scored and a ribbie, giving him 4 on this young season so far. (Someone tell this guy he’s a leadoff hitter!....can you say, Jose Reyes?)
OF Jose Rosado and utility player Doug Elliott both chipped in with an RBI a piece and a 2 for 3 day.

Great game gentlemen! We need to keep up the intensity this week, as we play 4 games in 7 days, beginning with the doubleheader this Sunday! There are some tough teams on the horizon, and our nice 3-1 record could turn into 3-6 in a blink of an eye so come prepared to lay it on the line!

Game one Sunday is at high noon vs. a scrappy Yankees squad that is a lot better than their record (1-3), and they’ll be riding the wave of their 6-2 win against the Orlando Reds that saw their ace Curtis Leonard throw a no-no!

Game 2 will feature the hard hitting West Volusia Mariners, another team better than their record!
The rotation has not been etched in stone yet, as I will be discussing strategies with our staff in the next couple of days.

Rest up boys, we have a great opportunity here to pull away from the pack!

GO FISH!!!

GROVES DOMINANT AGAIN, CYMERMAN MAKES BID FOR ROTATION, MARLINS SWEEP........

March 13, 2007
*******UPDATE********

***After a slow start, the Lugnuts have run off three straight wins, scoring 35 runs in those games! They have obviously found their groove and have us in their sights. Our lead is down to a game and a half . They will be throwing a tough Jeff Francher 2-1 3.12 ERA, so be ready for a battle Thursday night!

Get ready Crazy Joe!!!!

GO FISH!!!*****

The Orlando Marlins (5-1) swept their double header Sunday, putting them 2 games up in the Tim Marsh Division, setting up a divisional showdown with the 2nd place Lugnuts (4-3) this Thursday night.

Marlin’ starter Jimmy Groves kicked the day off taking on a tough Yankee squad led by their ace, Curtis Leonard.
Fortunately for the Fish, Groves picked up where he left off last week, rolling through 7 innings surrendering 1 ER, 6 hits walking 2 and striking out 5, good enough for his 2nd win of the season and the J&J Builder’s Player of the Game award for the 2nd week in a row. (STILL no cash value, sorry).

But this week he’ll have to share the award, as 1B Josh Montero will take part in the glory. Josh broke out in this game, going 3 for 4 , driving in the game’s first run with a blast into right centerfield good enough for a 3 bagger. Montero also picked up a SB in that game.
Combined both games, Montero’s numbers were nasty; 5 for 8, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI’s and a SB.
“That’s what we knew we had when we signed him!” said the jubilant Marlin’s GM/Manager, Rich Musumeci.
“We are fortunate enough to have not one, but TWO left-handed power hitters.”
Congrats Joshua! Welcome home!

Also deserving recognition is fellow 1B Rob Hancock who has returned to the team after his horrific arm injury in 2005. Hancock went 3 for 4 as well, with an RBI and a run scored.

Defensively, the Marlins were fairly tight, save the 7th inning, when an ill-advised throw allowed the tying run to cross the plate.
Leading the way for both games was SS Danny Lopez. Lopez continues to impress, making play after play after play, making good on his promise that he made in the fall that he will get better and better as he gets more comfortable…… I guess he’s comfortable.

SP Darrin Reichle continues to get work out of the bullpen, as he appeared in relief in both games, getting the save in the 1st. “He (Reichle) is looking sharp” said Musumeci. He should be ready to make his first start in 2 weeks.”

Game two against the fledgling Mariner’s squad, SP Robb Cymerman got the nod, despite not starting since game 1 in the 2nd round of the 2006 playoffs.
Cymerman started off a bit rough, falling behind in counts and throwing some “offline” pitches, but recovered and settled in for a nice 108 pitch performance- 7 innings, 1 ER, 5 hits, 2 walk’s while striking out 6.

“I had to shake some rust off” said the veteran right-hander. “I noticed as I was warming up, I was making Crazy Joe nervous by not throwing a single strike”. No one was nervous after he settled in. Cym also added two nifty defensive plays, one a dive to his right to snag a line drive.

Management was so impressed with Cym’s outing, the crafty right hander was named J&J Builder’s Player of the Game.

The Marlins needed these wins, as the road gets rough the next few weeks.
Up next for the surging Fish is the division rival Orlando Lugnuts. The Lugnuts are 3-3 as of this writing, but have been the victim of a tough schedule thus far. Definitely a team to be careful with, as it boasts quality veteran hitters up and down the lineup and a very experienced and successful pitching staff.

Taking the hill for the Marlins will be Crazy Joe Del Valle 2-1, 2.65 ERA. Del Valle has had plenty of rest and will be raring to go against some of his former teammates.

GO FISH!!!!!!!

LUGNUTS MOVE TO WITHIN 1/2 GAME, DOWN FISH 19-2......

March 17, 2007
“Yikes!” exclaimed 3B Jimmy Groves after Thursday night’s game against the Orlando Lugnuts (5-3).
Yikes indeed. The first place Orlando Marlins (5-2) fielded a skeleton crew and took a beating losing 19-2 in 4 innings in a rain soaked game, marking the franchise’s most lopsided loss in its existence.

With Groves and Darrin Reichle having just pitched on Sunday, Robb Cymerman and Perry Teague out of town and scheduled starter Joe Del Valle out with a back injury, the Marlins were forced to turn to their under worked bullpen to fill the void.

Starter/ reliever Tony Burnham got the nod for the start, but lasted only 2 innings as the Lugnuts took advantage of some walks, errors and passed balls to knock Burnham out of the game after 59 pitches.
“It was not fair to expect a complete game shut out from Bernie” said manager Rich Musumeci. “The guy hasn’t pitched much at all since the spring 06 playoffs. Combine that with what he’s been through since then (Achilles, heart), it’s amazing he was able to take the mound at all!”

Burnham worked through the wet conditions surrendering 6 runs (1 ER), 2 hits, and 5 BB’s while picking up a strike out.
The move to strengthen the defense was made in the 3rd, as Burnham relieved Doug Elliott behind the plate so he could relieve OUTFIELDER/EH Musumeci at 2nd base.
OF/RP Steven Tolbert came on in relief for his first work of the season.
His first inning wasn’t too bad as the 3 outs that were recorded were K’s, but the rust would show in the 4th as Tolbert was charged with 10 runs (5 ER), 3 hits, 5 BB’s, 3 HBP with 3 K’s in an inning and a 1/3rd.

SS Danny Lopez came on for the final 2/3rd’s to put out the fire despite not pitching in 10 years, but the Nutters recorded 3 more before calling it a night.

Not much to brag about on the Marlin’s side of this game, except for another solid effort from 1B Josh Montero. Montero was 2 for 2 and a run scored which qualifies him for the J&J Builders Player of the Game award. “Yeah, I’m not proud of this one” joked Montero. “I want to forget about this one. I’ll take the trophy, but I ain’t displaying it!”

Also worthy of mention was Jimmy Groves blast that drove in Elliott in the 2nd. “That was a smash!” said a teammate. “Let’s hope he’s out of that slump!”

All in all, it was a night to forget. If only the Marlins were lucky enough to have the umpires that were on field 2 for the Titan/Tiger game. That game started late and was called early due to lightening in the area. Certainly not long enough to count as a full game.

The Fish will attempt to re-group this Sunday in Lakeland, as they take on the tough Lakeland Tigers (5-1).
On the hill for the good guys playing 56 feet from his bedroom will be Jimmy Groves 2-0, 1.06 ERA taking on, in all probability, Tigers ace Ben Ally 1-1, 0.96 ERA.
Should be one heck of a pitchers duel!

P.S. The meeting point has been changed to the IHOP at the same exit. I-4 to exit 32. As you come down you'll see the Hooters. make a right and enter IHOP Parking lot. Please try to be there by 9:45am. We will be leaving there by 10am to head to the field.

Any complications, please call my cell. Thanks!

GROVES, BURNHAM LIFT FISH PAST TIGERS, 3-2.......

March 20, 2007
The Orlando Marlins (6-2) cruised on down to Lakeland this past Sunday, the first of two games there this week, to take on the Lakeland Tigers (5-2).
Knowing they’d most likely be facing the Tigers staff ace Ben Ally, they had to counter with one of their own studs. Who better than the red hot Jimmy Groves?

Groves knew the importance of this game. He knew the Lugnuts, after destroying his beloved Marlins the previous Thursday night, would in all likelihood find a way to beat the struggling Braves. Knew the Nutters were only a ½ game back as play began Sunday morning, and with a Marlin loss would take the division lead.
He also knew the team that took the field with him Sunday morning is capable of winning any game.

Teamed with his battery mate Tony Burnham, Groves set out on his 3rd straight dominating performance, working 6 solid innings surrendering 1 ER, scattering 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6.
“Just an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay” said Groves.

Mentioning “pay” has been Groves thing this season, fueling his critic’s comments on why he his having such a great year thus far. “What a coincidence” said one MSBL official. “He just happens to be in a contract year, and his ERA is that of a young Roger Clemens.”
“My client is NOT financially motivated to play well” said Groves’ agent Scott Boris. “We want what’s fair for him, sure, but don’t think for a minute he doesn’t put his team first!”

Marlin’s management has been quiet on the issue, choosing not to make money or one player’s contract negotiations a distraction for the team.
“We’ll see how the season plays out” said team spokesperson Giovanni Di Pasquale. “He (Groves) will have every opportunity to stay with the ball club once the season is over. Right now all we’re concerned about is winning ballgames.”

One player NOT in a contract year is Utility player Tony Burnham. The versatile veteran has taken less money to stay with the team year after year, and continues to play at a high level.
This week, his play behind the plate earned him the coveted J&J Builder’s Player of the Game award. Burnham was in complete control of this game, despite only throwing out one base runner out of many. “Bernie’s arm was shot from Thursday night’s start on the mound” said Musumeci. Believe me, there wouldn’t have been a Tiger running game had his arm been fresh.
Burnham had several nice plays behind the plate, including 2 put outs and countless scoops to prevent passed balls that would have rolled forever due to the distant backstop of Lake Gibson H.S. field.
Bloodied and bruised, Burnham left it all on the field this week, and can rest well knowing his team won a very important game thanks in large part to him.

The Marlins overcame a couple of crucial errors and capitalized on their counterparts miscues to hold on for a 3-2 win.
“That kid was bringin it!” said one Marlin. 4 hits and 16 strikeouts, Ally deserved a better fate, but the day belonged to the first place Fish as they held off a surging Lugnuts squad just salivating at the taste of first place.
SP Crazy Joe Del Valle, just off the 7 day DL with a back injury, came on in relief in the 7th to earn the victory. “Joe started off a little stiff his first couple of batters, but once he settled in he was smooth as silk” said Musumeci. “It’s nice to have him back!”

Driving in crucial runs for the Marlins was 3B Doug Elliott and cleanup hitter Darrin Reichle. Reichle also scored the game winner on a couple of passed balls in the 7th.

Up next for our heroes is the best team in Central Florida right now, the Lakeland Crew (10-0). Taking the hill for his first start of the season will be Darrin Reichle 0-0, 3.86 ERA, and some well rested arms to back him up.

An inebriated Don Shula, former coach of the Miami Dolphins who led his 1972 team to an unduplicated undefeated season, called the Orlando Marlins late Monday night, urging manager Rich Musumeci to “do whatever it takes” to beat the Crew.
When Musumeci explained that the Crew had nothing to do with the NFL, and that it wasn’t even the same sport, Shula threatened to make him “disappear” and informed him that Larry Czonka and Bob Kuechenberg would be making the trip to Lakeland to “oversee” operations.
Marlin players are reportedly rallying behind their manager, and vow to do their best to unseat the Crew.

If you can’t get excited about this one, you better check your pulse!

GO FISH!!!!!!

FISH GET SLAMMED BY CREW, BOUNCE BACK VS. BRAVES......

March 30, 2007
The Orlando Marlins (7-3) couldn't complete the Lakeland road trip sweep, as they fell to the still undefeated Crew (12-0), 10-0.
The Marlin's big right hander Darrin Reichle making his first start of the season, severely pulled his groin in the first inning of Sunday's game and had to be assisted off the mound.
"It was a huge disappointment" said manager Rich Musumeci. “We were all pumped up and excited to give the Crew a battle. I know he is equally as upset. He was really looking forward to this start.”

The injury was a big blow to the Marlins, as the 41 year old veteran is out indefinitely.
Fellow starter Joe Del Valle was forced to take over in the 1st after a short warm up.
Del Valle wasn’t his usual dominant self, and aided by a couple of misplayed balls, fell behind quickly.

Jimmy Groves closed out the final 4 innings surrendering 1 unearned run in the 7th, which gave the Crew the run ruled victory.

For his efforts against the best team in the league, Groves once again receives the J&J Builder’s Player of the Game award, which the team is considering re-naming the J&J Builder’s Jimmy Groves award.

The team’s medical staff has turned once again to Reichle’s personal witch doctor for her extraordinary knack of getting him back on the field much earlier than expected.
Get well quick big man!

MARLIN’S BOUNCE BACK AGAINST A STRUGGLING BRAVES SQUAD, 5-2……

After giving his defense ulcers due to anxiety, Robb Cymerman won his 2nd game in as many tries Thursday night against the Braves. Cymerman chugged along at his own s l o w pace, frustrating hitters and his 3rd baseman.
“I couldn’t relax, he gets me so nervous” said 3B Joe Del Valle.
Cym’s unorthodox methods drag the game along. “He adjusts his cap, walks around the mound, adjusts his jersey, shakes 3-4 pitches off, and then begins his delivery” exclaimed SS Danny Lopez. “By then, half the infield is asleep!”

You can’t argue with success. Cymerman’s ERA usually floats around the high 2’s to low 3’s, so he does get the job done, albeit slowly.

RP Perry Teague relieved Cym in the 7th for his first outing of the season, retiring 3 of the 4 batters he faced.

Teague, the team’s closer since Jason Taddie hit the shelf with his elbow problems, may be looking at an expanded role in middle relief as the Marlin’s pitching coaches continue to groom 1B Josh Montero for the closer job. “He’s looking real sharp in his bullpen sessions” says pitching coach Lee Smith. “We may see him in action as early as Saturday!”

Breaking out the slumbering lumber was Crazy Joe Del Valle, going 3 for 3 with a run scored, RBI and a SB, and (oh no, not this name again) 3B Jimmy Groves with his 2 for 2 1 BB and 2 SB effort. Both share the J&J Builder’s Player(s) of the Game award!

Next up for the Marlins, as they try to keep pace with the streaking first place Lugnuts, are the Brewers (3-7) Sunday night at 7 pm.
On the hill is Joe Del Valle 3-2, 5.64 ERA.

GO FISH!!!

WRAP UPS, BREWERS THRU CARDS.....

April 8, 2007
DEL VALLE CARRIES FISH PAST BREWERS, 11-5….
Crazy Joe Del Valle was aces on the mound and at the plate, winning the J&J Builder’s Player of the Game award hands down.

Del Valle (4-2) was 4 for 5 with a triple and 4 RBI’s offensively, and went the distance on the hill surrendering just 2 ER on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 10.
Said one Marlin, “Crazy Joe was in command tonight. He was on a mission!”

Also having good games were Utility Perry Teague, who was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, IF Shaun Regan who busted out of his slump going 2 for 3 with a BB, 2 doubles an RBI and a SB.

REDS SCORE 4 IN THE 9TH TO TIE FISH, 5-5……

Marlins starting pitcher Jimmy Groves threw a beauty of a game, but ran out of gas in the 9th after throwing over 140 pitches. A rare bullpen failure and an error lead to a 5-5 tie in 10 innings.

Groves was on a roll, retiring 19 of 24 batters he faced between the 2nd and 8th inning, but gave way to closer Perry Teague in the 9th after back to back doubles and an error. Teague struck out the first batter he faced, but a couple of balls found their way through the infield and before you knew it, the game was tied.

Groves’s line; 8 innings, 2 ER, 6 hits, a BB and 10 K’s. Result for his efforts, a no decision. And no J&J Builder’s Player of the game award. This game’s recipient was utility player Nelson Rodriguez who, filling in for Rob Hancock in the number 2 hole, went 3 for 5 with a double, and made some nice defensive plays. “I’m real comfortable there (no.2 spot)” said N-Rod. “Hell, I’m comfortable anywhere.”

Grove’s agent Scott Boris was reportedly fuming at the decision that kept his client from receiving the award for the 5th time. “That was an outrage!” exclaimed Boris. “It is obvious they (the Marlins organization) are too cheap to pay my client what he was to earn!”
Groves’s asking price at the end of this season would inflate astronomically should he win the award a certain amount of times during the year.
More on this story as it develops.

VACATIONS, INJURIES AND XBL TRYOUTS TAKE THEIR TOLL ON MARLINS…..

The Orlando Marlins (8-4-1) slipped a little further away from first place, as the Lugnuts (9-3) continue to win and the Marlins players continue to exhaust themselves at the XBL tryouts being held here in Orlando.

With their 2, 3 and 4 hitters either sidelined with injury or on vacation, the Fish could only manage 3 hits off the Cardinals (6-6) starting pitcher. “I don’t know what happened” said Marlins captain Jimmy Groves. “We put the balls in play, we just couldn’t get them to turn into hits.”
The Marlins countered with Robb Cymerman who, fresh off his performance as the Easter Bunny just hours earlier, pitched well enough to win, surrendering 3 runs (2 ER) in 7 innings on 8 hits 3 BB’s 2 hit batters while striking out 4.
Shaun Regan came on in relief in the 9th for his first outing of the season and looked pretty solid, keeping his team in striking distance.

This game’s J&J Builder’s Player of the Game was SS Danny Lopez. Lopez was 1 for 3 at the plate with a SB, but earned it for his outstanding defensive effort. The young SS made several diving plays, and teamed up with 2B Shaun Regan for a couple of nicely turned double plays. “These two may very well make up one of the top middle infields in the league” said manager Rich Musumeci.

Overall a very flat effort by the good guys. Next Sunday begins a little marathon of games, beginning with the A’s at noon. The team should have most everyone back on the field, with the exception of P/OF Darrin Reichle (groin) and 1B Rob Hancock (knee).

On the mound for the Marlins and looking to add a spark back in the lineup will be Joe Del Valle 4-2, 4.60 ERA.

Let’s re-focus guys! Get to the cages!

POST GAME WRAP-UPS........

April 24, 2007
Wow, slacked off a bit. Lots of updating to do…well, here goes…..
First of all, Congrats to our 2007 spring All-Stars, Joe Del Valle and Jimmy Groves, who competed with the league's best Saturday night.
Nice job this season guys! You certainly earned it!

ROYALS STUN FISH....

The Orlando Marlins (10-5-1) were beaten by the upstart Royals last Thursday, 14-13. Ironically, 13 runs was the biggest offensive output of the season, yet it yielded a loss.

Marlins starting pitcher Robb Cymerman was not his sharpest, surrendering 8 runs (7 earned) on 12 hits, while walking 1 and hitting 2 through 6 innings. A rusty Shaun Regan came on in relief in the 7th, and was victimized by 4 Royals hits and an error. Marlin’s stopper Jimmy Groves came in to get the final out, but not before surrendering the game winning RBI.

“I think we underestimated the Royals” said Marlin’s manager Rich Musumeci. “These guys can hit.”

Despite the loss, some positive notes to come out of the game was power hitter Darrin Reichle returning to the lineup. D-Man contributed 2 RBI’s, one of them off a blast over the leftfield fence and into the trees, nearly killing a homeless man who lives in there.

Also having solid games was 1B Josh Montero (2 for 2, with a triple and 2 RBI’s), Utility Nelson Rodriguez (2 for 3, 3 runs scored, RBI) and the J&J Builder’s player of the Game award winner Jose Rosado with his 2 for 3, a double and 3 RBI night.

FISH SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER

Just 2 weeks ago, the Marlin’s front office received word from their medical staff that SP Darrin Reichle’s pitching services might not be available for the remainder of the season, due to the severely pulled groin he suffered back on March 25th.

Fast forward to Sunday…Taking on the Nat Haber division leading Mets (7-8), D-Man once again defies the odds and his medical caretakers and throws a gem; 8 innings, 8 hits, 2 unearned runs while striking out 13 with 1 walk for his first win of the season.

Needless to say, that performance earned him the J&J Builder Player of the Game award. It also gives the Marlins hope that they can possibly make a run at the playoffs after all.

Also worthy of mention was Utility player Nelson Rodriguez. N-Rod continues to impress at the plate, stroking 2 doubles and driving in 2.

Game 2 saw this season’s ace and All-star rep Jimmy Groves take on the Angels (7-8).
Groves went 7 innings and surrendered just 1 ER on 6 hits while walking and striking out 3 for his 3rd win of the season.
RP Tony Burnham came on for the final 2 innings for the save and looked like his old sharp self.

Leading the offensive charge was 1B Josh Montero and OF Jose Rosado with their 2 for 3 efforts.
The win was a team effort, but Groves gets the nod again for the J&J Builder's Player of the Game award.

The Marlins now begin their tough stretch of the season, as they face the Red Sox (x2), Crew, Lug Nuts, Titans, Tigers and Astros.

On the mound this Sunday against the always tough Dr. Phillips Red Sox, is Jimmy Groves 3-1, 1.29 ERA, pitching on his birthday weekend.

Come on out Marlin fans and show some support. The Red Sox will sure to have their own section behind them!

OTHER TEAM NEWS………
The Marlins released long time CF Bobby Esteves after Sunday’s incident and his request. “Nothing personal. Its just time to move on to a different team” said Esteves.
“I don’t know why you’d want to leave a team you’ve been with so long right in the middle of a playoff chase” questioned one Marlin.

“It’s a shame to see him go, but if someone doesn’t want to be here, then I certainly don’t want them here” said Musumeci. “I wish him well and hope he’s happy wherever he ends up. He's a good guy and we wish him the best.”

Not hours later, the Marlins filled the vacant spot with power pitcher Mickey Bono. Bono, who’s been pressured repeatedly by 1B/ Scout Josh Montero to join the squad, finally did so Sunday evening.
In a phone interview from his home in central Florida, Bono had this to say;
“I am thrilled to finally be a part of this organization. I am looking forward to contributing in any way that I can.”

WELCOME ABOARD MICKEY!!!

MARLINS NIGHT OUT.....

Don't forget to RSVP to Jimmy or myself for his birthday bash on Friday night at ESPN down by Disney's Boardwalk. Festivities begin at 7pm and go to...well, Jimmy's involved, so who knows when you'll be home. Let's have a huge turnout!

MARLINS DON'T SHOW FOR SHOWDOWN, LOSE 13-1...

May 3, 2007
The Orlando Marlins (10-6-1) were looking forward to their showdown with the defending champion Dr. Phillips Red Sox (12-3). The trash talking, the media hype and the chance to show the Sox they were a force to be reckoned with, had the Fish eyeing this game for weeks.
But when it was all said and done, the Fish were flattened. Flattened by a skeleton crew of sorts.

With a shortage of players, the Sox pulled their ailing lefty Joe Mulvihill off the D.L. (broken foot) to get them to 9. The Marlins on the other hand had a full boat. Great chance for the Fish, right?.... Wrong.
The Sox still had one of their 2 aces on the hill and that was all they needed as the Fish, aside from two bases loaded situations, couldn’t mount an offensive attack.
6 scattered hits and 1 run through 7 innings was all they could come up with and that certainly isn’t going to be enough against a team like the Red Sox.

“We have been struggling offensively and defensively the last few games” said manager Rich Musumeci.
Defensively especially, with 28 errors in the last 6 games, the Marlins can actually consider themselves fortunate to be 2-3-1 in that span.

“It’s an alarming downward trend” said SP Jimmy Groves.

The schedule gets tougher, not easier the rest of the way.
If the Marlins expect to compete in the post season, they’d better tighten up.

This week is extremely hard to find a player who did enough to stand out for the J&J Player of the Game award, but the closest has to be utility player Nelson Rodriguez.
N-Rod hasn’t played baseball in 13 years, yet he sits at the top of the Marlins stats page with the best average AND even more impressive, he has 0 strikeouts in 36 at bats!
The Bronx native took on one of the toughest pitchers in the league this week and managed a hit after a 12 pitch at bat, refusing to go down on strikes.
“He is one tough S.O.B.” said Musumeci.

Surprisingly for a team struggling offensively, only 5 Marlins went down on strikes through 7 innings. Red Sox starter Kevin Gallaher has been averaging 13.5 K’s per 9 innings.

Next up for the O-Town Marlins are the Titans (13-3) on Sunday night and the Astros (12-5) on Monday night.
Taking the hill for the Fish against the Titans will be Darrin Reichle 1-0 1.72 ERA and the Astros will see Crazy Joe Del Valle 4-2 5.35 ERA.

GO FISH!!!

MARLINS TIE, AGAIN...........

May 10, 2007
The Orlando Marlins (10-6-2) have begun their decent into mediocrity. With a record of 2-3-2 over the past 7 games, the team has gone flat at the wrong time. The team's record does not reflect the talent level on this team. Essentially, Three errors keep this team from a 13-5 record!
Errors and a limited amount of timely hits have plagued this team recently, and they will have to win out and probably need a little help to make the post season.

Monday night’s 7-7 tie with the Astros (12-7-1) didn’t help their chances.
Marlin’s starting pitcher Darrin Reichle went the distance and despite not feeling 100%, still managed to pitch well, certainly well enough to win. Nine innings, 2 ER, 11 hits, 1 BB and 5 K’s was the line against the hard hitting Astros.
He also helped his own cause with a 2 run single, all earning him the J&J Builder’s player of the game award.
Other candidates were 1B Josh Montero (2-4, 2 RBI’s), utility Tony Burnham (2-4, RBI, 2 runs scored), and the Astros leftfielder, who kept his team in the game throughout the night catching EVERYTHING hit anywhere near him. (Of course, the award should go to the team that company is sponsoring, so he really didn’t have a shot here, but good game nonetheless!)

This week’s game features a rematch with the Red Sox (13-4), where we’re likely to see another Gallaher/Groves match up.
Marlin’s starter Jimmy Groves will be making his 8th start of the season and will put his 3-2 record and 1.54 ERA on the line against the hard hitting boys from DR. Phillips, who are coming off a loss Tuesday night against the Lakeland Crew (17-1).

We have a lot of guys missing this week, so please let me know if you cannot make it ASAP!

.

SOX COMPLETE MARLIN SWEEP, 8-5......

May 13, 2007
The Orlando Marlins (10-7-2) made it more of a game this time against the Dr. Phillips Red Sox, but the result was no different; 8-5 loss.
Jimmy Groves pitched well against the Sox, but it was by far his most unsuccessful outing all season, as he has been “lights out” consistently and is a strong candidate for team MVP. Groves’s line; 6 innings, 6 runs (4 earned), 12 hits, 3 walks and 3 K’s.
Darrin Reichle came on in relief in the 7th to get some work in and aside from a few hits, shut down the Red Sox offense.

The Fish were a bit better defensively, but once again could not get anything going offensively until a rash of Sox errors in the 7th.

Two standouts for the J&J Builder’s Player of the Game award are Shaun Regan, who got the nod at SS and played a solid game, especially since not having played the position in a while and OF Jose Rosado, who continues to play hurt and come through anyway. Rosado hit the ball well having the best offensive day at 2 for 4. Congrats guys! Nice game!

Playoff chances are fading fast for the 3rd place Orlando Marlins, but they are still mathematically in it!
The team’s second loss to the Red Sox this season on Sunday did nothing to help their chances, but the Lugnut’s recent losses have and if the Yankees end up losing some games, the Marlins can sneak into first if they can take care of their own business.
Of course their business includes games against the Tigers (13-5), division rival Lugnuts (12-8) and (yikes) the league best Lakeland Crew (18-1).

“The team needs to think positively and play ba%#’s to the wall these last few games” said team motivator, Angelo Carlucci. “Anything can happen!”

The Marlins, who are 4-0 this season in doubleheaders, take on the Lugnuts at 3:30pm Sunday and the Tigers at 7pm.

On the hill in game one will be Darrin Reichle 1-0 1.69 ERA and game 2, depending on playoff implications, will be Crazy Joe Del Valle 4-2 5.35 ERA.

MARLINS WIN 2 OF LAST 3, MISS PLAYOFFS......

June 2, 2007
Despite a similar record as last season, the Orlando Marlin’s (12-8-2) mini-slump towards the end of the season cost them a playoff appearance.
After an 8-3 start, the Fish seemed to lose their focus and lost (and tied) some games they probably should have won.
The season wasn’t exactly a major failure, but a bit disappointing following a 2006 team that scratched and clawed their way to the semi-finals, coming within 1 game of the championship series.

Once again, the strength of this team was its pitching staff, which got a real boost with the season team-MVP candidate Jimmy Groves put together.
Darrin Reichle was solid as usual, despite dealing with that mid-season groin injury, and Joe Del Valle was better than his ERA (obviously, with a 0.00 ERA last season) and Robb Cymerman filled in admirably when Reichle went down and was in the top 10 pitchers of the league until the Royals game.

The offense took a bit of a dip from 06, which was expected after losing such big bats as 1B Todd Teeter (relocation), C Drew Stafford and 1B/OF Glenn Reichle (work commitments).
The off-season acquisitions of 1B Josh Montero and rookie free agent utility Nelson Rodriguez proved huge, as Montero took the team’s batting title finishing at .424 while flashing a combination of speed and power leading the team in triples and finishing 2nd in RBI’s and stolen bases.
Rodriguez, battling pain and injuries all year, had a solid campaign and led the team in average for a while until a late season dip. Most impressive was his 1 strikeout in 51 AB’s after being away from the game for the last 13 years. Definitely a force to be reckoned with in the future and the Marlins will welcome him back with open arms (despite being a NY Yankee fan).

Defense seemed to be the team’s Achilles’ heal this year, as untimely errors led to big innings for opposing teams.
“We’ll work on defense during the off season” said team captain, trainer and team event planner Jimmy Groves.

The fall season begins in 3 months, so after a few weeks of rest, we’ll get practices and scrimmages cranked up.
Please let me know your intentions via email or phone call for the fall season, so I can get a head count and know where we stand.

Post game wrap-ups and team leaders below;

MARLINS SPLIT SUNDAY DOUBLEHEADER

By game time last Sunday against the division rival Lugnuts, the Orlando Marlins knew their fate for the 2007 season. The division leading Yankees swept their double header that morning and won the division (at the time), leaving the Marlin’s remaining games meaningless.

Game one, the Marlins sent Darrin Reichle to the mound to take on the Lugnuts.
Reichle, who hasn’t been 100% since his groin injury in March, pitched well in his complete game loss surrendering 3 runs on 12 hits while striking out 8 and walking none.

The Marlin offense could not get anything going aside from a 2 run triple by 1B Josh Montero, tying the game at the time. Montero also ripped a double into right which, the Marlin bench and runners, thought went over the fence.
For his efforts, Montero earned the J&J Builder Player of the game honors for the 3rd time this season.

The Nutters would scrape 1 more run across in the 8th to win 3-2.

Game 2 saw Crazy Joe Del Valle take the hill against the Tigers. Del Valle wasn’t his usual dominant self, as he lasted only 4 innings before having to come out of the game due to leg cramps. 6 runs (3 earned) 7 hits, 3 BB’s and 4 K’s was the line for Del Valle.
Offensively however, his legs weren’t a factor as Del Valle went 2 for 5 including a 2 run walk off bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth, earning him J&J Builder’s Player of the Game award.

Sharing that coveted honor is Nelson Rodriguez, who drove in 3 runs throughout the game, while going 1 for 4.

P/IF Mickey Bono came on in relief for his second outing of the year, and looked real good. Bono was throwing with a lot of velocity and would have been out of the 7th if not for some poorly played balls in the infield that kept the inning alive for the Tigers.
Bono also finished 1 for 1 with 3 runs scored on 3 walks offensively.

MARLINS BEAT CREW FOR FIRST TIME…..

In a meaningless game for both teams, the Marlins (12-8-1) came from behind to defeat the Lakeland Crew (19-3), 6-4.
The Marlins sent the red hot Jimmy Groves into battle against the league’s best and he responded, surrendering 4 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, 1 BB and 2 hit batters, while striking out 5 in 6 innings of work.

The crew jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the top of the 6th, but the Fish responded with 2 in the bottom half, taking advantage of a few walks and a double by Darrin Reichle and 4 more in the 7th. After Mickey Bono took one for the team with one out, 3 straight singles by Joe Del Valle, Reichle and Jose Rosado followed, then a bases loaded ground out to 1st by Josh Montero made it 5-4.
With Steven Tolbert running for Jose Rosado at 3rd, Jimmy Groves took the gutsy 2 out “squeeze” call from 3rd base coach Rich Musumeci and laid down a beauty. The throw to first to get the hustling Groves sailed high and Tolbert scored from 3rd, as the Marlins got that extra insurance run.

Reichle came on to close out the last 2 innings and took the win. The Crew managed some hits against the big righty, but none of them scored.

J&J Builder’s Players of the Game has got to go to our pitchers, Groves and Reichle for holding down that potent lineup.
Nice job boys!

It was a pretty exciting and fun game despite the Fish just playing out the string and the Crew fine tuning for the post-season.

MARLIN IN THE SPOTLIGHT!.......

June 12, 2007
Hey guys! Make sure you tune into The Next Best Thing; Celebrity Impersonators this Wednesday night at 8pm on ABC. You may catch a glimpse of a Fish!

Our very own Glenn Reichle, brother to already famous D-Man, will be doing his best James Bond 007.

The 2006 All-Star 1B/OF has been contemplating a return to the team, possibly as early as this fall so we can bust his chops soon!

The name's Reichle, Glenn Reichle.

Good luck G-Man!

DEL VALLE, BURNHAM HEAD EAST........

June 22, 2007
The Orlando Marlins designated P/IF/C Joe Del Valle and P/Utility Tony Burnham for assignment.
Both were sent to the Marlin's aluminum bat affiliate Rockledge Cubs (2-4) last Sunday.

Del Valle got the nod for the start, and after surrendering a leadoff double, settled in for a solid 6 inning, 3 hit 1 ER win. Burnham came in to pitch the 7th (final) inning in a non-save situation to strike out 2 of the 3 batters he faced, preserving the 6-1 win.
Burnham also saw some time in CF, and both contributed with a hit a piece, with Del Valle driving in a run.

The Cubs were hurting in the pitching department and Burnham and Del Valle wanted the work, so Marlin's owner and GM Rich Musumeci called his "Goombah" and half brother, Ernesto Guliano Bianco (Cubs GM), and they made it happen.

Keep track of your teammates on the Del Valle/Burnham watch link to the left.

Good luck boys!

MARLINS SET TO PULL THE PLUG ON MASCOT "GARY"...............

July 13, 2007
The Orlando Marlins have been talking with the agent of troubled mascot/good luck charm “Gary” about his possible return to the team.

Gary was re-signed immediately after the 2006 spring campaign to a multi-year deal reportedly worth 2.5 million with a $500,000 signing bonus after bringing good luck to the team after his discovery mid-season.
But shortly after, he disappeared without a trace or call.

In late November Gary’s agent, Sid Rosenberg, contacted the team and claimed he and his client were unaware the new contract included fall seasons and that Gary was vacationing in India and unavailable.

Marlin’s brass threatened to void the contract and demanded the full $500K in bonus money back if Gary did not return to the team by the start of the 2007 season.

Unfortunately, the 2007 season began and Gary was nowhere to be found.
He appeared at a ball game mid-season, overweight and obviously under the influence of alcohol and narcotics with a hooker he just picked up on OBT.
Team security escorted him and his “lady friend” off the field and the Marlins demanded he seek help.
“It was a sad scene” said Marlin’s Captain Jimmy Groves. “That dude was lit! I think he could out drink me! That chick was a dog. I hope he gets help.”

Rosenberg has recently contacted the team’s front office claiming Gary is clean and ready to return to the club after his voluntary stay at the Betty Ford clinic.
“He has found Jesus” stated Rosenberg. “I visited him regularly and he looked great. I hope the Marlins will consider his reinstatement to the ball club for the fall season.”

Marlin’s officials have been tight lipped about the situation, except for the assistant to the director of off the field matters, Luigi Cangelosi. “If we were to even consider his return, it would have to be for much less money and he’d have to agree to random alcohol and drug screens.”

More on this story as it develops.

IN OTHER NEWS………
………..Rumors have been running rampant that the Marlins are trying to deal utility player Nelson Rodriguez.
One story had him wearing Yankee pinstripes. Yet another had him in Pirate a uniform.

N-Rod’s agent, Carlos Jose Ricardo Perez Montoya Esposito Leibowitz, said the team has not contacted him or his client and that the rumors are bogus.
Rodriguez, who could not be reached for comment, has been reportedly calling the Marlin’s front office daily, but has not been given any info regarding his status for next season.
“I just let the machine get it when I see his number” said Mildred Cohen, the Marlin’s summer intern receptionist. “I don’t know who he expects to talk to. I’m the only one here for the summer.”

…………Injured utility man, Marlyn Kelch has been coming along nicely in his rehab from shoulder surgery, and is expected to rejoin the team this fall.
“I feel great. I am going to work it out slowly with the softball team and I hope to be ready and 100% by September.”

…………P Joe Del Valle and P/Utility Tony Burnham have been flourishing in their assignment with Rockledge Cubs.
Del Valle is batting .667 with a HR and 3 RBI’s, and Burnham is at a cool .429 with a double. But the real contributions these two have made are on the mound as Del Valle stands at 3-0 1.31 ERA in 3 starts and in 4 relief appearances, Burnham has a save and a 1.91 ERA.
The Cubs are 5-0 since their arrival and now sit at 6-4.
Nice work boys!

Practice has been delayed due to field problem. The problem? We can’t find one.
I’m working on getting a field for next Sunday morning. Will be in touch.

MARLINS LOSE LOPEZ..........

August 11, 2007
The Orlando Marlins lost a big piece of their defense last week when SS Danny Lopez left the state to move back to Chicago.
“Danny had some serious range” said a teammate when notified Lopez had played his last game as a Marlin.
“He was as smooth as they come”.

Lopez was also solid at the plate, although he had a rough spring batting only .230, he rarely struck out and was tied for 5th on the team in RBI’s as the leadoff man.
“Danny had that unexplainable slump of hitting right at people” said manager Rich Musumeci. “It wasn’t like he wasn’t seeing the ball. In actuality, he was seeing it very well! He had some wicked line drives; they just had someone in their paths most of the time.
We knew he could hit after his .583 avg. in the fall of 06.”

The fleet footed shortstop got on base plenty, as he swiped 14 bases, shattering the Marlin’s previous record.

“Our own version of Jose Reyes will be missed” said Musumeci. “We wish him well.”

Luckily this team was blessed with 2 great shortstops, as Shaun Regan is expected to resume his former position immediately.
The Marlins are sad to see Lopez go, but they know Regan can get the job done. Regan was the starting SS on the 06 squad that reached the semi-finals, and the Marlins are confident in his abilities.

IN OTHER NEWS……

……..OF Jose Rosado has officially been sidelined for what looks like the bulk, if not all, of the 07 fall season.
Rosado had complained of abdominal pain on numerous occasions throughout the year, but was told to “suck it up and get back out there” by team doctors.
Rosado’s personal physician Dr. Kevorkian finally diagnosed him with a hernia, and surgery is scheduled for later this month.

“That’s a solid bat we’ll be missing” said team trainer Lou Ferrigno. “Hopefully we’ll get him back in the spring better than ever.”

……..Crazy Joe Del Valle and Bulldog Burnham have been excelling in their stint with the Rockledge Cubs. The Cubs finished the regular season 11-5, going 10-1 since our boys arrival and won their first playoff game 12-7 behind Del Valle’s complete game on the mound and his 3 for 4 effort with 2 doubles and 5 RBI’s, all with a raging head cold!

Del Valle was stifling at times and once his curveball started snapping, it wasn’t even fair. The head cold took its toll on Joe, as he tired by the 7th, but stayed in to get the complete game win. “I felt horrible” said Del Valle. “But I wanted to keep going to save the bullpen for the next game.

Tony Burnham has been rumored as the starter for game 2 Sunday morning.
Good luck boys!

.....Marlin's all-star OF/1B Glenn Reichle has announced he will be rejoining the team this fall. "I am pumped to get back out there and contribute" said Reichle. "I'm rested, fresh and feelin fine!" Reichle is expected to grab the starting LF job left by injured Jose Rosado.

MARLINS SCORE BIG IN DRAFT AND FREE AGENCY.......

August 19, 2007
The Orlando Marlins, not even expecting to draft anyone at today’s tryouts, scored big with their first pick in CF/P Casey Newman.
“Newman played for this organization back in the 18+ NABA years ago when we were the Cardinals, before he moved out of town” said an elated Rich Musumeci, the Marlin’s manager/GM/owner. “I am thrilled to have him back on board. He was clearly one of the top 3 players on the roster back then. He’ll be a much needed boost to the offense and a solid glove in center.”

“I have to give props to Joe Dilullo and the Pirates organization for this one” said Musumeci. The Pirates drafted Newman with the 4th overall pick, and then offered him to the Marlins in exchange for the Marlins pick which was 6th overall, plus a favor to be named later. “I owe Joe one, that’s for sure! The guy we selected for them is no slouch, but I know Newman and we may need a CF if Will Bodie doesn't return this fall. HUGE pick up!
Thanks Joe!”

Retired Marlin Todd Teeter, commenting on the Newman signing from his home in North Carolina via video conferencing, had this to say;
"That guy is a monster! He was a great player and teammate. I wish I was there joining him!"

The Marlins also faired well in the free agency market, snagging 2B Sem Cuevas and rookie free agent OF Moses Betances.
Cuevas will serve as the much needed leadoff man the Marlins need, as he swiped 46 stolen bases for the Orlando Mets since joining them last spring.
“That’s my boy!” exclaimed 1B/Assistant to the director of scouting, Josh Montero. “With Shaun Regan moving back to SS, I figured these guys would be a great tandem.”

Betances will roam the OF, and was signed for his defense and big bat as well. He’s been hampered by migraines the past 2 weeks, but is expected to join the team’s workouts next week.

The Marlin’s losses include Bodie, utility man Doug Elliott, OF/1B Colin Brady and SS Danny Lopez as previously reported.
Elliott expressed his desire to manage his own squad, the Indians, and Brady asked to join him.
It was an amicable split, as Musumeci is assisting his former player however he can. “I was upset at first. You hate to lose a guy like that in your clubhouse, but I know his desire to manage. Once you get the bug, you can’t shake it. I wish him well.”
Brady, who spent the entire spring season on the DL, recovered quicker than expected. “I owe the guy so much playing time” said Musumeci. “I figured he’d get it with the Indians, so we gave him his release. Brady is a great teammate and is welcome back anytime, so hopefully we haven’t seen the last of him in a Marlin uniform.”

IN OTHER NEWS…….

……..SS Shaun Regan has ended his holdout, if you can call it a holdout.
Regan hasn’t missed a practice, but has threatened to not join the team once the season started if his contract wasn’t renegotiated.
Taking advice from Jimmy Groves agent, Scott Boris, Regan told the team he “expected” a “substantial increase” in pay for his move back to SS.
“I reminded him he is in the middle of a 3 year contract with the club” said assistant to the GM Vito Corleone.
“Let’s just say, I made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. We’ll talk money after his 3rd season.”

……..The Orlando MSBL may have a record high 25 teams competing this fall. “It may be closer to 22, but we’ll see who comes up with the money by the deadline” said commissioner Brian Blevins.

REICHLE, GROVES LOOK SHARP IN WIN OVER PATRIOTS. TEAM BBQ INFO!!!......

August 26, 2007
The Orlando Marlins beat the Fledgling Patriots 9-4 today in their first scrimmage game of the 2007 fall season.

The Fish scored early and late to clinch the victory, but were shut down for 5 straight innings in between as Patriot pitchers, including former teammate Scott Borges, held the skeleton Marlin crew in check to keep their team in the game.

With a few Marlins still M.I.A., the Fish brought in IF Jose Arguelles for a look see, and what they saw they liked!
Arguelles hit the ball hard, going 3 for 3 and wasn't too shabby on the defensive side with several put outs, showing off his nice glove work and cannon-like arm.
As opening day gets closer and only 12 Marlins committed monetarily, it will be interesting to see what happens and who is shut out.

Marlin's starting pitcher Darrin Reichle looked sharp in his 2 innings of work, as did MVP candidate Jimmy Groves the following 2.
P Joe Del Valle, fresh off his successful summer run with the Rockledge Cubs, looked a bit weary on the hill in the 5th and 6th. Turns out, Del valle threw late Saturday night in a fast-pitch softball game, so he was obviously not 100%.
Relievers Perry Teague and Steven Tolbert were cut short on their mound work due to time constraints, as the game was stopped after the top half of the 7th.

The Patriots are a real nice bunch of guys from their manager Ron Sousa, on down. We wish them good luck and a successful season.

Possible scrimmage next Sunday, time and location to be announced.

TOP JIMMY TAKES HOME 2007 MVP...........

September 3, 2007
The annual Marlin’s team BBQ this past Saturday was a good time despite the rain limiting the activities planned.
The team took part in some greasy hamburgers, hot dogs and my bride’s awesome macaroni salad, as well as other snacks.

The 2007 season awards were given out before calling it a day.
Taking home the Rookie of the year honors was utility player Nelson Rodriguez. N-Rod excelled in his first year back on the baseball diamond in 13 years, batting .333 good enough for 4th on the team. He also boasts the best strikeout per AB ratio 1:51.
The club is looking for more from this ultimate utility man as he gets even more comfortable with the sport.

Marlins chose 1B Rob Hancock as their best defensive player with the new and coveted, Teal Glove award.
Hancock was not present for the award, but received it before the start of the scrimmage game Sunday morning.
Hancock made some great plays at 1st after returning to the team following his rehab of his broken humerus bone in his throwing arm.

The 2007 Batting Champ or Teal Slugger award was 1B Josh Montero. Montero was brought in to help ease the loss of Todd Teeter and Drew Stafford’s bats. He went on to lead the team in AVG, triples and finished 2nd in doubles SB’s and RBI’s. Definitely a huge pick up, earning Marlin’s general manager Rich Musumeci a nomination for GM of the year!

The Marlins 2007 MVP voting was a landslide, with P/3B Jimmy Groves getting 90% of the votes.
Groves was the team’s workhorse on the mound this season with 58.2 leading the team in strikeouts (49) while finishing with an ERA of 1.99. His W/L record showed nothing of his importance to the team, as he was robbed of 3 wins over the season.
Groves’ value to the team isn’t just measured in numbers. He is the ultimate club house guy and a natural leader.
We’re thrilled to have him as a teammate and hope he remains a Marlin for a long time.

Receiving the hardware after being named the 2006 MVP a year earlier, was P/OF Darrin Reichle. D-Man was clearly the back bone of the team’s success in 2006. He finished with a .352 avg, and led the team in doubles, HR’s and RBI’s.
On the pitching side, he finished 6-2 with a 1.63 ERA in 7 starts and really took command in the post season with a 1.06 ERA and a complete game 3 hit dismantling of the eventual league champion Dr. Phillips Red Sox.

Congratulations guys! You all deserved it! Now let’s get out there and win a championship!

GO FISH!!!!!!

IN OTHER NEWS

………In their final tune up before the regular season, the Orlando Marlins looked strong, topping the Pirates 16-3 in a relaxed game Sunday morning.

Marlin’s starting pitcher Darrin Reichle was in mid season form, working 4 innings surrendering just 2 hits while striking out 5.
Closer Tony Burnham got a couple of innings of work in to build on his summer stint with the Rockledge Cubs, surrendering a hit with 2 K’s. Newcomer Jose Arguelles worked a perfect 7th with a strikeout and lefty Steven Tolbert was a little rusty in the 8th from the lack of work off the mound. T-Bert walked 5 straight batters, as he just missed the strike zone on many of his throws. He collected 2 K’s as well, without surrendering a hit.
“He’s got some good stuff” said manager Rich Musumeci. “I think he just needs some reps whether it is in a game or in the bullpen. I think he’ll be very good.”

Jimmy Groves threw only an inning in the 9th, as he’ll be the opening day starter Thursday night against the Orlando Reds, and was sharp facing only 4 batters.
Crazy Joe Del Valle closed out the game with the equivalent of 2 innings, as some of the Pirates stayed for BP. “Del Valle will be the workhorse out of the bullpen this fall, with an occasional start. He’ll be used all over the field, particularly SS and catcher” said a team spokesperson.

It seems the new additions to the team to help bolster run production will pay dividends, as leadoff hitter 2B Sem Cuevas reached base all 4 times he came to the plate on 2 hits a BB and a ROE. He scored 3 times and recorded 2 stolen bases creating havoc on the base paths.
CF Casey Newman reached base 4 times as well on 2 walks, a single and a double scoring twice and contributing 2 RBI’s
IF Jose Arguelles was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, and Mickey Bono, not so new to the team, had a great day at the plate going 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s, 3 off a bases clearing double in the 1st.
Add these guys to already studly incumbents Joe Del Valle, Glenn Reichle, Darrin Reichle and Josh Montero and it makes for a seriously potent lineup.

Defensively the Marlins looked tight despite having to deal with the loss of SS Shaun Regan who has seemingly quit the team and looks to be sitting out a season.
Joe Del Valle, Mickey Bono and Tony Burnham all looked solid at the position and will all play a part in replacing him.
The Marlins also haven’t given up hope on acquiring the services of former Red SS, Miguel Rodriguez.
Rodriguez finished last fall season .464 with 2 doubles, a triple and 6 RBI’s.
Negotiations are ongoing as Rodriguez vacations in Puerto Rico.

The Fish and their fans are anxious to get the season rolling. They won’t have to wait too much longer, as opening night is this Thursday at 7pm vs. the always tough Orlando Reds.
On the hill as mentioned above, is 2007 MVP Jimmy Groves who’ll be looking to get the Fish off to a quick start.

…….On a sad note, the Orlando Marlins would like to extend their condolences to teammate Steven Tolbert as he lost his dad this past Thursday.
The team mourns with you T-Bert.

If you’d like to help contribute to a floral arrangement or something, contact the team’s email address.

GROVES CRUISES THROUGH 2 HITTER, DEL VALLE HOMERS, AS FISH WIN 12-2...............

September 6, 2007
The Marlins were looking for a good start this fall season. They got it. “It doesn’t get much better than that” said a Marlin’s player leaving the ballpark Thursday night.

Pitching was dominant, defense was stellar and dare we say it, the offense was clicking. After all, that is what plagued the Fish all spring season, lack of run support and key hits.
If Thursday night’s game against the Reds is any indication of how solid this lineup can be, it should be a great fall season.

The Fish struck first on a line drive single to left field off the bat of 2007 spring “Teal Slugger” recipient, Josh Montero followed by a 2 run blast over the leftfield fence by “Crazy” Joe Del Valle, his first in a Marlin’s uniform, which put the good guys up 2-0.
Del Valle’s still swinging the bat like he’s still in Rockledge using aluminum.

Red’s starting pitcher Craig Meyer, settled down and kept the Marlins at bay as his team scratched 2 runs across in the 4th to tie it up. But the Marlin’s bats eventually woke up in the 5th and coupled with a few Red’s errors, the Fish were eventually able to jump ahead 12-2, scoring their final run in the bottom half of the eighth to end the game.

Several Marlins looked sharp including Montero (2 -3), Del Valle (1-3 HR, 2 RBI’s) D.Reichle (2 for 3, 2 2B’s, RBI) and Jimmy Groves (2-3, 2B) who is obviously still feeling the concussion he sustained last week. “I pitch and hit much better with a head injury” claimed Groves. “You should have seen me tear it up in Sweden after I was knocked unconscious in a water balloon fight!”
Another big blow was a bases loaded triple off the bat of 2006 All-Star Glenn Reichle, who has just re-joined the team after his spring hiatus.

Marlin’s hurler Jimmy Groves went the distance, surrendering 2 unearned runs, 2 hits, a HBP and 2 BB’s while, striking out 4, earning him (here we go again) the J&J Builder Player of the Game honors.
Also worthy of consideration is Del Valle with his 2 run blast and some nice defensive plays at short, and Glenn Reichle with his 3 run triple.

Defensively, Mickey Bono and Del Valle handled the SS duties, and both played very well, as did the “Teal Glove” recipient, Rob Hancock over at 1st.

A very nice team win and a great start to the season.
Next test for our heroes will be the Orlando Astros Sunday night at 7pm, fresh off their impressive springtime run.
On the hill for the Fish will be Darrin Reichle making his first start of the fall season.

Will be a tough one, so bring the family and show support!

MARLINS EDGE STROS IN PITCHERS DUEL, 4-1..........

September 9, 2007
It was dubbed a pitchers duel by analysts before these two teams even stepped on the field and that’s exactly what it was.
The Orlando Marlins (2-0) sent 2006 MVP Darrin Reichle to the mound to do battle against the Orlando Astros (0-1) ace, Jason Laub late Sunday night.

Laub got into a little trouble early, after Marlin’s leadoff man Sem Cuevas reached on an error and walking Josh Montero. Cleanup hitter on the night, Jose Arguelles singled to center scoring Cuevas, and then the red hot Mickey Bono singled to load the bases. Darrin Reichle drew a walk for his 3rd RBI on this young season and just like that the Fish were up 2-0.

But Laub had other ideas, as he settled in and retired 11 of the next 13 batters he faced.
The Fish scraped 1 more run across in the 5th to make it 3-0, but the ‘Stros responded with one quickly in the 6th, but that’s all they would be able to muster as the 8’7” Reichle glistened….make that, sweated like a pig through his complete game, 13 strikeout performance. D-Man wasn’t able to take home the J&J Builder Player of the Game award due to his soaking wet hands, so it will be waiting for him next game.
Joe Del Valle, Reichle’s battery mate for the night, called a great game and was solid, not letting much, if anything, by him.

Mickey Bono had another solid game at SS, Perry Teague owned 2B and Casey Newman was perfect in CF, until his hamstring pull in the 6th forced him from the game.
“I think it’ll be fine” said Newman. “Joeito (Jose Arguelles) gave me a nice “rub down”. It was nice, but I pulled the plug on it when he got a little too high on the inner thigh. It really didn’t hurt that far up!”
Feeling violated aside, Newman’s doing well and is expected to start Sunday vs. the Muckdogs.

The newly high powered Marlin’s offense was slowed considerably by Laub, as he is one of the top 10 pitchers in the league, but they were able to take advantage of enough breaks to pull out the win.

Next up for the Marlins, are the Orlando Muckdogs, playing in their inaugural season.
Although the name is new, the players are not. The team should not be taken lightly, as a majority of the roster is the old Mets squad, littered with some solid ball players.

On the mound making his 2nd start will be Jimmy Groves 1-0 0.00 ERA. It’s the last game before the 2 week layoff.

GO FISH!!!

BY THE NUMBERS....

GROVES TOO TOUGH FOR 'DOGS, FISH WIN 9-4.......

September 16, 2007
Many moons ago, from way back in some far away hick town in Virginia, population somewhere around 41, came a young man destined to play baseball.
Instead of a teething ring, he was given a baseball. In place of a pacifier, a batting glove. A Louisville slugger rather than a tricycle (You get the picture).
Before long, the Groves’ family saw their little boy grow into a man and before they knew it, off he went, leaving the small but profitable family tobacco & cranberry farm for a life of rawhide and leather.

All in the name of baseball, his travels have taken him such places as Sweden, Australia, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Canada, and The North Pole (Santa’s all-star Olympic team back in 2003), just to name a few.
Somehow, he ended up here in Central Florida and the Marlins have been reaping the benefits ever since.

Groves has been on fire on the mound, this spring especially. This fall, he has picked up where he left off.
Sunday night, Groves took the hill for his 2nd start of the season against the upstart Muckdogs (0-3).
The Marlins jumped out to a 6 run lead in the 1st, enabling Groves to challenge the opposing team with his large arsenal. His worst enemies this night, humidity and slippery fingers.
Despite the wet conditions, the Marlin’s hurler was able to keep the ‘Dogs in check, surrendering just 1 ER on 5 hits in six innings while striking out 12. His uncharacteristic 6 walks (1 per inning avg.), was the only flaw in the line, and was due to the extremely wet conditions.
“I want D-Man’s K record” Groves was overheard saying.
“He came close, but I ain’t too worried about it” said Darrin Reichle after the game.
Groves once again is the J&J Builder Player of the game, but he’ll have to share it 3 ways this time….

The Marlins were a little sloppy on defense, but considering the conditions, it isn’t really a concern.
The Fish managed 9 runs and 11 hits off Muckdogs starter and former Met, Al Little.
Leading the charge was 2006 All-Star 1B/OF Glenn Reichle, who continues to pound the ball after his 1 year hiatus from the game. 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI’s earned Reichle the Jimmy Gr…err, the J&J Builders Player of the Game award. Also sharing the coveted award and continuing his assault on CFMSBL pitching is 1B Josh Montero.
Montero also helped himself to a double, going 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored, an RBI and 2 stolen bases, as he raised his team leading average to .556.

Miccosukee Indian casino odds maker and Marlin on hiatus, Robb Cymerman had the Fish favored by 10. “These guys never cover!” claimed Cym.
They are 3-0 but 1-2 against the spread.
Lesson here; bet the OPPOSITE of Mr. Cymerman.
(Marlin’s next game’s odds posted soon).

The Fish hit the “bye week” at a bad time, but will try to keep the fire alive for their 3 games in a 1 week stretch, beginning Sunday September 30th when they take on the Orlando Outlaws (0-2), followed by a Thursday night primetime special vs. the Cardinals (2-0) and the hard hitting Orlando Fury (1-0-1), Sunday October 7th.

Tentative starter for September 30th is Jimmy Groves 2-0, 0.64 ERA followed by Crazy Joe Del Valle against the Cards on Thursday making his first start, and 9’10” Darrin Reichle taking on the Fury.

Enjoy the time off Fish heads!

GO FISH!!!!!!!!

ANOTHER NEW FISHIE!!!......

Congratulations go out to Rob Hancock and his family on the birth of his daughter, Olivia Grace, born Thursday 9/13- 7lbs-11oz!
You've been off long enough now lefty, we expect you on the field next game!! :)

INJURY UPDATE.......

September 26, 2007
Injured Marlin Jose Rosado is recovering nicely from his surgery last week. Hoping he heals quickly and gets back on the field soon!
Get well soon Raffy!!!!

MARLIN'S CLOSER TO START SUNDAY.....

September 28, 2006
Marlin's starter Jimmy Groves has been scratched from his scheduled start this Sunday against the Outlaws, due to some slight pain in his shoulder. With reliever/ spot starter Joe Del Valle getting the nod on Thursday and Darrin Reichle going next Sunday, the Marlins will be turning to their closer, Tony "Sandman" Burnham, their own right handed version of Billy Wagner.

Burnham has had success as a starter, so the team isn't exactly going out on a limb.
"I know we have a star studded pitching staff" said Burnham. "I embrace my role as the team's closer, but I welcome the opportunity to start any chance I get!"

Burnham will be backed by a well rested bullpen, as Groves will be available for an inning or two, as will Reichle, Perry Teague, Steven Tolbert and Jose Arguelles.

Go get em, Sandman!!!!

MARLIN EXPRESS OVERCOMES 5-0 DEFICIT, WINS 10-6........

October 1, 2007
After a two week layoff, the Orlando Marlins (4-0) returned to the field Sunday night to take on the hard hitting Orlando Outlaws (1-3).
Before the game began, the team was informed of the situation of one of their fellow teammates, 2007 Rookie of the Year, Nelson Rodriguez. N-Rod was in a car accident earlier in the day with his girlfriend and baby and was taken to the hospital. At the time, there was no word on his condition, but thankfully his baby was ok.
Before taking the field, the team dedicated the game to their fallen teammate and friend.

Tony Burnham, starting for the injured Jimmy Groves, looked sharp early on, retiring the side in the first and surrendering 1 ER in the 2nd. But he got into a little trouble with control in the 3rd, and after walking four batters, was pulled for Darrin Reichle.
The Outlaws managed 3 runs in that inning off of a fielders choice gone awry to add to their 2 they got in the second for a 5-0 lead.
They’d add just one more in the 5th on a nice hit and run and a double by Carlos Santini.
Reichle settled in and took control of the game to give his team a chance to chip away at the lead. 1 ER, 4 hits and 10 K’s in 6 1/3rd was D-Man’s line on the night.

The Fish were finally able to get to the Outlaw’s hard throwing starter Mike Thrash in the 4th, when they scraped across 2 on a couple of walks and a single to center by Groves. In the 5th, 2B Perry Teague would score on a Montero single and Del Valle ripped the 1st of his 2 doubles to score Montero to get the good guys to within one.

After the Outlaws made it 6-4 in the 5th, the flood gates opened in the 6th and the Marlins found themselves leading for the first time on the night, 9-6.
They’d add 1 more on the 8th, but it wasn’t needed as the Fish held on 10-6 to remain undefeated at 4-0.

Stars on the night include Darrin Reichle for shutting down the Outlaw’s high powered offense and battery mate Joe Del Valle, for his 2 for 4, 2 2B 3 RBI night to lead the Marlins offense. Both will receive the coveted J&J Builder’s Player of the Game award.

Also worthy of mention; LF Glenn Reichle’s 3 for 5 night, roping another double and adding an RBI to hold on to the team’s RBI lead and for the defensive play of 1B Rob Hancock and 2B Perry Teague who both had stellar games in the field.
Keep it up guys!

One bad note coming out of Sunday night’s game is CF Casey Newman’s re-injuring of his hamstring. Newman had to be helped off the field in the 4th when he pulled up limping into third base.
Take care of that hammy Newman! We need you back out there!

The road gets tougher for our heroes, as they get set to take on the Central Florida Cardinals (2-0-1) this Thursday at 7pm and the Orlando Fury (1-0-1), bright and early Sunday morning.
On the hill for the Fish on Thursday, making his first start of the fall season will be Crazy Joe Del Valle 0-0 0.00 ERA.

We’re looking pretty lean Thursday night due to some guys out of town and some injuries. Please try and make it out, and let me know if you cannot!

GO FISH!! Keep the train rolling!!!!

MARLIN'S BID FOR UNDEFEATED SEASON NOT IN THE CARDS, LOSE 10-6......

October 5, 2007
Sorry about the tune Mick, I couldn't resist!
The Orlando Marlins (4-1) couldn’t quite overcome some big sticks missing from Thursday night’s lineup when they took on the Central Florida Cardinals (3-0-1).
The Fish were without their #2 (Josh Montero), cleanup hitter (Darrin Reichle) and the very dangerous Jose Arguelles.
They DID have some solid pitchers available, however.

Joe Del Valle got the start after a long rest that apparently did him well. “Crazy Joe, although the numbers certainly don’t reflect it, was dominant and throwing with velocity and movement I haven’t seen from him in a while” said manager Rich Musumeci.
“His curveball was sharp and his fastball was tailing. Unfortunately, the umpire was making ball and strike calls where the pitch ended up, not where they crossed the strike zone” said recent acquisition and starting catcher Miguel Rodriguez. That forced Del Valle to throw balls over the plate to some very strong hitters the Cardinals employ.

Del Valle ended up with the loss, which is unfortunate because he really did pitch well.
Mickey Bono came on in relief and was sharp as well. He too was victimized by the same strike zone, walking 4 in 4 2/3rds, a guy that has impeccable control.
There is no argument or bitterness towards the ump, as the zone was the same for both teams, as evident by the 16 total walks issued.
Bono, aside from surrendering 1 ER, shut down the potent Cardinal lineup, giving the Fish ample opportunity to chip away at the lead.
Mickey also was amazing at SS before taking the mound, making several nice plays. One play had him fielding a ground ball in short centerfield, then turning without looking for Hancock at first, throwing a strike just as the runner reached the bag.
It was a bang-bang play that could have gone either way, but credit to Bono for even making it close.
For his efforts, Bono receives the J&J Builders Player of the Game award, his first.

Also splitting the honor is CF Casey Newman. Newman, who is suffering through a nagging hamstring injury, continues to contribute despite the pain.
Relegated to extra hitter Thursday night, Newman crushed a pitch that sailed over the leftfielder’s head good enough for a double, driving in two runs and cutting the Cards lead to 3 at the time.
“If he was healthy, that might have been an inside the park homerun!” exclaimed Musumeci.
Congrats guys!

Also having solid games were 2B Sem Cuevas (2 for 3, walk, SB), Del Valle (2 for 3, 2B 2 runs RBI and a walk) and 3B Jimmy Groves (2 for 4, 2B).

For the second game in a row, the Fish spotted their opponent 5 runs. Although they were able to tie the game at one point, they weren't able to take the lead and take control of the game.

Today’s showdown with the Fury has been postponed, so the next time we see our heroes will be next Sunday 10/14 when they’ll be taking on the always tough Orlando Titans (0-1-1).
Starting pitcher has not been determined yet, but most likely either Jimmy Groves 2-0 0.64, or Darrin Reichle 2-0 0.57.

IN OTHER NEWS……

…………With the recent rash of injuries, the Marlins officially signed Utility player Miguel Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who carries a solid stick, will be replacing injured Nelson Rodriguez (no relation) on the roster.
It is not known when or if, N-Rod will be returning to the team.

The Fish originally contacted Miguel’s agent before the start of the season to fill the void at SS left by departing Shaun Regan, but the emergence of Mickey Bono at the position made that signing unnecessary.
The Marlins re-opened negotiations with Rodriguez and his agent after N-Rod’s injury and Jose Arguelles’s M.I.A. status. “We needed another body that could get behind the dish, as well as another big bat” said assistant to the GM, Mario Di Gregorio. “We definitely feel we got both with Miggie.”

M-Rod will bounce around the defense, as he can play almost every position.
Welcome aboard Miguel!

………Utility player Nelson Rodriguez was placed on the DL until further notice from medical personnel. N-Rod suffered back and neck injuries in a car accident last weekend.
“I’m disgusted” said a dejected Rodriguez. “I was feeling great physically and was dying to contribute to the team.”
Depending on his status, he may have to wait until 2008 to get back on the field.

MARLINS COME FROM BEHIND AGAIN, WIN 10-5......

October 14, 2007
The Orlando Marlins improved to 5-1 Sunday, after defeating the Titans (0-2-1) behind some stellar pitching, several key hits and a pretty solid defense.
It also helped the Titans were missing several key players, especially pitchers.

The Fish were looking to get the bad taste of defeat that was left in their mouths from the loss to the Cardinals last week. The Titans, who are much better than their record, had other ideas as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead. This was the 3rd straight game the Marlins have spotted the opposing team 5 runs before putting up any of their own.
Fortunately, they won 2 of the 3.
Marlin’s starter Jimmy Groves was not at a 100% due to a “few too many” the night before. “That’s no excuse!” exclaimed Groves. “I’ve been in worse shape in the past and played quite well!”. #%@* you all!
Groves was a victim of a couple of errors and misplayed balls, surrendering 5 runs (3ER) and 7 hits in 4 2/3rds while walking 3 and striking out 5. All in all, not really a terrible outing considering the opposition, as the Titans are one of the top 3 toughest lineups in the league.
Due to a high pitch count and just getting over a shoulder injury, Groves was replaced in the 5th by Darrin Reichle.
All Reichle did was shut the door for the next 4 1/3rd scattering 4 hits and striking out 5. “D-Man was filthy” said a teammate. “D-Man has been filthy all year. MC Hammer’s “Can’t touch this” comes to mind when I watch him in action”.
He also had a little to do with the 10 runs scored by the Fish, going 2 for 4 with 2 2B’s and 2 RBI’s, all earning him J&J Builders Player of the Game honors.

Also sharing that honor (really, the whole team deserves it) is 3B Perry Teague, who played the position like he’s been there all year, flawlessly. Teague also went 2 for 3 with a critical RBI at the time. He also served as the team’s photographer (will post as soon as they arrive). And finally, 2B Sem Cuevas, who had several great plays on the day, one that had him lay out to his left to steal a base hit early in the game and a nifty double play to end a possible Titan Rally in the ninth. Cuevas also laid down a bunt for an infield hit in the 8th.

Other teammates having solid days were; OF Miguel Rodriguez (2-4, RBI, 2 SB’s), C Crazy Joe Del Valle (3-4, 2B, 2 runs scored), SS Mickey Bono (2-4, 2B, RBI), Rob Hancock (1-4, 2B, RBI) and a man who continues to rip the rawhide despite a nagging hammy, Casey Newman (3-3, BB, RBI, 2 runs scored). Overall, the Fish pounded out 19 hits on the day.

Next up for the Marlins Sunday at 3:30pm are the Lakeland Tigers (1-3). Starting pitcher in that one has yet to be announced, but rumor has it Marlin Brass is leaning towards Joe Del Valle 0-1 7.71 ERA. “It really doesn’t matter who starts” said newly acquired pitching coach Leo Mazzone. “We’ll be looking to get everyone some work for the stretch run.”

Great job guys!!!
GO FISH!!!

IN OTHER NEWS.....

.....The Marlins reactivated Nelson Rodriguez from the D.L. Saturday, in time for Sunday's game against the Titans.
N-Rod went 0 for 2 and played solid in right field until feeling a little twinge in his back. He was pulled in the 5th for precautionary measures.

.....Utility player Jose Arguelles was placed on the D.L. The Marlins are hoping he can return soon.

.....1B Josh Montero is currently riding a 12 game hitting streak, dating back to April 22nd. When made aware of the streak, Montero had this to say;
"I'm not too concerned with individual numbers. If it helps the team win, thats great. If I go 0 for the season and we win, I'll be happy."
Of course, management would probably feel otherwise.
Keep it up Tiny!

TIGERS DON'T SHOW TO PARTY, CREW UP NEXT....

October 21, 2007
(Shut up, I know it's a shark, not a Marlin above)

The Orlando Marlin’s (6-1) exciting and, to this point successful run, is about to be tested.
Are they paper champions? Can they take the next step and defeat a proven winner? A team that has not only won the 2006 fall championship, but the 2007 spring title AND the National title in Phoenix 2 years in a row?

The Lakeland Crew (5-0-1) are on fire and will be hosting a Marlin’s team that has played only 1 game in the last 17 days, 24 by game time next week.
Sure they are rested, but maybe too rested?

A light workout today didn’t hurt, focusing on hitting and bullpen sessions, so the whole pitching staff will be available for the game at the beautiful Henley Field 11:00am next Sunday.

Expected starter for the Fish is Darrin Reichle 3-0 0.45, getting another shot at the big guys after being pulled in their spring meeting in Lakeland due to a pulled groin.

The Crew are hot, the Marlins are hungry. Should make for a great competitive game!
Few seats remain so hurry!
We’ll sell you the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge!!!

GUYS, GET YOURSELVES FIRED UP!!! THIS IS THE GAME OF THE SEASON!!

IN OTHER NEWS……

…….Reports from Lakeland Florida have injured and troubled Marlin, Marlyn Kelch, getting arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct early Saturday morning. His accomplice, Marlin’s starting pitcher Jimmy Groves.

The details are still a bit sketchy, but it seems the “party” started early Friday at a local Lakeland golf course where Kelch challenged Groves to a quick 18 holes.
Groves was embarrassed on the course and allegedly demanded a rematch at bowling.
Off to Lakeland Lanes.

Groves unknowingly opened up Pandora’s Box, as Kelch, a 3 time bowling champ, proceeded to “wipe the lanes” with Groves. Lakeland Lanes attendant Gary Johnson, said he’d never seen such a lopsided margin of defeat, or someone get so mad at losing a game of bowling.

Up next, billiards. Groves once again was humiliated.
He then reportedly challenged the rehabbing Kelch to a game of darts.
After being released from Lakeland General with dart holes in his feet, Groves called it a night…. rather, morning and acknowledged his inadequacies.
Kelch however, would not leave the Groves property and was escorted to the Lakeland pokey to sober up.
Neighbors reported hearing expletives being shouted out from an inebriated Kelch after 4:40am Saturday moring.
“It was the worst language I have ever heard” said elderly neighbor, Maude Freidlich. “Come on back out here you son of a _____!!” I’ll beat your ____ at anything you red neck”! Kelch was reportedly heard saying.

Marlin’s P.R. Dept. refuses to comment until they hear all the details.

More on this story as it develops.

……..OF Jose Rosado was activated late Saturday from the D.L. for today’s game.
“I feel pretty good!” said a jovial Rosado.
“Now with another week to rest, I should be 100%”.
The Marlins were not expecting Rosado back this fall, but they couldn’t be happier he is.

Welcome back Raffy!!!!

FISH GET 'EM ON, BUT CAN'T GET 'EM IN....

The O-Town Marlins (6-2) traveled out to Lakeland to take on the Crew (7-0-1) Sunday morning, and after a field change and waiting for umpires that would never show, the game got started almost an hour late.
The two squads agreed to call their own game and it worked out pretty well.

The Fish sent Darrin Reichle to the mound and he pitched well enough to win, going 7 innings surrendering 5 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits while walking none and adding 7 strikeouts for a league leading 35.
The problem was run production, as Crew pitchers kept the Marlins from scoring on several occasions.
The Fish out hit the Crew 9-8, but they couldn’t get them in bunches. “Untimely hitting” said 1B Josh Montero. “We had a great lineup today, especially with Joeito back in the fold. We just couldn’t get it done.”

Defensively the Fish held their own aside from 2 throwing errors. “You cannot make mistakes with these guys” said manager Rich Musumeci. “They’ll kill you every time.”
Not too much to crow about for the Marlins this game, but the defensive play of CF Casey Newman. Newman made several nice plays, including a diving catch on a line drive off the bat of Corey Huston. For his efforts and still not 100% with his hamstring, Newman gets the J&J Builders Player of the Game award.
He immediately traded the hardware in for 35 chicken wings and a slice of Key lime pie at Hooters. Nice game Newman!

Newman's fellow outfielders, LF Miguel Rodriguez and RF Steven Tolbert also made some nice catches.

The Marlins still enjoy a slight lead over the 2nd place Lugnuts, but they have a bit of a tough run coming up with the Fury (2-0-2) on Tuesday night, The expansion, but solid Indians (3-2) Sunday and the high flying Dodgers (6-1-1) after that.

Starting pitcher for the Fish Tuesday night will be Jimmy Groves 2-0 1.93, as he looks to get the Fish back on track.

GO FISH!!!!

TRIBE UP NEXT FOR FIRST PLACE MARLINS......

November 1, 2007
With Central Florida weather looking promising for the upcoming weekend, it looks like the CFMSBL may have their full slate of games played.

Kicking things off Sunday morning will be the Orlando Marlins (6-2) taking on some of their former teammates and the Orlando Indians (3-2).
The Fish started the season off hot, but have cooled a bit with losses to the Cardinals and Crew, two of the last four games.

The Indians, led by former Marlin Doug Elliott, have surprised some teams and the league, which is what they set out to do. They have had their share of rainouts, which has prohibited them from keeping their momentum going.
They’ll be looking to knock the Division leading Marlins down a peg with their scrappy lineup, improving pitching staff and a defense that’s starting to gel.
This team is not to be taken lightly. It is only 5 games old, but it’s got some bite and they are more than primed for an upset. A win against our heroes and the Tribe is right in the thick of the division race.

Should be a wild one Sunday morning, so grab your coffee, leave your newspaper for later and head on down to the ballpark for some exciting post Halloween, pre- Thanksgiving baseball!
(There aren’t many places in the country where you can say that!)

Getting the nod for the Marlins will be “Crazy” Joe Del Valle 0-1 7.71, with almost everyone on the pitching staff getting work afterward.

Hit the cages boys!!!

GO FISH!!

TRIBE STUNS MARLINS, 1-0......

November 4, 2007
There were a lot of runs being scored Sunday morning at the Jones H.S. complex. Unfortunately for the Orlando Marlins (6-3), they were on the other field.
For the second straight week the Marlins were shut out, this time at the hands of the Orlando Indians (4-2), who they now share in a three way tie for first along with the Lugnuts (4-2).

The Marlin offense continues to struggle as they have not scored a run in the last 19 innings, going back to the Titan game.
“We had some base runners early on in the game” said Marlins hitting coach Howard Johnson. “We just couldn’t capitalize when we needed to."
A Lot of credit has to go out to Indians ace, Mike McGurk. The hard throwing righty was given a 1-0 lead and he made it stick, striking out 11 Marlins and pitching out of 2 bases loaded jams en route to a complete game shut out.

On the Flip side, Marlin’s starter Joe Del Valle pitched a gem as well, surrendering just 1 ER in 6 innings. Del Valle was sharp again, but unfortunately was a victim of no run support. “Joe’s pitch count was low and he had great command of his pitches” said pitching coach Leo Mazzone.
Darrin Reichle came on in relief for the final 2 innings and kept the Tribe at bay.

Defensively, the Marlins were flawless. No errors and some great standout defensive play from SS Mickey Bono, first basemen Rob Hancock and Josh Montero and leading the way, C Jose Arguelles. Arguelles was a force behind the dish, gunning down 3 runners while calling a great game.
He also stood out with the stick as well, going 2 for 3 and reaching on an error, earning him the J&J Builder’s Player of the Game award.
Starting pitcher Joe Del Valle will share the honor for his performance on the mound, keeping his team in the game and within striking distance.

Great effort out there today guys, but we now need to regroup and win out. We’ve created a log-jam at the top of our division as 4 teams are very much alive and eyeing up the Jim Krall fall title.

It doesn’t get easier for the Marlins as they square off against the Orlando Dodgers (6-2-1) next Sunday morning. Taking the hill for the Fish will be Darrin Reichle 3-1 1.24 as he tries to put his team back in the win column.

Good luck to Jimmy Groves in the MSBL Fall Classic in St Pete this week. Groves is expected to start Wednesday night.
STAY HEALTHY JIMMY!!!

GO FISH!

REICHLE, MARLINS CRUISE TO 12-0 VICTORY.....

November 11, 2007
The Orlando Marlins were involved in a shutout for the 3rd consecutive game, this time, on the winning side.
Behind a lights out performance from the 2 time all star and future Hall of Famer Darrin Reichle, the Marlins snapped a two game losing streak and kept in contention for the Jim Krall division title, improving to 7-3 with a 12-0 win over the much improved Orlando Dodgers (7-3-1)

It didn’t look promising early on however, as the Fish continued to squander scoring opportunities, with the worst of it coming in the top of the 4th, when long time Dodger SS Lawrence Butcher, caught a low line drive off CF Casey Newman’s bat, stepped on 2nd to double off 3B Joe Del Valle then tossing to first to complete the triple play, getting C Joeito Arguelles. “The funny thing is, Butcher could have kept running to first and made it an improbable unassisted triple play” said Marlins skipper Rich Musumeci.
“I said, guys, THAT is rock bottom. There is nowhere else to go but up now.”

“Up” began just 2 innings later when the Fish snapped their 24 inning run scoring draught, with 2B Sem Cuevas drawing a one out walk and a double by 1B Josh Montero then 3 straight RBI singles from Del Valle, Arguelles and Newman. 3-0 Marlins.

In the 7th, the Marlins kicked things off on a leadoff single by D-Man, a Rob Hancock walk and a sacrifice bunt attempt, turned infield hit by IF Perry Teague. Bases loaded no out. The Fish would score 5 runs in the inning on 3 RBI singles and a sac fly by Del Valle.

The run hungry Fish tacked on 4 more in the 8th to put the game away, 2 off the bat of Teague for a 2 run triple hit into deep left center.

Once again, the Fish were sound defensively, save one harmless throwing error in the 3rd.
It was an easy day for the defense, as they didn’t have too many plays to make with their starting pitcher cruising through 8 innings of 2 hit shut out ball, picking up 11 K’s along the way.
Reichle flirted with a no hitter, until a 2 out single in the 6th broke Marlin’s fans and Reichle’s agent’s hearts.
Reichle is eligible for free agency after the season, but has made no mention he’d trade his Marlin uniform in for any other. Reichle’s agent denies any rumor he’ll be testing the free agent market, but does expect his client to be rewarded with a juicy multi-year deal.

For his outstanding efforts, D-Man is the J&J Builder’s Player of the Game.
Offensively, it was a team effort but worthy of mention for consideration is 1B Josh Montero (3 for 4, 2B, 2 runs scored, RBI and 2 SB’s and a couple of nifty plays at first), IF Perry Teague (2 for 4, 3B, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s and a solid game defensively), C Jose Arguelles (2 for 3, BB, 2 RBI’s) and Crazy Joe Del Valle (1 for 3, run scored, sac fly, 2 RBI’s).

With the season winding down, the Marlins will try to win out their remaining 2 games and hope things fall their way to take the division crown and move on to the post season.
They will try to get another winning streak going this Wednesday at 7pm. as they take on the West Volusia Mariners (3-5) at Bennett Rd. field in Orange City.
Taking the hill for the Fish will be home town hero, Joe Del Valle 0-2, 4.22.

LET’S GO BOYS!!!!

FISH FINISH STRONG, AWAIT HELP FOR PLAYOFF SPOT......

November 16, 2007
Finish strong and hope for the best. That’s all the Marlins (8-3) could do to hope to make a post season appearance.
After being shut down for two straight games against the Crew and Indians, the Marlin’s offense bounced back, scoring 12 runs against the Dodgers last week and most recently 11 in 7 innings against the Mariners.

Crazy Joe Del Valle took the mound Thursday in his home county and pitched his team to victory.
Del Valle, who’s been pitching very well, had something extra going for him this night….runs.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Fish thought it was going to be another one of those nights, until the 4th inning when RF Darrin Reichle roped a leadoff single into left field and CF Casey Newman followed with a line drive 2 run homer over the left field wall to tie the game.

The fifth inning saw the good guys start to pull away, beginning with back-to-back doubles by 2007 rookie of the year Nelson Rodriguez and long time utility player Perry Teague (a.k.a. Joe Cool) and a Sem Cuevas walk. With 2 out, SS Mickey Bono ripped a hard single into right scoring Teague and Cuevas who stole 2nd on the previous pitch.
The “two out lightening” magic continued as Del Valle helped his cause belting a double off the centerfield wall that came within 2 feet of going over. Marlins fall season RBI leader Darrin Reichle followed with a 2 run single to make it a five run 5th.

The “hot again” Marlin’s offense, added one more in the 6th and three in the 7th for an 11-2 lead, before the field monitor called the game at 9:20pm, presumably because of a Sanford and Son marathon that was set to begin on Nick at Night at 10pm.

“I drove 3 ½ hours each way and spent $75 in gas to play for a little over 2 hours. Thanks Volusia county parks and recreation!” said an aggravated and Flu stricken Jimmy Groves.

Aside from a couple of errors in the first that led to 2 runs, the Marlins defense was sharp.
C Jose Arguelles was a terror behind the dish once again gunning down a couple of would-be base stealers and Mickey Bono showed Marlins management, as he has all season, why he is the SS of the present AND the future.

Pitching once again was the Marlin’s strength this season as evident in the team ERA of 1.78.
Del Valle went 6 innings surrendering 6 hits and 4 walks while fanning 8. “Joe’s curveball was a thing of beauty tonight” said Arguelles.
Perry Teague pitched the final inning and retired 3 of the 4 batters he faced.

Both Joe’s, “Crazy Joe” and “Joe Cool” will share in the J&J Builders Player of the Game honors. Crazy Joe for his obvious dominance on the mound and Joe Cool for his assault on any baseballs thrown his way as he turned in a great night offensively (3 for 3, 2B run scored, RBI).
GREAT job guys!

“Perry hasn’t just been getting hits. He’s been crushing the ball these past couple of games!” said manager Rich Musumeci. “He opened some eyes tonight, especially mine!”
There’s never been any question about his defense or pitching. Now he’s got to be looked at as a force at the plate as well.
“Sometimes with such a talented and deep offense, guys can get lost in the mix. Perry reminded us these past couple of games that he belongs in the lineup as much as the next guy.

Other impressive performances include; Casey Newman (1-2, HR, 2 RBI’s 2 BB’s), Darrin Reichle (2-3, 2 RBI’s), Glenn Reichle (2-4, RBI), Mickey Bono (1-2, 2 RBI’s, 2 BB’s) and Nelson Rodriguez (2-3, 2 runs)

While the Fish savor their latest victory and strong 8-3 record, they will be watching the scoreboards and hoping for a chance to get in a few more games before shutting it down for the holidays.

“We’re not ready to pack it in yet” said 1B Josh Montero. “We all want to keep playing as long as we can! We got stuck in a tough division and need some help to get in.”
The biggest hurdle came late Thursday night, when the Astros took down the Indians (7-4) to put the Fish in 3rd place (Thanks John! Enjoy the round of Golf, courtesy of the Marlins!)
The Teal & Black in all probability, will be playing Tuesday November 27th.

MARLINS TO FACE HARD HITTING TITANS IN QUARTERFINALS.....

November 20, 2007
No one said the post-season was going to be easy. The Wild Card Marlins will take on the Tim Marsh Division champion, Orlando Titans Tuesday November 27th at 7pm. Jones H.S. Field 1.

The Titans employ a vicious and deep lineup that will test the pitching strong Marlins. The series record is 3-3 between these two teams, with the Marlins grabbing the most recent victory this fall.

"The Titans are always a pleasure to play" said one Marlin. "A very classy ballclub."

Classy and very dangerous. With a team batting average of .348, the Titans can score in bunches. From such big sticks as the Matoska brothers, Matt Jantomaso, Mike Sawyer, and Tony LaJoe to Al Brenner, Ed Rubiera and ex-pros Dennis Rasmussen and SS Rico Rossy, the game can get out of hand in a hurry.

The Fish will counter with a stud of their own in 8'11" right hander Darrin Reichle. Reichle finished the 07 fall season 4-1 with a 0.97 ERA and will try to advance his team to the semi-finals for a date with the undefeated Patriots who are waiting in the wings.

Come on down and support your Teal & Black as they try to bring home a championship!

MARLINS ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS WITH WIN OVER TITANS.....

RECAP WEDNESDAY.....
Marlin’s Jimmy Groves locked himself in teammate’s home and refuses to leave. This photo, taken from a video surveillance system installed in the home, shows the fragile state Mr. Groves is in.

Two days of rain in the last 2 weeks. Both on scheduled baseball days!
The Marlins (9-3) will have to wait until Sunday morning to see if they can knock off the undefeated Patriots (10-0), with the winner advancing to the championship immediately at 1:30pm.
The rains Thursday night were just too much for the state of the art facility at Jones H.S, to handle.
“I was ready tonight!” said Groves. “This sucks!”

Marlin’s starting pitcher Jimmy Groves, pictured above, was so disappointed his team was rained out, he barricaded himself in a spare bedroom at the Montero mansion, curled up in a fetal position and refuses to leave until game time Sunday morning.
Can you fit some lunch meat under the door Josh?

The two squads are pretty evenly matched, as both employ better than average pitching staffs, solid offenses, strong defenses and brilliant managers…..alright, I went too far.
Should be a great match up and a great day!

IN OTHER NEWS....

.....The Marlins will be without the services of OF Jose Rosado for the remainder of the postseason.
"Raffy is experiencing some pain and discomfort in his surgically repaired abdomen" said team doctor Giancarlo D'Giacomo.
"We shut him down so he doesn't do any more damage to the area. We believe he'll be fine by spring."

MARLINS, PATRIOTS TO SQUARE OFF SUNDAY....

MARLINS FALL 2007 CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!

“They let the cucarachas slip through the cracks, and we took the whole thing!”
The line of the post-season, credited to Marlin’s C Jose Arguelles.
The cucarachas (or cockroaches for us gringos) he’s referring to are none other than his own Orlando Marlins Wild Card squad.

At 8-3, the Marlins squeaked in as the 6th and final seed of the fall playoffs and ran the table!
“All we needed was the shot and we got it!” exclaimed Marlin’s bruiser and 1B Josh Montero. “It feels great!”

GAME ONE….

First up, they had to face the daunting task of taking on a heavy hitting Titans squad who won their division by beating teams with their potent offense.
Thankfully for the Marlins, they ran out of gas and the Fish cruised to a 20-5 victory in a constant rain last Tuesday night.

Starter Darrin Reichle was pulled after the 5th with a 17 run lead after surrendering just 1 ER on 5 hits 2 BB’s while striking out 5. “I figured if we were lucky enough to get past the Patriots, we can throw him back out there on Sunday for the championship” said Manager Rich Musumeci (more on that later).

The Marlins offense exploded for 9 runs in the 2nd after falling behind 1-0 and continued to barrage the Titans until the 7th and final inning en route to a 20-5 victory.
“I don’t know who that team in orange was, but it certainly wasn’t the Titans!” said a shocked Marlin. "Our teams usually battle to the end in close games. I think they were just flat out exhausted from the marathon end of season after the long rain break we had. I’m sure they’ll make us pay for this one next year!”

The Marlins had so many contributors in that game it was difficult to hand out the J&J Builders Player of the Game award to 1 or 2 guys, so for the first time ever, it was given out team wide.
With that offensive output, the Marlins broke a team record of runs scored (previously 17) and tied runs scored in an inning (9).

GAME TWO…….

Thursday’s game against the undefeated 10-0 Patriots (not the New England variety) was rained out, which meant a doubleheader for the winner on Sunday.

The Marlins sent the well rested, but heavier from his Thanksgiving vacation back home on the farm, Jimmy Groves to the mound. Groves, armed with his arsenal, back fat and game face, proceeded to mow down the potent Patriot lineup. Groves was filthy, surrendering just 1 ER on 7 hits and 3 BB’s while striking out 7 for a complete game 141 pitch effort, earning him the J&J Builders Player of the Game honors.
While he was busy tearing through the Nat Haber division champion lineup, his offense continued to rip the rawhide, collecting 21 hits (Marlin record) and 15 runs, assuring his team a date with either the Crew or the Fury later that day Final, 15-1.

GAME THREE……

While that game was going on, the Fury stunned everyone by knocking off the heavily favored and defending champion Lakeland Crew, 4-0 so the Fish knew it wasn’t going to be a rout.

It would be the first time these two teams locked up. The Marlins saving Reichle for the championship paid dividends as he took it up a notch and carried the club on his back.
After falling behind 2-0 on a couple of misplayed balls, the Fish got themselves together at the top of the 8th to regroup. 3 straight singles would follow courtesy of the bottom of the lineup. Nelson and Miguel Rodriguez with 1 a piece, followed by a Perry Teague shot to right loaded up the bases. Leadoff hitter Sem Cuevas hit a rocket to short that was too hot to handle, 1 run in, everyone safe.
The spring season’s Teal Slugger award recipient Josh Montero, smashed a grounder to the 2nd baseman for a fielder’s choice getting Cuevas at 2nd, but was too quick to be doubled off as the throw sailed away from first allowing the 3rd and final run to cross the plate.

Reichle dug down deep knowing he’d have the next 5-6 weeks to rest and retired the next six batters he faced, four on strikeouts, for a total of 13 on the day.

The Marlins offense, which used to be it’s only weakness, has finally come into its own and now gives opposing teams fits to go along with the Fishes lights out pitching staff and much improved defense.

The additions of speedster Sem Cuevas, Jose Arguelles, Miguel Rodriguez, Casey Newman and return of all star Glenn Reichle, have given this squad a boost it needed to win a fall title and a realistic shot at the coveted spring championship next season.

As good as this offense is and as much as it has supported this team, no one can lose sight of how much this pitching staff means to this team, particularly its two starters, Darrin Reichle and Jimmy Groves.
Not unlike the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks World Series champs, this Marlins team has co-MVPs for obvious reasons. Reichle and Groves, congratulations and thank you!

The 2007 Orlando Marlins pulled out the improbable run to the championship, not even thinking they’d get a shot just a little more than a week before. A crack was all they needed.
“All hail the Cucarachas!”

GO FISH!!!!!!!!!!!

More to come…………

MARLINS ENJOY SHORT OFF SEASON AS CHAMPS, BACK TO WORK FOR SPRING 2008!......

Well, it was fun while it lasted, but now the Marlins must go back to work and prepare for the upcoming spring season.
“We celebrated, we partied, but now its time to look ahead” said P/3B Jimmy Groves, on his team’s fall championship. “We don’t have a lot of time, so every practice and scrimmage is crucial.”

The CFMSBL will be attempting to start the season a little earlier this year, in hopes of dodging some rain drops come late spring.
League officials want to get the season going as early as possible in order to assure every team gets their full schedule of 24 games in.
“That’s usually the plan every season, but the moneys are just too slow coming in” said one MSBL spokesperson. "Fields have to be secured and paid for. Balls have to be ordered, umpires reserved, it’s a whole process.”

The Marlins will be doing their best to get ready with a possible last minute practice this weekend and a possible road practice to Melbourne to work out with former NFL great Doug Flutie and his tournament squad next weekend.
Marlin’s starting pitchers Darrin Reichle and Joe Del Valle along with catcher Jose Arguelles will be joining the Natick Knights in the Disney Classic 35+ wood bat division tourney beginning January 17th at Walt Disney World.

Come on out and show support! It should be a great tourney!

Before all the new season hoopla begins, let’s take one more look back at the magical fall season…well, at least the stats anyway.

The postseason was such a team success. Everyone contributed in some way.
Some standouts include:

CF Casey Newman, who batted .636 with 3 RBI’s. Newman really started to shake off the rust towards the end of the fall season after not playing for 6 years and excelled when it really counted. Defensively he was perfect as expected. The Marlins were extremely lucky and happy to have him back after his long hiatus.

C Jose Arguelles batted .333 with a team leading 2 doubles and 4 RBI’s while doing his impression of a young Benito Santiago behind the dish. All Star quality right there!

1B Josh Montero, who owned 5 of the 10 offensive categories for the fall season, finished the playoffs at .600 with 3 RBI’s and 3 SB’s (Montero needs just 4 more swipes for the all-time team lead). With his combined power, size and speed, he clearly has earned the nick name “Freak”.

3B Joe Del Valle finished at .333, a low number for him, but he drove in 4 RBI’s, tied with Arguelles for the team lead, and played an outstanding 3B especially in the championship game.

Mickey Bono was a stud at short after moving over from 3rd base to fill the teams void. "I can play short" he told management. So they gave him a shot and it seems he wasn't kidding. Bono owns that position, and Marlin brass would like to see him on the hill more frequently as well.
Offensively, Bono finished at .345 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI's and a very patient 8 walks, while providing the Marlins with some more "pop" from the left side of the plate. Bono flirted with several HR's during the season, he is way over due! His numbers in the playoffs, .364 with a triple and 3 RBI's. Not too shabby! Looking for big things as he gets more comfortable!

Speedster 2B Sem Cuevas may not have had as high of an average in the regular season as he’d hoped, but he thrived in the postseason batting .538 in the leadoff spot with a double and 3 RBI’s. A mainstay in that spot for a long time to come.

Also worthy of mention is IF Perry Teague who continued his late season surge into the playoffs finishing at .500 and the Rodriguez boys, Nelson and Miggie, who also saw success in the pressure laden playoffs.

On the pitching side, it was the Groves and Reichle show. With a combined 2 ER in 23 innings, and 25 strikeouts for a 0.78 ERA, there’s no question why they were co-MVP’s!

Congrats again guys, great run.
From D-Man's first pitch in game one, to T-Bert's final catch in game three, it was a blast!
Let’s try and repeat for the Spring!!!!!

GO FISH!!!!
