Catching is one of those position that is so overlooked by many. But for those that truly understand this game know that without a strong catcher, your team is limited. Even with a Picther who is considered lights out, the close games are won and lost from behind the plate just as much as it is from the Pitcher’s mound.
Without a strong Catcher, many games that should have been won are lost. The influence of a very good catcher in all facets of the game are undeniable. The catcher has control of everyone and everything because they are the one person that has the entire game played in front of them.
Acting as the field General, the Catcher should take control over everything that goes on. From calling the pitches, to directing fielders out of position, to constantly communicating, to winning over the Home Plate umpire. A Catcher needs to be a dynamic and unique player.
Coach Caz will teach Catchers how to become this special player. Initially by working on the required Catchers skill set such as:
· Receiving Pitches
· Framing Pitches
· Blocking Balls in the Dirt, and
· Throwing Out Base Runners
In addition, Catchers will be taught the intangibles of the position. These including:
· Calling games
· Setting Up Hitters
· Keeping Hitters Off Balance
· Reading Hitters and exploiting their weakness
· And most importantly, Winning over the Home Plate Umpires Strike Calls
All of the above abilities and skills lend to the argument that the Catcher is the most important player on the field.
