HOME TOWN MARLINS ASSIST NATICK WITH LAST MINUTE INJURY REPLACEMENTS......

January 18, 2009
Orlando Marlins Rich Musumeci and Robb Cymerman, provided late roster additions for the Natick Knights as injury replacements at the 2009 Disney Classic, but it wasn't enough as the Knights fell short of their goal of making the finals, winning only one game.

The Knights played tough in their two losses vs. The Rhode Island Riptide and Jacksonville Vikings, losing 9-5 and 6-3. Plenty of runners reached base in these games, but driving them home seemed to be a problem.

Game three found the visitors from the north trailing the CFMSBL Commissioner led Orlando Reds 7-1, after the 2008 CFMSBL ERA leader Robb Cymerman was pulled for his ineffectiveness.
Enter former Heisman Trophy winner and All-Pro Quarterback Doug Flutie who shut the door on the Redsies for the last 6 innings, allowing his Knights to chip away at the lead.
With 2 out and a man on 2nd in the 8th inning, down 7-6, Flutie made some magic with his legs too, (yes the 46 year old can still move at quite a clip!) as he chugged out a ground ball towards the middle of the infield. Local hero and SS Jim Matoska made a great stop diving to his left, then had to jump to his feet to try and get the speedy Flutie barreling towards first.
The ball got away from the first baseman, allowing the tying run to cross the plate giving the Knights a chance to pull off the come back.

Two pitches later with brother Bill at the plate, Flutie took off for second. The throw from the catcher sailed into center, catching the Reds center fielder "napping" playing too deep to back up the throw. Flutie instantly jumped to his feet and ran towards and past third en route to the plate without hesitation, beating the throw home by a millisecond,
having to be helped up after scoring the eventual game winning run in such dramatic fashion.
"It was typical play maker Flutie out there today!" said Orlando Marlin- Knight-for-the-day Rich Musumeci. "It was a blast and a pleasure to be on the same field with one of my 2 favorite QB's and to watch his competitive fire win the ball game! Once in a lifetime deal right there!!!"

It doesn't matter what the sport or his age, bad back and all, he took the team on his back for a hell of a ride!
As a rabid Miami Dolphin fan, I can't help but wonder how far Doug could have taken the early to mid 2000's Dolphin squad as their starting QB, instead of Jay "I-can't-throw-accurately-past-10 yards" Fielder! (yeah thats right Robb, I said it!)
Thanks to Doug, Bill, Paul and the boys for a great time!

Prayers go out to brother Steve Harney who couldn't make the trip out from New Mexico. Get well soon buddy, God Bless you, we're praying for ya!

The Marlins 2009 spring season will be starting soon, so check back for practice and game schedules!

MARLINS LIMP INTO SEASON.......

February 15, 2009

It’s here! That great time of year when the smell of new leather, fresh cut grass and pine tar fill the air. A time for new beginnings and optimism. It’s the CFMSBL Opening day!

The Orlando Marlins begin their campaign Sunday (2/22) evening at 7pm versus a much improved Braves squad. With only a poorly attended practice and a scrimmage loss to the 18+ Reds under their belts, the Marlins must try to gel quickly to have a successful season.

It will be a challenge however, with the thinnest pitching staff since their inaugural year in 2005.
With Darrin Reichle extending his hiatus through the spring, Joe Del Valle coming off a serious shoulder injury and now a back injury to Robb Cymerman which landed him on the DL, the Marlins are concerned and rightfully so.

Marlin’s good guy turned bad boy Robb Cymerman, claims he’ll be back on the field in 2 weeks, but if you saw him just yesterday, you’d say that’s impossible. The 36 year old veteran can barely walk and cannot stand upright. Wearing nothing but a Tommy Hilfiger robe and sporting a cane borrowed from an elderly neighbor, the 2008 CFMSBL ERA leader looks like his 15 day D.L. status will be extended.

How’d he injure his back you ask?
While getting ready for is day job Thursday morning, Cymerman bent over to pick up a child’s shoe (YES a child’s 3 oz shoe!) and felt a “pop” in his lower back.
He was rushed to a local Chiropractor, where a verbal war between medical professionals ensued. Cymerman, a Physician’s Assistant by trade, exchanged……umm....…pleasantries with the back cracker.
Latest reports had Cymerman refusing treatment because he didn’t agree with the protocol.
This latest rage episode wasn’t nearly as severe as the “airport fiasco”, but it was enough for local reporters and news crews to gather outside the verbally battered Chiropractor’s office.
Cymerman, escorted by his entourage (his wife and a 60 year old Puerto Rican couple), did not comment on the situation as he was lifted into his vehicle and taken home.

When teammates heard of Cymerman’s latest episode, they suggested his nick name be changed from “The Slinging Jew” to the “The Raging Rabbi”.
Cymerman denied comment.

The opening day starter has not been determined as of yet, but it will be a pitch-by-committee deal the Marlins usually employ the first few games of a season.

IN OTHER NEWS…….

……...The Marlins were actively shopping for another outfielder after the injury to OF Steven Tolbert. T-Bert is suffering from an unknown injury to his throwing shoulder, leaving him only able to swing a bat.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with my shoulder” said a dejected Tolbert. “I’m hoping to be back at some point this season.”

………….Aside from Cymerman, others beginning the season on the DL are OF Rich Musumeci (shoulder) and C/3B Paul Lavoie (ankle).
It is unclear when either will be able to return to the lineup.

MARLINS NAME OPENING DAY STARTER, SIGN OUTFIELDER........

February 20, 2009

The Orlando Marlins, just days from the season opener, named Joe Del Valle their opening day starter and signed a desperately needed outfielder in rookie phenom, Stephen Tearpock.

After debating and conferring with the team's medical staff for weeks, the Fish decided to go with the 41 year old veteran due to his rigorous offseason workout program.
"Joe's been hittin' it hard these last few months" said team trainer Rocco Cuccinelli. "He looks and feels great and deserves the nod. His booty is rock hard and he's lost a ton of weight on his meatless diet."
Man crush aside, Cuccinelli feels Del Valle has come a long way in his rehab and should do well against the confident Braves.

The Fish also bolstered their lineup a bit while filling their need for another strong armed oufielder with the signing of rookie free agent, Stephen Tearpock. T-Pock was discovered when his 18+ Reds took on the Marlins in a scrimmage a couple of weeks ago. All he did was go 2 for 3 with a HR, 1B and 2 runs scored and played a solid centerfield, prompting the Marlins to inquire about the 28 year old's status.

After some short negotiations, T-Pock signed on the dotted line and is set to join the lineup opening day.

Come on out and catch your Marlins in action Sunday night at 7pm!
GO FISH!!

MARLINS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER, LOSE HOWELL......

March 6, 2009
If you are one to be amused by errors in a baseball game, you would have died laughing in the Reds-Marlins match up Sunday afternoon, as both teams combined for 10 mishaps.
The Reds jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Reds let the Fish back in it with the help of a couple of errors in the 5th when the Fish put up 7 to go ahead 8-3. But the Marlins returned the favor in the 7th, allowing the Reds to tie it up, 8-8.
The Marlins came back with 3 in the bottom of the 7th to hold on for a 11-9 victory.
Starter Joe Del Valle lasted 7 innings, getting the win while surrendering 8 runs (5 earned) on 13 hits, 3 walks and striking out 8.
Marlin’s official closer Mickey Bono came on in relief to earn his first save of this young season, striking out 4 in two innings.
J&J Builder’s player of the game goes to OF Jose Rosado whose bases clearing double was the difference in the game. Rosado finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s and a runs scored.

The second game of the twin bill saw two of the best hurlers in the CFMSBL lock up in a classic pitcher’s duel. #00 Jay Laub for the Astros vs. #44 Jimmy Groves for the Marlins locked horns in a brutally cold and windy evening (stop snickering you northerners! 45 degrees is friggin cold down here!)
It would take the full 9 innings to decide this one, as neither team crossed the plate until the 8th inning, when Astros starter Jay Laub singled in a run to help his own cause and put his team up, 1-0. But the Fish caught a break and managed to push 4 runs home on five straight singles by Montero, Del Valle, Bono, Howell and Rodriguez after an infield error kept the Fish on the field.
Clearly, P Jimmy Groves gets the J&J for his complete game victory, surrendering just 1 unearned run on 7 hits, 3 walks while fanning 13.
“It wasn’t the ideal situation” said Musumeci. “The last thing I wanted to do was keep a pitcher on the hill for 140+ pitches on a cold night so early in the season, but the way he was going I would have needed the National Guard to help me get him off the hill.”
Other performances worth mentioning; Craig Howell- 3 for 4, RBI , Josh Montero- 2 for 4.
Groves will get a few extra days rest, as the Marlins have penciled him in for the start next Thursday vs. the Dodgers in a rematch of the first round of the fall playoffs.
But before they can look ahead to that match-up, the Teal and Black must focus on Sunday’s game vs. the 2008 CFMSBL champion Dr. Phillips Black Sox. Both teams will be heading into the game a bit short-handed, so it won’t exactly be a matchup worthy of a nationally televised audience, but it will still be a good one as the Sox/Fish rivalry adds another chapter to its begging-to-be-written biography.
On the hill will be the veteran right-hander, Joe Del Valle, (1-0, 6.43 ERA) and a host of others to keep the red-hot sticks of the Black Sox off balance.

IN OTHER NEWS……..
…………..The Orlando Marlins may have swept a doubleheader, but they lost a catcher in the process. Second year veteran Craig Howell is out indefinitely with a hernia, which not only puts additional heat on position mate Jason Taddie, but hurts the lineup as well, as Howell has just begun to get his swing back.
“It’s extremely disappointing” said manager Rich Musumeci. Howie’s been stroking the ball lately.”
Howell has hit the ball with authority this season, especially in his last game where he missed a dinger by a few feet pulling it foul.
As far as the catching position is concerned, the Fish aren’t desperate. They still have Taddie (assuming he comes back from his snowboarding trip to Canada in one piece) and veteran utility player Mickey Bono in house, but if Howell ends up missing more time than expected, they will try to pick up a catcher for the stretch run.
The Fish have not only been bitten by the injury bug, they’ve been attacked by a whole colony of them. Cymerman (hand/back), Montero (calf), Caracci (shoulder), Musumeci (back/shoulder), Lavoie (ankle); Such injuries have prompted the Marlins to fire second year strength and conditioning coach Aaron Schwarzenegger.
…………………..Lost in the opening day game vs. the Braves that turned a game played to a tie into a forfeit win for the Marlins, was a great day turned in by Marlin’s 2B Sem Cuevas. Cuevas not only started the season off hitting the ball with a passion, going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, run scored and a BB, but he played an outstanding game at 2nd, turning a tough double play, diving for balls and flat out playing aggressive baseball.
“I feel good. I’m seeing the ball well and I am here to help my team win! I was disappointed with the offensive output I turned in last season, but I’m back and ready to go!”
Cuevas earned the J&J Builder’s player of the game honors, but unfortunately, stats do not count in forfeited games. The Marlin’s brain trust felt the right thing to do was to at least give him the coveted J&J. Great game Sem!!

THE ORLANDO MARLINS SUPPORT NORINE RATHBONE...........

March 6, 2009
Norine Rathbone, our MSBL sister from the Las Vegas MSBL will be trying out this Monday for the Detroit Tigers in her quest to “swing the pink bat” on Mother’s day.

Every year on Mother’s Day, players in MLB swing a pink bat in honor of breast cancer awareness. The thought here, is who better to swing a pink bat on Mother’s Day than a breast cancer survivor?
Norine is a 9 year breast cancer survivor and a rabid baseball fan and player, playing for the 25+ Las Vegas Sandvipers.
She contacted every MLB team about the idea and received one response; The Detroit Tigers.
The organization invited her out for a tryout. Unfortunately, her teammates back in Nevada were unable to make the trip, so it would mean a lot to her if anyone from our league could make it out to show support (hang signs, etc..)

We wish Norine the BEST of luck and we’d love it if any of our CFMSBL brethren could make it to the try out on Monday morning at 9am at Joker Marchant Stadium training facility in Lakeland.

You can also catch Norine this Sunday at the Marlin/Black Sox game at 3:30pm, where she’ll be a guest Marlin for the day!

SOX TOP FISH....CC CARRIES FISH PAST DODGERS AS NEWEST MARLIN MAKES BIG SPLASH......

March 12, 2009

The Marlin’s bid for an undefeated season ended Sunday, when the Black Sox took care of business with only 8 players.
Marlin’s starter Joe Del Valle pitched pretty well, surrendering only 2 ER on 5 hits in his 4 innings of work against the Sox’ red hot bats , while Robb Cymerman, fresh off the 15 day DL, came on in relief only to not fair as well. Two hit batters, 2 walks and 3 hits were enough to drive in 3 ER’s and enough to get him pulled from the hill.
“We’re going to re-evaluate were Cym is at this point” said interim strength and conditioning coach Jack Lal Lane. “His back is still a bit tight to be snapping off those junk balls. We’ll get em straight”
Marlin’s pitching was still stout enough to hold Larry Hingle, who entered the game batting .900, to 3 hits on 5 AB’s, plummeting the lefty’s average 100 percentage points.
The Marlins were also harassed on the base paths quite a bit as Jason Black, considered by some, the fastest white boy in amateur sports, swiped 3 bags, including home plate after scoring from 2nd on a passed ball (WHAT???)
Sox 1B Richie Brower added 3 RBI’s which was the difference in the game, as the Fish were downed, 8-6.
For the Teal & Black, Sem Cuevas continued his hot streak, running 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, earning him his 2nd J&J Builder player of the game in just 4 games. Also having a good day, was Mickey Bono, who went 1 for 3 with 3 key RBI’s.
The Marlins also had some inspiration, as Las Vegas Sandviper Norine Rathbone was on hand as a Marlin for the day. Norine was an incredible first base coach and had a nice at bat against Hingle, who came on in relief for the Sox.

….Knocked out of the undefeated race, the Marlins (4-1) felt it was only right to knock off the last remaining undefeated team in the Orlando Dodgers (4-1).
It was a hard fought game with great defensive plays from both sides, as the Fish were able to hang on for a 5-4 victory.
Thanks to the Marlins new found toy in Carlos Colon’s right arm, they were able to keep the Dodger lineup at bay. CC went 5 innings, surrendered 2 un earned runs on 4 hits, 1 walk and 11 K’s. Definitely the arm the Marlins were looking for this season to take some of the burden off Groves and Del Valle.
Having multi-hit games were Cuevas, Del Valle, Sweet Lou Caracci and rookie Stephen Tearpock, All had 2 hits apiece, with Caracci and T-Pock driving in 2 each.
Tearpock it seems has found his swing and is looking more and more like the player the Marlins thought he was when they lured him away from the 18+, while Colon in one game, gave an example of how valuable and versatile he is to the ballclub.
CC had the great game on the hill, was solid at SS and CF and his triple in the 5th was the difference in the game after he scored on a Musumeci squeeze play.
Defensively, kudos go to everyone, as the game was filled with spectacular plays, like T-Bert’s dead-on throw to home plate to nail a speedy Lawrence Butcher trying to score from 2nd on a single, and Joe Del Valle’s cat-like moves as he retrieved a passed ball to throw out Heath Dean barreling down the line from 3rd.
If this team can continue to play defense, and pitch and hit like they have been, it may be a promising season after all.
Next up for the Gimps…errr….Fish, are the Cubs (3-1-1) as the Marlins try to distance themselves from the rest of the National League.
On the hill will be a well rested Jimmy Groves, 1-0 0.00 ERA.

ERRORS RETURN AS FISH LOSE TO CUBS, 9-7...

March 16, 2009

Scoring seven runs in a ballgame usually gets you a win, but when you couple those 7 runs with seven errors the result is usually unfavorable.

The Marlins (4-2) took on the division rival Cubs (4-1-1) Sunday night and once again looked flat. Shoddy fielding would do the Marlin in for a 9-7 loss.

Credit goes to a tough Cub pitching staff, with starter Joe Wieleba and reliever Curtis Leonard keeping the Marlin’s lineup in check for the most part. The Fish had to score almost all their runs with 2 out on clutch hits from Mickey Bono, Joe Del Valle and Steven Tolbert.

Bono hit the ball hard all night, going 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, while Sem Cuevas continued his aggressive play this season with 4 stolen base and multiple runs scored, running for himself and others as a courtesy runner.
Not too many bright spots in this one, but the J&J goes to Bono and Cuevas, Cuevas’s 3rd this season!

The Marlins will try to get back in the win column this Thursday night against the Mets (1-2-2). Starting pitcher to be determined.

…..IN OTHER NEWS….

With injuries continuing to mount, the Marlins hit the free agent market and turned up speedy OF Craig Pledge.
Pledge had previously played for the Orlando Royals and Patriots back in 07, and has been looking to get back on the diamond. Assistant GM Josh Montero gets credit for this signing as he was instrumental in the deal.

Pledge was one of the few lone bright spots on a struggling 5-15 Royals team in 2007. In 12 games, he took the team batting title with a .429 avg, scored 11 runs with, 4 doubles, a triple and 9 RBI’s, while swiping 5 bases.
Pledge is expected to help out the injury plagued Fish immediately. Catch him in uniform this Thursday against the Mets!

Welcome aboard Craig!!

FISH FEND OFF HUNGRY D'BACKS, DATES WTH TITANS & LUGNUTS LOOM....

March 30, 2009

“WHEW!” Exclaimed a Marlin fan as they left the ballpark Sunday night, referring to the come back victory their team had just pulled off over the Diamondbacks (0-7-1).

The D’Backs took a 7-1 lead into the 4th, harassing struggling Marlin starter Robb Cymerman for 5 hits and 5 walks. Cymerman, who’s obviously still feeling the effects of the back injury he sustained a week before the season opener, lasted just 2 and a 1/3rd before he was pulled. The Marlins put their closer Mickey Bono in with 1 out and bases loaded in the 3rd where he struck out the two batters he faced to put out the fire.

Little did the Fish know Bono would carry the load the rest of the way going 6 and 2/3rds surrendering just 1 hit while fanning 9, giving his team time to mount a comeback.
Bono had just thrown 3 innings just 3 days earlier, but knowing the Marlins were almost out of options, the Eric Gagne of the CFMSBL proceeded to hold down the hungry Diamondbacks despite arm pain.

Bono, a man of few words said “Well, it doesn’t %#@*ing tickle” when asked how his arm was feeling. But sources say he had no problem lifting his beer mug or the 4 dozen pickles he consumed at Johnny’s Filling station, post game. (Sources being Lindsey, that fine waitress at said establishment.)

For his efforts, Bono receives the J&J Builders Player of the game honors. (Bono was also 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a BB).

As for Cymerman, the troubled 2008 CFMSBL ERA leader, will most likely be shut down as far as pitching is concerned for at least a month, adding to the Marlin’s pitching woes.
The once proud and deep staff has had its struggles this season, as Cym joins Lou Caracci, Joe Del Valle and Carlos Colon on the too-injured-to-pitch list.

Up next for the Fish are the Titans (6-2) on Thursday, followed by the hard hitting Lugnuts (7-2) on Sunday.
Fox carrying both games (subject to blackouts in Central Florida area).

On the bump Thursday, the Marlin’s brain trust has decided to go with Josh Montero, who’ll be making his second start since joining the CFMSBL. Montero looked good in bullpen sessions the last couple of weeks and C Jason Taddie, who’s been aces behind the dish, will keep the reigns on the big fella.

Should Groves be released by Sunday from the lime green prison he is currently serving in, he’ll get the nod for the Nutters.

IN OTHER NEWS……….

……….Marlins catcher Craig Howell, who’s recovering from surgery to repair a hernia, is doing well and hopes to rejoin the club in a few weeks. Howell’s bat is sorely missed in the lineup and the team hopes it won’t take too long for the big stick to get his timing back when he does return.

……….J&J Builders player of the game…….vs. Angels- Mickey Bono and Lou Caracci for combining for an impressive 4 for 8 and an RBI against the flame throwing Dante Bichette.
..vs. Mets- P Carlos Colon for dominating the Mets lineup all night and IF Josh Montero for driving in 3 runs on 2 hits and a SB against his former club, while playing in complete agony. Great job guys!!

FISH LOSE GAME AND PHOTO-OP WITH LINDSEY,....(love ya Lindsey!!)..

April 3, 2009

This one didn’t live up to the hoopla and build up of the “game of the week” billing, as evident when the Fox TV sports crew began gathering their equipment and heading for the exits after the 2nd inning.
What they missed was a comeback that fell short, but was exciting nonetheless.

After Marlin’s starter Josh Montero was unceremoniously yanked from the mound in the second inning, P Joe Del Valle came on in relief and after he warmed up a bit, settled in to surrender just 1 ER in his 6 1/3rd innings of work against a strong Titans lineup.
Montero, making just his second start of his MSBL career, wore out mid way through the 2nd, probably due to the 6 simulated innings he threw before the start of the game.
Field crews claim the saw a solidly built man throwing beyond the centerfield fence on field 2 when they returned from lunch at 1pm. That man was believed to be Montero.

Montero was sharp in the first, retiring the side in order, but the wheels came off in the 2nd, when he showed signs of fatigue.

The Marlin’s resident lefty Steven Tolbert, pitched an effective 9th, getting out of a two on, no out jam.

Titan’s starter Frank Shaw pitched a gem for the complete game victory, striking out 10 Fishies on the night (Marlin’s manager Rich Musumeci struck himself out). If you haven’t heard about it yet, you will!

The 76 year old Shaw purchased dozens of tickets for his kin folk who were on-hand for the highly touted matchup. Grandson Rick Shaw had this to say; “Boyyy howdy, my pa-paw could sure throw that cow hide! I reckon he was throwin bout 45 mph!”
See Ming Shaw was just amazed that her great great grandpappy was able to stand on his feet that long. “
Way to earn that beverage big guy!

If the official scorekeeper was correct, the Marlins out hit the Titans, but could not capitalize on some scoring opportunities.

Some bright spots for the Marlins was the infield play of Bono, Montero, Cuevas and Caracci, who nearly pulled off a triple play, with the speedy Jim Matoska hustling down the first base line to avoid that dubious distinction (If your reading this Mrs. Matoska, I mean it was your brother-in-law, Chris. Jim was still on the road from S.C.!)
Montero and Cuevas also turned a sweet DP earlier in the game.

After 10 games, the odds on favorite for the Teal glove award this season is Cuevas, who has been nothing short of amazing.

J&J Builders player of the game goes to Stephen Tearpock and Lou Caracci, who were a combined 4 for 7 with 3 RBI's!

The Marlins are feeling a little pressure now, as they fall to 3rd place in their division with yet another tough game coming up Sunday against the Lugnuts.

Marlin’s stopper Jimmy Groves is expected to make his scheduled start.

Can’t get enough of your Marlins? Feel like 3 plus hours at the ball park with the men in black isn’t quite fulfilling your thirst for testosterone? Then head on down to Johnny’s Filling Station after the game and catch the Mickey Bono post game show! Joining in with their take on the game and the knuckleheads that play it, are the gorgeous and courteous “Johnny’s Girls”, Hannah, Tabatha and front office favorite, and camera shy, Lindsey.

BY THE NUMBERS…….

……..42….Errors committed by the Marlins in just 9 games..

….…..0-2…The Marlin’s record when the opposing team employs a lefty third baseman.

………5-0...The Marlin’s record when they score more runs than the other team. Similarly, the Fish sport an 0-4 record when they score less than the other team. Amazing statistical information!

FISH DROP ANOTHER CLOSE ONE, LOSE TO NUTTERS 5-4.....

April 5, 2009

The slumping but hard playing Marlins (6-5) dropped their second straight game Sunday, and their 3rd in their last 4. This one was at the hands of the always tough Orlando Lugnuts (8-3), who continued their mastery over the Teal and Black, improving their series record to 6-0 since their inception in 2006.

Marlin’s starter Jimmy Groves pitched well enough to win, but didn’t receive a whole lot of run support as his team ran into one of the top pitchers in the league in Matt Stevens. The Fish were able to get some runners on early against the Lugnut’s ace, but the flame thrower seemed to find his groove mid way through the game. “He seemed to get stronger as the game went on” said Marlin’s skipper, Rich Musumeci.

Stevens struck out 16 Fish on the night, including six straight spanning from the 7th to the 9th en route to a complete game win. Groves surrendered 3 ER on 7 hits and 4 BB’s while striking out 6 in his complete game loss, which was more than one could ask from his ace against such a powerful lineup.

A few errors would be the difference in this one, as defense continues to be a thorn in the team’s side this season.
Offensively, the Marlins out hit their opponent for the second straight game, with Carlos Colon and rookie Tim Stahl leading the way with 2 hits apiece. Both players receive the J&J Builders player of the game honors for their performance against Stevens. Colon had an RBI single in the 2nd, and scored in the 7th after his leadoff triple into right center.

Stahl, the newest addition, becomes the first ever Marlin to receive the J&J in their first game played!Stahl was signed to bolster the Marlin’s lineup, and he showed early why he was added when he drove a Stevens’s first pitch fastball straight up the middle for his first hit. In his second at bat, Stahl fouled off a few pitches before driving one to the right side of the infield, and showing off his hustle by beating the throw from the 2nd baseman.Great job guys! Welcome aboard rook!

The Fish will try to avoid a 3 game slide when they return after the Easter holiday to face their other nemesis, the Orlando Indians (3-6), whom they also have yet to beat.
One would assume the Tribe will throw their ace and former Marlin Tony Burnham (3-1, 1.50 ERA) who is RED-hot right now, as he’s only given up 8 hits in his last 21 IP and 2 in his last 12.

The Marlins are expected to counter with either veteran P Joe Del Valle (1-0, 4.15 ERA) or their well rested new toy, Carlos Colon (1-0, 2.40 ERA)

HIT THE CAGES!!!GO FISH!!

MARLINS FINALLY TASTE VICTORY OVER INDIANS, 6-0......

Howell returns, Crazy Joe throws complete game shutout, as Marlins snap 2 game slide!!
GREAT game gentlemen! Wrap-up tonight!

LACKLUSTER EFFORT NOT ENOUGH FOR WIN.....

April 26, 2009

Back to back travel weeks, an early morning game after a partying Saturday night, players arriving minutes before the game (thanks to poor signage), the starting pitcher arriving in the 3rd inning….All these things and more contributed to today’s 11-6 loss to the young Wolfpack (5-6)

The Marlins (7-7) had trouble driving in runs on many occasions due to a lack of timely hitting, although that’s been the problem most of the season, as evident in their ranking of 12 out of the league’s 16 teams in runs scored.

The Fish jumped out early to a 3-0 lead in the first, on a passed ball and a 2 run double by OF Stephen Tearpock, but the Wolfpack wasted no time answering with 4 in the bottom of the first and one more in the 2nd.
It remained 5-3, as both pitchers kept pitching out of jams…that is until the 6th, where the wheels came off the Fish-wagon and the Pack tacked on 6 runs, off a couple of errors and timely hitting for an 11-3 lead.
The Marlins answered quickly in the top half of the 7th with 3 runs, 2 off the bat of C Craig Howell’s pinch hit home run bringing the Marlins to within 5, but that would be all the scoring for the day for the good guys.

Closer Mickey Bono took the rock for the team to start things off until scheduled starter Jimmy Groves could get to the field. Unfortunately a flat mound and a lower back that apparently isn’t back to 100% hindered his usual dominant stuff. Bono surrendered 5 ER in 2 innings, walking and plunking 2 batters, while allowing 4 hits.
Groves, just trying to see the strike zone and his catcher, faired no better, laboring through what could be the worst outing of his career; 6 runs (3 ER), 6 BB’s, 7 hits and a HBP in 7 innings of work. “His fastball had nothing on it, and his curve just wasn’t biting” said one Marlin player. (Happy Birthday Jimbo!..we still love ya!)

The Fish are now in danger of slipping below .500 for the first time since February 2008 with a remaining schedule that is unforgiving.
If they hope to keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive, there needs to be an adjustment. An adjustment to the lineup, to their approach to the game, to their attitude, etc..

There needs to be a “Leave it on the field” mentality from EVERYone EVERY game to make this thing work. The team has just too much talent to be wallowing in mediocrity.

This isn’t pro ball. We aren’t collecting a paycheck to be out on the field, so unfortunately, every player cannot make every game and that’s understood. But with the roster this team sports, it should be able to win without being at full strength. This squad is way better than its 7-7 record, so let’s show it!
Let’s pick our heads up, shake ourselves off and play some damn ball I know ALL of you are capable of!
If we give our best and we lose than so be it! Tip your cap to your opponent. But in my opinion, we should have been able to beat this team today and it adds to a couple of other games that we should have won this season if we just gave a little more.

Let’s stay positive. Hit the cages, get out to the games a little earlier so we can work on defense, take a few swings before games, take an extra Advil, whatever it takes.
Let’s turn this season around and make the post season!

J&J Builder’s player of the game honors have to go to Howell, for making the drive from Oviedo for just 3 innings and knocking in 2 on his pinch hit dinger! Also, Tearpock for his 2 double, 2 RBI day!

Let’s start this Thursday against a resurgent Pirates squad that’s playing tough baseball of late, winning 4 of their last 7 games, so they are NOT be taken lightly!

Taking the hill in this one will be our OWN CC, Carlos Colon 1-0, 2.40 ERA, followed by Crazy Joe Del Valle 2-0, 2.73 ERA on Sunday, facing a Braves team looking for revenge from week one’s debacle.

Let's get back on winning track and celebrate at Johnnys!!!!

GO FISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PREVIOUS WEEK’S J&J’S;…

Vs. Indians- Joe Del Valle for his OUTstanding effort on the bump, shutting down the Tribe.

Vs. Barons- Craig Howell who went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s and Jose Rosado who also went 3 for 4 in the loss.

DELVALLE IMPROVES TO 3-0 AS MARLINS GET BACK OVER .500.....

April 30, 2009

Marlin’s starting pitcher Joe Del Valle, who‘s health was questionable coming into this season, is having a solid one on the bump thus far.
His shoulder problems stemming from last fall lingered all off season, and he entered this season wondering if he’d ever throw without pain again.

After a cortisone shot and well needed rest, Del Valle is not only pitching again, but sporting a 3-0 record and a respectful 2.59 ERA, while keeping his team in the playoff race.

Team Doctors aren’t surprised at his recovery. They site his switch back to carnivore as the saving grace to his health.
Head team physician Ira Lipschitz said, “When you deny your body natural proteins from animal flesh, you deny your body the healing power it needs. Broccoli and veggie burgers just ain’t gonna cut it” (Dr. Lipschitz studied at Brooklyn University.)

BFF and teammate Jose Rosado said “I think he looked better before the switch to Vegetarianism. He had a nice healthy butt, sort of what Jimmy Groves butt used to look like, shapely, strong and………well, I’m just glad he’s eating meat again.”

Del Valle took the hill cold Thursday night against a confident Pirates team (5-9), giving up 2 early runs on a hit, error and a walk, but slammed the door shut the remaining four innings surrendering just one additional hit.
Defensively the game wasn’t without its miscues, but the team kept them to a minimum and scored runs at every opportunity and every inning.
For his efforts, Del Valle picks up yet another J&J Builders player of the game award.

Speaking of scoring runs, C Craig Howell has been assaulting opposing pitchers since returning from abdominal surgery on March 4th. Howell has been on fire, going 7 for 12 with 4 doubles, a home run and 4 RBI’s while swiping 2 bases.
“I feel good. I’m just glad I can contribute at this level so soon” said Howell.

Howell is expected to start behind the dish this Sunday for the first time since his surgery, giving fellow catcher Jason Taddie a much needed break.
Taddie has picked up the slack since Howell’s absence, starting and playing every inning at the position. “J.T. has been a wall back there” said Manager Rich Musumeci. “His play at the position has improved immensely and he’s been the team’s most valuable player during that span.”

The game was sort of a must win in the fact that it was needed for moral. With some turmoil unfolding inside the team, it showed the guys can re-group and focus on baseball.
The Fish will try to make it two in a row as they take on the Braves Sunday night at 7pm.
On the hill for the Marlins (8-7) will be Carlos Colon 1-0, 2.40, who swapped starts with Del Valle.

The team will be bringing in a couple of new faces Sunday, as they re-organize for the final push.
The Fish welcome rookie free agent and hard throwing P Luis Soto and hard hitting rookie utility man, Albie Santiago.
Welcome aboard boys!

GO FISH!!

MARLINS BLOW 5-2 LEAD, LOSE 13-7.....

May 3, 2009

The Marlins find themselves right back to .500, after tangling with the dangerous Orlando Braves (6-9-1) late Sunday.

Marlin’s starter Carlos Colon pitched a great game through six innings, leaving the game with a 5-2 lead, but quite like the 2008 NY Met’s bullpen, the Marlin’s pen couldn’t hold on to the lead.
The Braves bats came alive after the 6th and exploded for 11 runs on 6 walks, 7 hits, a hit batsman and an error.
The Fish would score only two more runs in response, en route to a 13-7 loss.
Colon pitched well, surrendering just 2 ER on 5 hits and 3 walks while fanning five.

Total blame can’t be on the bullpen however, as the Marlins defense kind of just went through the motions, letting Brave’s runners advance at will. “We just didn’t play with any heart” said manager Rich Musumeci. “I didn’t see a lot of communication going on, or runners being held in check. That needs to improve dramatically if we expect to reach the postseason.”

That certainly wasn’t the case for every Marlin, as rookie utility Albie Santiago played an enormous game at third.
Santiago also was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI in his debut. Santiago was named the J&J Builders player of the game award after closing out the 9th, striking out 2.
Definitely a solid addition to the ball club.

Offensively, Craig Howell lead the charge again going 3 for 4 with 2 SB’s, improving his average to a nasty .609 (this just in,..... he's pretty good) and 1B Josh Montero hit the ball hard all night, driving in 2 on a crucial two out single in the 2nd, after driving one deep to center in the first, which probably would have reached the base of the fence if it wasn’t caught by CF Medina Jr. on a heck of a play. Montero also added 2 stolen bases of his own.

Incredibly, if the playoffs began today the struggling Marlins (8-8) would be the 6th and final seed, having to play the first place Titans (11-3). NOT an easy task.

Fortunately, there is plenty of baseball left and the Fish have an opportunity to improve their play and record to try and climb a little higher.

Next up will be the Yankees (6-9), Thursday May 14th. Stopper Joe Del Valle 3-0, 2.59 is expected to get the nod with Jimmy Bob Groves unavailable for the next 2 weeks working the farm up in Virginia. (Yee-Haw!)

Enjoy the rest and your Mother’s Day weekend!

MARLINS NO MATCH FOR JR. METS......

May 20, 2009

The 18+ NABF FL. Mets (7-10) came ready to take on the Orlando Marlins (8-9) late Sunday, with a solid game plan in place; Keep the old guys off balance, play tight defense and be aggressive at the plate.
All three worked perfectly, as they went home victors, 12-6.

The Mets starting pitcher cruised through the first two innings, without breaking 40mph on his “fastball”. After lulling the struggling fish to sleep, the Mets followed with the exact opposite in their reliever who seemed to throw 90+ compared to his predecessor.

The Marlins were able to tie the game at 5 a piece by the end of the 6th, but the Mets capitalized on the gracious six outs offered to them in the 7th, scoring 6 runs to put the game out of reach.

Marlin’s starter Joe Del Valle was roughed up early in the first 3 innings, but settled down til the 7th where errors and a high pitch count took their toll.
Carlos Colon came on in relief, but his luck wasn’t any better.

The Fish would have scored a lot more runs had their third base coach’s depth perception problem not affect his coaching. Three runners nailed at the plate on spectacular plays and an appeal play at 3rd after a would be sac fly, eradicated any chances of runs or rally.

Instead, they find themselves below .500 for the first time in 15 months and on the outside looking in as far as postseason is concerned with a nearly impossible stretch run coming up. Games against the Lugnuts, Titans, and Black Sox , the three toughest teams in the league, as well as the playoff hungry Reds and Dodgers and the always ready to play Indians.

Combine that with a roster that’s about to experience many changes, and you have one big hill to climb.
Time will tell if the team is ready for the challenge, or play out the string and prepare for fall.

The Marlins hit the ball well, and had it not have been for the 8 errors, probably would have come away with a much needed victory.
Player of the game honors go to Josh Montero, who went 2 for 3 with 2 SB’s and OF Jose Rosado, who was also 2 for 3 while driving in 2 runs.
Also having good days at the plate, were Joe Del Valle (2 -4, 2B, RBI) and C Craig Howell (1-3, 3B, RBI).

The Marlins tangle next with the Lugnuts (12-4-1) Tuesday, May 26th at 7pm.
On the hill, if he makes it back from the Mustang ranch in Vegas, will be Jimmy Groves 1-3, 3.16 ERA, looking to get his squad back to .500.

FAREWELL……

The Marlins have to regretfully bid farewell to 2B Sem Cuevas and P Lou Caracci due to the two having to move out of town.

Caracci, looking to get closer to his ailing family members, will be leaving Tuesday for Virginia. Sweet Lou only spent a fall and spring season with the team, but it didn’t take long to figure out he was a great teammate and person and will be missed.

Cuevas has taken a job that will be bringing him back home to his native Puerto Rico. With just 1 or 2 games remaining for him, it is a sad time for the team.
Cuevas signed with the Fish in the fall of 07, and helped the team win a championship that same year. He served as the much needed leadoff man the team was looking for when they signed him, swiping 27 bases and scoring 62 runs in 4 seasons (2 fall, 2 spring).

We wish you guys all the best, and hope we see you again at some point.

PLAYOFF CHANCES NOT ENOUGH TO SPARK FISH.......

June 19, 2009

“It don’t come easy” said Ringo Starr in his 1971 hit, which could be the 2009 Orlando Marlins anthem.

The Fish (9-10) dropped another must win game Sunday, losing to the Reds (8-10-2), 5-3. It was a sloppy one for both sides, featuring some great pitching and not many hits.
In fact, the game saw more errors (14) than hits (9), with the Reds taking both categories.

Red’s starter Jose Taveras took control of the game from the mound and the plate, matching the Marlin’s total hit output of three by himself, while adding 3 RBI’s to boot.
It was the lowest hit total for the Marlins in years, as they could not get anything going against the former Blue Jay ace.

Marlin’s starter Jimmy Groves, who lost his 4th game of the season, was victimized by errors and no run support despite pitching a hell of a ball game. One ER, 5 hits, 1 BB and 6 K’s in 9 innings of work was Groves’ line.

OF Carlos Colon scored on a passed ball and a 2 out 2 run Mickey Bono single were all the runs the Fish could muster.
Groves gets the P.O.G. for his effort!
A much better showing will be needed against the defending champs this Sunday if the Marlins plan on playing in the post-season. It’s a “win and you’re in” situation. We’ll see if the Marlins can rise to the challenge.

BY THE NUMBERS…….

100- …..Josh Montero’s Career hits as a Marlin
4-…….. Strikeouts needed for Jimmy Groves to reach 300 in his CFMSBL career.
2………Losing seasons the Marlins had out of 8 since their inception in 2005. (There is a danger of suffering their 3rd in season 9).

MARLINS ALL-STAR REPS HELP NATIONAL LEAGUE TO VICTORY....

July 20, 2009

Marlin's IF Mickey Bono broke a 1-1 tie in the 7th with a 2 run single to right, putting his National league teammates up for good, as they cruised to a 6-1 rain shortened game.

P Jimmy Groves worked the 3rd and 4th innings and kept the American all-stars from scoring on his watch, while 1B Josh Montero took a Larry Hingle rocket to the back before rain killed the day.

Game 2 which was supposed to feature our 28+ best against the 38+ all stars was a washout. C Craig Howell was scheduled to participate in that one.

The Fish will shut it down for a month or so while management tries to figure out their roster in chrisis and their best options moving forward.

Have a great summer, we'll be in touch.

MARLINS FRONT OFFICE GEARS UP FOR BUSY OFF-SEASON....

July 14, 2009

Another season comes to a close and the Marlins unfortunately fell short of their goal of another post-season appearance.
It was a season full of drama, slumps, errors and arguments, but despite all that, the Fish still had a chance to grab the 5th seed until their final game (at the time) against the Sox, where the Marlin express came to an abrupt halt.

“HA, yea that train threatened to de-rail a number of times this season” said Vice President in charge of baseball operations, Mike Piazza.
“I really feel we’re back on track now and there seems to be a serious commitment from our players to get the franchise back to respectability, if we ever had any.”

There were some great stories aside from the negativity;
Rookie OF Stephen Tearpock, whom the Marlins stole days before the season began, turned out to be a nice addition, tieing for the team lead in RBI's with veteran cleanup man, Mickey Bono.
T-Pock seemed to be money, with runners in scoring position.

The discovery of OF Carlos Colon's pitching prowess, which helped the Marlins get through a tough season with a thin pitching staff.

And of course the offensive display of second year man C Craig Howell, who after returning from early season hernia surgery, caught fire grabbing the team Silver Slugger award and his first All-star nod.
Workouts will begin sometime in August and the Fish hope to have some final roster answers by that time.

Transactions ;
Marlins grant IF Nelson Rodriguez, OF Jose Rosado and rookie P/OF Luis Soto their unconditional release.
It may sound like a Puerto Rican house cleaning, but it wasn’t the Marlins doing.
Mainstays Jose Rosado, Nelson Rodriguez along with rookie Luis Soto are bailing ship to start their own squad.
The Orlando Brewers will begin play this fall. Marlin’s brass weren’t exactly excited about the idea, but the official statement from the front office is; “We wish them well, and the best of luck. The door will remain open for their possible return.”

N-Rod will be missed, despite his questionable work ethic and off the field problems (HA! I can write what I want about you now, n-g!), as will Rosado, who was a great team player, hustler and clubhouse guy. The Fish also got a glimpse this past Sunday of what they’ll be missing with the hard throwing Soto.”

But the team must move on and plan for the future, with the front office personnel having to cancel summer vacation plans to aggressively attack the free agent market to ensure the team remains competitive in time for the fall season.

The Marlins will still have their core of studs, in Montero, Bono, Howell, Groves, Taddie, Colon, T-Bert, T-Pock and improving rookie Tim Stahl, with a possible former Marlin or two returning home. The Marlins are committed to putting a quality product on the field, and will explore every avenue to stay solid.

The Orlando Marlins are not unlike the NY Yankees in their desire to win, except for the fact they don’t have any money :).

MARLINS LEFT FOR DEAD, REVIVED BY NEW GM, MONTERO.....

August 5, 2009

The Orlando Marlins were in crisis mode after the departure of their Latin players, who left for a new start. Those key players, plus others who decided to take the fall season off, were stripped from the roster, leaving just 8 remaining bodies.

The Marlin’s front office went to work immediately. First order of business; promote Josh Montero to GM and Director of baseball operations. Result; a revamped and re-tooled Marlins team in just days.

Left with eight returning players with less than a month to go before opening day, Montero cancelled vacation plans, postponed his bikini waxing and dove into his new responsibility. In a matter of days, the team is starting to resemble a pretty formidable squad.

His signings began with a well known name around the league, OF/DH Matt Defiglio, formerly of the powerhouse Lugnuts, who returns to the 28+ after a season of tearing up the young guns in the 18+. In 60 games in 5 seasons with the Nutters, Defiglio batted a hefty .448, ripping 12 doubles, 9 triples with 50 RBI, while swiping 22 stolen bases.
Needless to say, Defiglio adds a huge threat in the Marlin’s lineup they so sorely need.

“This guy is flat out nasty” said Montero, after inking the deal.
But Montero wasn’t done there.
Also coming over from the 18+ is OF/P Joe Mahon. Mahon led his team with a .443 avg. thru 24 games this season, driving in 24 runs on 3 doubles and 5 homers, while stealing 24 bases. Arguably the fastest guy in the Central Florida Baseball League, Mahon should add some much needed speed and power to a Marlins lineup that has struggled to score runs at times. Mahon can also throw, which makes him that much more valuable.

But it wasn’t just offense Montero aimed for. He knew with the departure of SP Carlos Colon and the news of SP Darrin Reichle’s hiatus extension, incumbent starter Jimmy Groves was going to need some help.
During Montero’s shopping spree, he was able to pluck the battle tested veteran Jeff Francher from the Lugnuts. Francher has seen his fair share of big games and championships and his addition is key to the Marlins success.

Negotiations are ongoing with another big time pitcher to add to the mix, and with the hard throwing Mahon, and current Marlins Mickey Bono and Steven Tolbert, the Fish should be set in that department.

Montero claims he’s only just begun, and considering what he’s done in less than a week, it should be an exciting stretch as we head towards the season opener!

GO FISH!!

CAN'T BEAT 'EM? JOIN 'EM!!............

August 14, 2009

……..Or in this case, beat the crap out of them, THEN join em!

The Orlando Marlins have officially closed out their rebuilding efforts with five of the biggest Marlin killers they have ever faced in the past; former Crew C/IF Wash Respess, Black Sox’ P/OF Larry Hingle, 1B Richie Brower, P/OF Kevin Gallaher, and possibly the most complete hitter in the CFMSBL, the 2009 spring batting champ, Utility player Cory Huston.

The signings were the final puzzle pieces put in place by Marlin’s new GM, Josh Montero, who deserves 99% of the credit for the rebuild (1% going to team owner and Manager Rich Musumeci for the final
OK).
“I spent a lot of hours on the phone, in restaurants, at the gym and the cages with these guys, trying to put this all together.” said Montero. “This is arguably the deepest most talented squad the CFMSBL has ever seen, if I do say so myself! I’m looking forward to the team having a successful season!”

The thoroughbreds now in the Marlin’s stable, takes the pressure of winning to the next level.
“How can you NOT win with these guys” asked longtime Marlin fan, and season ticket holder, Erma Liebowitz. “I’ve watched these guys since way back in their inaugural season in 2005, and I can easily say this team is loaded!”

In the four Sox players alone, the Fish get 110 RBI’s, that’s 18 more than the whole Marlins roster drove in combined this past season!, 37 extra base hits, 4 more than the entire Marlins roster, and 3 top tier pitchers, not to mention some great defensive players to boot.

Wash Respess’s numbers are gaudy as well, (.411, 16 2B, 2 3B, 79 RBI, 49 SB's in 101 games) starring as one of the top hitters on a very strong and successful Lakeland Crew team for years. Respess served as a catcher and third basemen, helping the Crew to a number of championships.
The Marlins went after Respess hard in the 2008 spring season, though he remained semi-retired that season, but the Fish are thrilled to have him now.

On the pitching side, there’s no hiding the arms of Hingle, Gallaher and Huston. Adding those weapons to the incumbent Jimmy Groves and recently acquired veteran Jeff Francher and free agent Joe Mahon, makes for one heck of an arsenal.

It’s a new beginning for the Marlins, one that is full of promise and exciting baseball ahead.
Mediocrity be damned!

GO FISH!!!!

IN OTHER NEWS.........

......One of the Marlin's original players from their opening day roster, P/1B Rob Hancock, has officially hung up his spikes and is calling it a career.

Hancock surprised everyone at the team's first workouts with his hustle and stick. especially since it was the first time on a baseball diamond in 20 years.

"Lefty is that kind of guy" said long time friend and teammate, Todd Teeter. "He could pick up a golf club, baseball bat, whatever, and not having played that sport in years, play like he's never missed a beat."

Hancock made the team and was quickly inserted into the number 2 spot in the lineup despite his lack of speed. "He hardly ever struck out" said Musumeci. "He was a great contact hitter."

Aside from his success at the plate, Hancock excelled at 1B, scooping anything thrown his way.
"That mitt was friggin huge!" said Jimmy Groves. "You couldn't overthrow him if you tried."

Hancock also tried his hand at pitching, and owned the nastiest curveball the team has seen. No run support and poor defensive play would usually sabotage most of his outings.

After shattering his arm while pitching in a scrimmage game the summer of '05, Hancock laid low and vowed to make it back to the diamond.

Two years later, he'd return to the team.
Although he'd never pitch again, Hancock picked up where he left off at the plate and finished with a .303 avg. on the year and stuck around for a couple more before announcing his retirement Thursday.

A knee injury late last fall sidelined him for the remainder of the season and he never fully recovered from that and his chronic back pain.
"He played hurt pretty much every game he played, but was always ready to do whatever the team asked." said Musumeci. "He will be sorely missed"

Hancock finished his career with a respectable .298 avg. and 3.81 ERA.

MARLINS FALL TO LUGNUTS, 2-1.......

August 16, 2009

The battle of two skeleton crews in the searing Florida heat was won by the Lugnuts, 2-1 in 4 innings, proving once again the Fish, no matter what, cannot seem to end up on the winning side against this squad, even in a meaningless scrimmage!

Some bright spots were the speed and glove of new CF Joe Mahon, who made a diving catch in the 3rd he had no business being near, and the 2 shutout innings by Jeff Francher. Francher looked solid, mixing his pitches and keeping his former mates off balance, surrendering a hit and a walk.
Thanks to Stephen Tolbert for volunteering to strap on the catchers gear! Nice job back there!

Both teams were missing players, and the Fish were without a majority of their new aquisitions due to work and vacationers.

A deeper squad is expected next Sunday, as the Fish square of against some of their former teammates when they take on the Brewers at noon at Jones HS.

Thanks to those of you who brought league dues today. Those of you who have not, or couldn't make it, please pay league directly, or bring it with you next Sunday. Thanks!!

FISH EDGE POTENT BREWER LINEUP IN FINAL PRE-SEASON TUNEUP, 8-7.........

August 30, 2009

So, what do we know about these new look Marlins?
So far we know IF Mickey Bono would rather not catch, P Jeff Francher would prefer not to hit and CF Joe Mahon only wants to pitch if he has to.
Yet all three excelled this preseason doing what they’d rather not do.

With four more than capable catchers on the roster, 5th string catcher Mickey Bono, had to darn the equipment for both games, and showed he’s just as good there as anywhere on the diamond. Bono called great games and made, what could be the first time in CFMSBL history, certainly Marlin history, 3 put outs in the same inning at the position in the final game against the Brewers.

First, Bono tagged out former roommate and teammate Carlos Colon attempting to score from 2nd on a single, on a laser from Mahon in center. Next, he received a throw from LF Stephen Tearpock and tagged out another runner for the second out and finally, to complete the hat trick, retrieved a pitch that got away from him and tagged the runner trying to steal home from 3B.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen that” said former Marlin turned Brewer, Jose Rosado.

Jeff Francher joined the team as a pitcher and made it clear he did not require at bats. He wanted to do what he does best, pitch. But due to a thin pre-season roster, he was asked to bat. All he did was go 2 for 4 with an RBI while hitting the ball with authority every time.
“When asked what he planned to do this season with Francher and the lineup, manager Rich Musumeci exclaimed, “We have some serious sticks on this squad, so he (Francher) won’t be asked to hit too often, but rest assured he will see at bats!”

Finally, CF Joe Mahon informed the team that with all the pitchers it employs, he’d step back and only pitch if he absolutely had to. Well, last Sunday he absolutely had to. With only Francher and Bono listed as pitchers, Bono was already behind the dish and Francher started the game. Mahon came on in relief and began to dismantle one of the most powerful lineups in the league.
Mahon inherited a 6-1 deficit and allowed his team to chip away en route to an 8-7 victory. Joe-“I don’t really want to pitch” Mahon's line was 5 IP, 1 run, 2 hits and 5 K’s.
Say it ain’t so Joe! You gotta pitch now!!

Offensively, the Marlins were kept at bay against their former mates Joe Del Valle and Carlos Colon, but took advantage of the Brewer's inexperienced bullpen.
Some bright spots were 1B Richie Brower going 2 for 3 with a BB and an RBI, all without picking up a bat since the spring championship games!
And OF Matt DeFiglio showed a great eye as he was 1 for 2 with 2 walks and a ribbie.

The Fish had 3 errors on the day, with just one leading to a run.

Overall, the Marlins were pretty pleased with the pre-season results, especially since the players that weren’t available are the heart of the lineup!
With the Marlins upgrading, and most of the teams in the league improving and re-loading, all signs point to a great season! GO FISH!!!!

The Marlins want to thank their former utility player and current Brewer Curtis Lugo for helping out his former short-handed team Sunday. Lugo started at 3rd and relieved Bono behind the dish the last few innings.
Lugo also contributed offensively, going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s that put the Marlins up to stay.

There were some negotiations going on during the game between the two teams, regarding Lugo. But in the end, the Brewers ended up keeping the talented utility player.

Good luck Lugo!

FISH GET BY TOUGH REBUILT ANGELS SQUAD, 9-5......

September 13, 2009

The O-Town Marlins (1-0) won their opener Sunday, defeating a tough Angel’s team, 9-5.

The re-built Marlins took the field Sunday night feeling confident and strong, but the Angels starting pitcher had other ideas. The Marlins high powered offense was kept in check, recording not a single hit heading into the 4th inning, as the Angels clung to a 2-0 lead.
Marlin’s skipper Rich Musumeci repeatedly tried to jinx the no-no by reminding his players several times and in the 4th it finally paid off when SS Cory Huston launched a ball into deep center for a leadoff triple. That rocket was followed by 4 straight hits; an RBI single from Larry Hingle, a double to center by 1B Richie Brower, a triple blasted to right off the bat of OF Matt Defiglio, and an infield hit by 2B Wash Respess. Almost instantaneously, 5 runs crossed the plate, making it 5-2.

The Angels scraped 3 runs across off a few walks to tie the game in the top of the 5th, but the Fish stormed back in their half of the inning with 4 more. Another leadoff triple, this time from Josh Montero. Huston then walked and stole 2nd, before Hingle singled in his 2nd and 3rd runs on the night. Brower added another run on a good looking single, and after a single and a walk, 3B Mickey Bono used his eagle eye to work a walk for the final run of the night.
The Angels immediately started warming up a reliever, but the outfield lights suddenly went off, and the game was called by the umps.
It was a short 5 inning game, and there were lots of hits and great performances, but player of the game honors goes to Lawrence Bartholomew Hingle, who walked and drove in 3 runs on 2 singles.
Others with good games at the plate were, newly acquired Matt DeFiglio, 2 for 3, 3B, 2 RBI, and Richie Brower, 2 for 3, 2B , RBI, 2 runs scored.
Defensively, Mickey Bono was a vacuum at 3B and played with the intensity he did at SS during the 2007 championship season.
There wasn’t too much else to see defensively, as there weren’t too many outs recorded in the field, thanks to the pitching of veteran Jeff Francher.
Francher surrendered 2 runs in the first and he started to tire in the 5th, surrendering 3 walks to load the bases, two of which scored when reliever Joe Mahon had a little trouble finding the strike zone. But in between, Franch went on a tear, striking out 7 straight from the 1st to the 3rd, totaling 10 through 4 2/3rds. A solid start despite the hiccups at the end, but Mahon gets the credit for the win as the Fish regained the lead on his watch.

Next up for the Marlins are the fledgling Brewers, but don’t be fooled by the “fledgling” label. This team is stacked up and down the lineup with some gritty, hard hitting veterans, a lot of them former Marlins!
The Fish will send spaghetti Jimmy (Groves), bad attitude and all to the hill for his first start of the fall season.

FRANCHER PITCHES A BEAUTY, AS MARLINS WIN UGLY, 7-1......

September 27, 2009

The Marlins improved to 3-0-1 with their win over the Pirates (0-3) on Sunday, but it wasn’t pretty.

Pirates starting pitcher Raul Matos and reliever Phil White, held the hard hitting Marlins to just 4 hits all game, but the Fish were able to capitalize on a couple of errors , walks and hit batters.

The Marlins took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Bucs tied it in the 3rd. The score remained tied until the 5th, when after a Craig Howell walk, 1B Richie Brower belted an RBI double to put the Fish up to stay. Bono singled in Brower to make it 3-1 and the rest turned out to be insurance runs, as Marlin’s starter Jeff Francher kept the Pirates from mounting any rallies.

Francher earned his first win in a Marlin uniform, going the distance in the time shortened game. Francher surrendered just one run on 12 hit and 1 BB while striking out 4.

For his efforts, Francher receives the player of the game honors along with 1B Richie Brower for coming through once again in the clutch and driving in the game winner.

As of right now, due to some scheduling issues, the Marlin’s next tentative games are Tuesday October 20th and Wednesday October 21st.
It is a long way off, but the Fish could use the rest, as injuries are piling up.

CF Joe Mahon, who’s been playing through a pinched nerve in his non-throwing shoulder, had to pull himself out of the game in the first inning Sunday. “Joe’s been toughing it out for two months now. He can use this rest to get healthy” said skipper Rich Musumeci.

Mahon had an MRI scheduled for Tuesday morning and team doctors are trying to determine what needs to be done. Obviously the team hopes he can use the long layoff to get back to 100%.

Also injuring himself in Sunday’s game was 1B Josh Montero. Montero, who already has been playing with a torn labrum and other various shoulder issues, looks as if he may be out for the season.
Montero had an MRI Wednesday morning, and initial results aren’t looking good.

Marlin’s head physician, Dr. Scwartzberg says aside from destroying what was left of Montero’s labrum, he also fractured his Proximal Humerus, requiring surgery as soon as possible.
Montero remained in the game at the time, but appears to be in a lot of pain now.

Surgery and rehab puts Montero out for most if not all of the coming spring season, a huge blow to the team.

This team is deep, but it’s losing some key contributors one by one. We’ll see in the weeks to come, how this ballclub responds.

Also calling it a season, is C Jason Taddie, whose wife is expecting their 2nd child in a week or so. “I’m going to have my hands full” said Taddie.

Stay tuned for schedule updates. I’ll be in touch as soon as I hear the final changes.

In the win against the Brewers, Jimmy Groves was lights out, as he held their potent lineup to just 5 hits, pitching his way to his first win of the fall season and another complete game to his resume.
Great performance by everyone, but Groves picks up his umpteenth POG.

The game against the Lugnuts saw the long awaited Marlin debut of All Star Larry Hingle. After shaking off some rust, Hingle looked solid through 6 innings, and left the game with a 4-2 lead, but the Marlin’s bullpen couldn’t hold the Nutters in check, as they tied it up to end the game.
For his outstanding work on the hill, Hingle gets his second player of the game as a Marlin.

Nice start guys! Let's keep it rolling!

Uniforms are in!

MARLINS GEAR UP FOR MARATHON........

October 18, 2009

The Orlando Marlins, who have been on hiatus since Sept 27th, are preparing for a grueling 8 games in 20 days, as they try to advance into the post season with a slew injuries.

The marathon begins Tuesday night, as they take on the Orlando Indians, who have been struggling a bit this season, but always give the Marlins they're best as evident in their record against the Fish (3-1-1).
The Black and Teal will be sending Jimmy Groves to the hill for that one.

Catch the Marlins the following evening (Wed) when they play host to the tough Mulberry Barons. The Marlin's new toy, Lawrence Barthlomew Hingle will be looking for his first win in a Marlin uniform, and closing out the week on Sunday morning will see Jeff Francher taking on the Mets.

Just a reminder;
The uniforms are in and I will get them from Josh Monday. He asks, if you haven't floated him some money for them yet, please bring it this week.

For those of you who haven't seen them, they are pretty sharp!
Let's get it rolling boys!

MONTERO, MAHON OUT FOR SEASON....

The Marlins lost 2 players in the game against the Pirates, IF Josh Montero and CF/P Joe Mahon.

Montero underwent successful shoulder surgery, where doctors repaired his Labrum and a broken bone in his shoulder.

Montero, speaking from his home in Heathrow the day after the surgery and drugged up with multiple pain killers, had this to say;
"I'm feelin mighty fine. The horse at the hot dog truck told me the tea bags at the Radisson Hotel on International Drive has spider eggs in the basement attic......Happy President's Day!...... Hi.... Where's my teddy?"

The phone interview was ended abruptly by Mrs. Montero that day, but she has since told us Josh is doing just fine and is ahead of schedule on his re-hab.

Mahon, however has been told to shut it down to avoid surgery to repair the ruptured disc in his neck. Depending on the severity of the injury, he may need surgery regardless.
Mahon will remain with the ballclub in an assistant coaching role.

The Marlins send their sincere regards to both players and hope they return in the spring completely healthy.

In light of the injuries, the Marlins signed former Black Sox OF/P Jeff Tift. Tift saw minimum action this past spring with the Sox due to his commitment to our military, but should be good to go for the remainder of the fall.

Thanks for your service Jeff, and welcome aboard!!!

MARLINS TO FACE FORMER BROTHERS, BREWERS IN SEMI's........

November 11, 2009

The Orlando Brewers knocked off the 6th seed Dodgers in 12 innings, 8-7 Tuesday night, to advance to the semi finals and earned a shot at our Western division champion Marlins this Thursday night.

The Fish took the first game of this competitive series, 11-1 back in September, but the Brewers have since rolled off some impressive wins and has their offense putting up some serious runs.

Our heroes will be without some big sticks Thursday, so they must come together as a group and step it up. Leading the charge will be utility Cory Huston, who has continued to hit the ball despite been playing through a pulled hamstring, C Craig Howell who has been ripping the rawhide and Spartan himself, 1B Richie Brower who has a hit in every game this season, a Marlin record!

On the hill for the Marlins will be Jimmy Groves, 3-0, 1.71 ERA, looking to advance his team into their second championship game in 3 years. GO FISH!!!

MSBL Network has dubbed this one, the “Battle in da Hood!”

Individual seats still available.

BREWERS END MARLIN'S HOPES OF RETURN TO CHAMPIONSHIP.....

November 13, 2009

GREAT season Marlins!! 10-1-1 was the best in franchise history! We just couldn't put the final pieces together and rise above the multitude of injuries and missing teammates.

Special thanks to Cory Huston for playing and pitching through agonizing injuries and Josh Montero for coming back WAYYYYY too early from shoulder surgery to help fill some gaps. Glad you didn't re-injure the shoulder.

Rest up and enjoy the off-season, guys. We'll be back stronger than ever in the spring!!

Stats updated tonight (Friday) and post season wrap up shortly after.

Congrats to Jimmy Groves, Craig Howell and Mickey Bono on their all-star nods! Represent!!

IN OTHER NEWS

………..The Marlins fell upon a gem this offseason in 1B/3B Will Baker.
Baker, an MSBL veteran, has played in Kansas City (KCMSBL) for the 28+ Cardinals and in Northern Illinois (NIMSBL), where he helped the 25+ Diamond Jaxx to a championship title.
The newest Marlin swings a heavy bat and is equipped with a strong arm and is expected to fit real nicely in the middle of the Marlin’s lineup.
Welcome aboard Will!!

………..Marlin’s post season MVP and regular season Silver Slugger award winner Cory Huston is expected to undergo shoulder surgery shortly after the USSSA tournament, which puts a huge hole in the Marlin’s spring season lineup.

Huston has been dealing with shoulder pain for awhile and may have caused more damage during his warrior-like performance, taking the hill in the Marlin’s only playoff game this past fall.

Scheduled starter Jimmy Groves was a late scratch due to shoulder pain of his own. Huston approached management and asked for the rock, despite not throwing all season.

Huston fared well, but the hard-hitting Brewers managed a few key hits in front of the Marlin outfielders and was pulled in the 5th after his shoulder said enough is enough.

The Marlins are hoping for a speedy recovery for Huston.

MARLINS SWIM PAST PIRANHAS 5-2, BUT FALL SHORT TO CARDINALS IN CHAMPIONSHIP...........

January 17, 2010

Marlin's tourney run ends in finals in 5-2 loss to 18+ USSSA Cardinals.

Thanks again to our leaguemates who joined us. We certainly represented our 28+ CFMSBL!! It was a great time and we look forward to the next one!

Thanks to Jorge Munoz and Tim Langley for running a great tournament! The Lake Myrtle Sports Complex is a top notch facility with Disney quality fields. VERY nice!

Special thanks to Astro's skipper Dan Jarvis and Nutter's Captain, Chris Fisher for loaning us their horses, and Titans Jim Matoska for coming out Sunday and starting final game. We couldn't have done it without all of you.

Stats and post tourney wrap up in a day or two.

On to 2010 Spring season!!
