Kildonan Cavaliers History

The Kildonan Cavaliers Soccer Club was formed in 1993 by David Stewart, Norbert Klatt, and Dwayne Sweetland. As an indoor team playing in the newly created Soccer Spectrum, the group created a friendship and bond that has endured many years. and created a unique club atmosphere revered by many organizations around the league. We joined the Manitoba Central Soccer League under the name Winnipeg Strike (Strikers) in 1994 for Division 3 Outdoor season and later changed the name to Kildonan Cavaliers. The core group of the team was made up of juveniles form the Bronx Park U-17 community club and players from Oakbank and North Kildonan areas. We remained in Division 3 until 1998, where we finished 2nd in the division and earned a promotion to Division 2. In 1999 we finished 10th and were relegated back to division 3 for the year 2000, where we then finished in fourth place.

Some of our accomplishments included winning the first annual playoffs in 1997, where we had finished 5th overall in Division 3. In 1998 we won the playoff championship again after finishing 2nd in the division, beating the 4th place Players' Club in the final.

2001 was a great year for the Cavaliers. We finished 1st in the division, scoring the most goals and earning promotion to division 2 for the 2002 season in the newly named Manitoba Major Soccer League.

In 2002, the Cavaliers finished a respectable 6th in the division and unfortunately were knocked out of the first round of the playoffs by Hanover of Steinbach Manitoba.

2003 introduced some new faces, with long serving Cavaliers leaving for personal commitments. This new look squad finished a respectable 4th place out of 12 teams, finishing with an overall 11-4-7 record, 42 GF and 26 GA, the 3rd best in the division.

The Cavaliers started the 2004 campaign with a new executive. Joining David Stewart would be long time player Chris Hildebrandt, goalie Dale Kingerski and new arrivals Vic Jean Paul and Jeff Hiebert. The ultimate goal being to ensure that the Cavaliers remain a competitive club in the Manitoba Major Soccer League.

2004 the club finished 3rd overall with an impressive 13-7-2 record, 51 GF and 28 GA to lead the division as the best defensive unit in the league. The team was also awarded the Bennet Lindsay Cup for Sportsmanship. It was bitter sweet, because the Cavaliers had occupied the 1st place spot for most of the season.

2005 ended not with a whimper, not with a bang, just ended. Cavs finished a respectable 6th place, with an 8-8-6 record and 39 GF, 39 GA

They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs to 3rd place finisher Selkirk. A tough match for both, the game was not decided in regular time or in(2) over time periods. The dreaded penalty kicks decided the eventual winner, with the Selkirk keeper slotting the eventual winner against Nazar.

2007 had the Cavs in the newly formatted 2nd Division with 18 teams. The Cavs finished in 6th place, with an 8-5-4 record.

2008 was a more troubling year, finishing 13th out of 18 teams with a 7-10-1 record. Restructuring in the league produced a 19 team division but the Cavs weren't in danger of being relegated.

2009 began the search for a coach as the Cavs needed someone with tactical experience on the field and who could identify players to help the team get to the next division. A coach was found but due to a difference in philosophies between the coach and executive, parted ways with 8 games into the season. The executive spoke to Abdel Khalboubi, who was a player and asked him to assume the role for the remainder of the season.

The division had 18 teams and played an interlocking schedule with the reduced 3 team Master's Division. Kildonan finished close as they had to the previous season, 7-9-4.

2010 found the Cavs with a new coach, Jim Conceicao who had guided the Park City youth team to championships, and helped Roma earn promotion to the premier division. Bringing in 8 new players for the season, the Cavs battled in a the newly named "Major League Two", which was essentially Division 3 after the league re-structured again. It was  a rebuilding year, with the Cavs finishing with a 7-11-0 record, 21 points for  a 7th place finish.

2011 had a fresh outlook and a more aggressive recruiting campaign for players.  Kildonan started off the season well and went on a 13 game unbeaten streak that was ended in August.  Despite losing 3 of their last 5 games, Kildonan had to win their final game of the season to take the top spot. In a tough game, Kildonan edged out Grant Mill Rovers 2-1, and secured 41 points, 1 point over the 2nd and 3rd placed team.  Kildonan also unearthed Morgan Wyman, who went on to score a team season high of 21 goals. The Cavs did the double, by beating 2nd place Pescara in the playoff finals, 1-0 with 5 minutes left in the game.
